Doesn't matter... sometimes Hockey moms do know what they are doing. When the public pushes players and coaches to a higher standard this is not always a bad thing... parents need to be realistic but they do need to hold those accountable to some kid of reasonable standard.

In alphabetical order (order of opening in ()) 1 Burnsville (3) - TBA 2 Mankato East (1) - TBA 3 St. Louis Park (2) - TBA If this is right 3 of 126 jobs opened this year (2.4%). I don't count the co-op splits & "New Programs". I only count/post verified (MSHSL posting) positions... Past years: 2005 = 25 of 122 jobs opened this year (20.5%). 2004 = 21 of 122 jobs opened this year (17.2%). It is my understanding that Bob Driver is leaving Buffalo's program. He coached after the split so I think that position should be included in your list....although he may or may not have made it official as of this date.

The listings above are the only postings on the MSHSL site to date. But, some postings may get left on there from year-to-year too (like the Redwood Falls one)...

I'm not sure if this is the case, but there sometimes are few postings that never make it MSHSL page. Some bigger publics post the jobs only internally first, and if it is filled it never reaches a public post. GHS- are the Mankato and New Ulm posts from this year or were they never cleared from last year?

Mankato is from this year, I have no confirmation on NU but will contact and clairify. Good call on some jobs never making MSHSL site either! Maybe I should say that I would want confirmation before I post a job as open out of courtesy to that program/coach.

ghs or anyone else, I was wondering have you ever seen any stats on turnover in Boys Hockey coaches? I know we talk that 20-25% seems like a lot, but I would anticipate that is pretty normal for any PT job that requires the time commitment that coaching does. It would be interesting to see if there are stats for all coaching positions turnover by year. I wonder if the MSHSL tracks this at all.

JJ, I don't think it is. Just look at the boys' coaches in your conference (Missota), GHS' conference (Classic Sub), and mine (Lake). I think it would be fairly tough to come up with a recent year where more than 2 jobs turned over. On the boys' side especially in AA metro schools, most coaches are well-established. The Lake for example: Jefferson-Lindquist a few years ago...after Sats Kennedy-TK has been there a while Eagan-A few years back (can't remember his name)...after Johnson (I think) Burnsville-Now open, Barger was there for a while...left because he had to Rosemount-Macho this year, Micheletti a couple of years back Eastview-Gibbons a while Eden Prairie-Smith a while Lakeville North-Schmitz a while...might be on way out (always hear that) Lakeville South-NEW HIRE Apple Valley-Hayes a while Chaska-Snuggerud a while So using the lake and this scenario, I guess we'd probably see about 10% (although as you always hear a lot of these guys could be out this year). The thing to look at is how many boys' coaches leave because they want to and how many leave because they are asked to. I'd guess more boys' coaches leave because they are "asked" to. I think in the girls' game more coaches leave because they want to. They are younger and leave for their family, or they find "better" jobs and go there. I'd be interested in how many jobs (B & G) are filled by those who have recently (1-2 years away) been a head coach or left a head coaching job at another school to take the new one. Regarding these (and soon to be) open girls jobs...who's out there to fill these? Who's going to apply or who would we like to see apply? Are we just going to see the "shifting around" from job to job this year or are there serious, qualified, legitimate candidates that are not coaching or are assistants somewhere that would be good fits for them?

Boys coaches are more established as the game is more established and with that establishment (of the coaches) comes more stability in the coaches. Age is higher, established long term employment in a position that makes coaching possible is more typical, etc. I also believe that B Hockey paretns are more sports/hockey knowledgable typically than G Hockey parents, and so B Hockey parents may be less apt to complain about anything (that often doesn't justify complaint) as G Hockey paretns do. I think established coaches have thicker skin and are tougher to remove too. It's debatable as to what could be done to get more stability in the G Hockey coaching ranks, but it may not be doable for a while. It may take more females to come back and take these jobs on as "established" coaches down the road. Really, I think of most of the male G Hockey coaches as placeholders until this happens anyway. One thing I do believe in is tenure for coaches. I know it has a negative connotation, but it would help I think as it makes a mutual commitment by school to coach and fosters the same by coach to building a program for the long term through much effort that otherwise may not be put in due to the lack of guarantee of support whenever a parent complains that sally isn't playing enough...

My guess is that these will be filled through all of the above mentioned possibilities. Musical chairs for some jobs I'm sure and the sad shock wave this sends though the league. Others will be qualified assistants, or young kids just stepping out of playing ranks. Some may see old familiar names return, etc.

If there are indeed 3 teams in Rochester next year, then I would guess at least one coaching position would be listed? That would be a definite indication of how this situation shakes out.

I hear Mankato East is entertaining the idea of dropping their hockey program due to lack of participation. But they do have games scheduled for next season! Also the Fairmount coach said this was his last year. But he said that last year and they couldn't find a replacement so he came back for one more. Sounds like there will be a new Rochester Century team too.

I heard that Palmquist may be applying to Bemidji State College. Any truth in that? I also heard Ruth Ann is stepping down at Minnesota State Mankato after this season. Anyone in the "know" about those positions? Will any high school coaches be leaving to take college jobs and forcing the "domino" effect in opening high school positions?

I would think that the potential exists for a domino effect in one of a few ways re: HS coaches. It's also possible that we could see D3 coaches move to D1 Asst/Head, HS to D3, and HS vacancies as a result??? I've also heard some rumors about college coaches going the other direction - back to HS - and also many rumors about prominent HS coaches and current HS openings. It's "that time of year" for the rumors I guess!
