Canadians Hockey Players Rostered on USA Hockey Teams

At the last USA Hockey Meetings, it was brought up that Canadian Hockey (equal to USA Hockey) made a motion that they will no longer allow Canadian citizens to play on USA Hockey Rosters. Keep this in mind that it only impacts USA Rostered teams and would not effect college hockey. Teams that will feel the pinch would be any Junior programs throughout USA (i.e. USHL, NAHL, etc...) and will have a large impact on Shattuck and other AAA Midget teams. Here is a little more detail. The Canadian officials announced to the Olympic committee (IOC) that they were not going to allow any Canadian residents to participate on USA rostered teams unless they give up their citizenship in Canada and become a US citizen. So what happens to USA Hockey if they allow a Canadian citizen play on a USA Rostered team? The IOC could place sanctions on all USA hockey teams and not allow USA teams to participate in world events (i.e. the Olympics). If a Canadian player wants to challenge this, they would need to file a lawsuit and go through the Canadian legal system. I would assume that the Canada would no longer accept USA players to play on their teams. That is about all I know for now, but this could be a major issue in the months and years to come and I'll update if and when I hear more about this.

Is there any mention about European players on Canadian rosters? Is Canada being over zealous in the development of Canadian players? Seems changes are necessary every now and then, but how will this effect the junior programs in the US? Will it open more avenues for the US player to make rosters or will it delude the junior programs?

It seems to me that Hockey Canada doesn't want to lose its top talents to the US prep schools and Juniors programs. Isn't that why USA Hockey came up with the Tier 1 USHL? I've read somewhere that USA Hockey wanted to keep the top talent in the US and give them an alternative to Canadian Major Juniors.

I haven't read it fully, but I think this is the information you are asking about: A May 2005 press release regarding the <a href="http://www.hockeycanada.ca/e/news/2005/ ... ">Canadian Development Model</a> and the associated <a href="http://www.hockeycanada.ca/e/news/2005/ ...  from the Canadian Development Model Committee. The stated objective of that committee: To develop a Canadian hockey model players with a program that meets education needs within Canada.

I don't have a link that you can read to discuss this. All I can tell you is that it was brought up at the USA Hockey meeting that this is what Hockey Canada is looking to do. I'm sure we will see more about this in the future.
