What to do
I am in Duluth for the weekend. Any suggestions on what to do or more importantly where to eat?

What type of food do you like? Steak, Italian, Pizza, Chinese?

As to what to do, it's a slow weekend here. We have the World of Wheels going on at the DECC, which is worth a look.
Quote:
Well I like most food except seafood

Same here. Not sure how small a small budget is but....

Mexican--Hacienda del Sol (319 E Superior St in Duluth)--atmosphere is lacking but the food quality certainly isn't. Small place so try to get there by 5:00

Italian--drive over to Superior and check out the Elbo Room (1309 Tower Avenue). This place is connected to Sammy's Pizza (we had that just last night) and has some great Italian dishes at a reasonable price.

Steak--the best in Duluth (Pickwick Restaurant) is also the most expensive; not for the small budget. The "chain restaurants" such as Timberlodge (Canal Park on Lake Avenue) and Applebees (Miller Hill Mall) are where we go for that although my wife likes the steaks at the Elbo Room also. Others can weigh in here. If I want steak, I usually will go to the Pickwick, pull out the plastic and then hope they forget to bill me

Chinese--Chinese Garden (231 E. Superior St) I'm not a big fan of Chinese food but every now and then we go there.

Pizza--If you've done Sammy's Pizza or Pizza Luce and want something local, it's a bit of a drive to south Superior, but go to the Shamrock Bar (5825 Tower Ave). Their sausage is the best in the Twin Ports, period.

Grandma's Saloon & Grill tends to draw a younger crowd; I think you'd like it. I'd compare it, atmosphere wise, to TGI Fridays and Chili's, but with much better food. Decent across the board menu which features burgers, steaks and pasta. We have three in Duluth, and we prefer the one at 46th Ave W and Grand (because it's quieter), but the younger set would probably prefer their main location in Canal Park (right by the Aerial Lift Bridge). Their Wild Cajun Chicken is my favorite dish anywhere.

I was going to recommend a good and unique breakfast joint but since Louis' Cafe in Superior closed, there's really nothing left other than Perkins (gaaaak) and Country Kitchen.

Off the top of my head, those are some choices.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Re: what to do
I'll second Lee's recommendation of the Hacienda del Sol. There's a hot dog place on Superior St. that's also very good.

The last time I was in Duluth (about a year ago) I ate at a cafe on a street about a block or two west (up the hill) of Superior St. in the downtown area. The food was good diner style food and it was cheap. I know that's a really vague description, but Lee do you have any idea what place this might be?

You have to stop at Blackwoods on London Rd.

Lots of hockey atmosphere.

Norman's Bar 1st st by Holiday Mall downtown...kind of a dive but part owned by Brett Hull...lots of UMD and Pro Pics. of Hull and friends

Coney Island
You had to mention Coney Island, didn't you? Now I'm hungry. Word of warning: Your arteries start clogging before you even place your order. I once gained three pounds of body fat just walking past the place. You can buy the sauce if you want to make your own Coneys at home, too.

If you want to splurge for a good hunk of meat, the prime rib at the Hammond in Superior can't be beat. I haven't had it better anyplace else around the Twin Ports.

Re: Coney Island
CBF, I didn't know about the prime rib at the Hammond. Thanks for the tip. The best prime rib I'd had was at Eddie's in Suptown but one thing they did with it which I didn't like was to put the meat directly into the au jus instead of having the au jus on the side.

Speaking of splurging, my wife is taking me to the Top Of The Harbor for my birthday. After dark, the atmosphere there is second to none with that incredible view. The last (and first) time we went there, I found the food to be surprisingly good in contrast to some very negative reviews others had given the restaurant.

Now I'm hungry too

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

I have had kind of spotty experiences at Top of the Harbor. You can't beat the view, of course. The food and service have been good at times and bad at times. Usually good, though. Great "date" restaurant. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Yeah, I've been at the Top of the Harbor a couple of times myself. It was a very cool experience.

Me and my best friend went on a date there about 2 months ago. It was amazing. I highly recommend it. Even if the food/service is bad, you'll get over it because of the view.

Much Love,
-Cloquet
