NHL
I guess I must be desperate for hockey because I taped the Wild game last night and watched it after work.

Any thoughts on the new rule changes? I thought it looked more open and freewheeling, it was a lot more fun to watch.

The only changes that I don't like that much are the restrictions on goalies playing the puck.

Re: NHL
Why not let the goalie play the puck anywhere he wants, but then he is fair game.
I am sure that will keep him in the crease

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... wkfan70 at: 10/7/05 5:44 am

Re: NHL
From an offensive standpoint don't you want to get the goalie out of position? If he has more opportunity to play the puck, chances go up that he'll misplay the puck or otherwise end up out of position.

The other rules seem to do enough to open the game up (I do hope they keep calling obstruction as tight as they did last night), but the goalie rules for playing the puck seem too restrictive. One of the best high school games in the last few years, Breck v. SSP in the Class A semis two years ago, featured a goalie, Alex Stalock, who constantly played the puck and tried to spark rushes by passing the puck. He ended up out of position a number of times but made some spectacular stops to save himself. I am not that familiar with the NHL, but I'm sure there are NHL goalies who play that way (and probably drive their coaches crazy) and it seems a shame to restrict their talent.

Coast to Coast
Precisely.

Re: Coast to Coast
Your right on about the "Who's gonna win" senario, but its reather funny watching what the armored guy does when even the slightest contact is made. You would think that they were just run over by a Mack truck.

in the crease
I doubt that anyone would give up an opportunity to hit a goalie. I think that even a small hit would keep the goalie out of position long enough for many scoring chances. Eventually, they would stay at home in the crease.
Is it a penalty now if the goalie plays the puck out of the "trapezoid"?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but I thought it was a delay of game if they play it inside the trapezoid (the area in the corners) but it's OK to play it outside.

Hey packerboy, the Wild got a bunch of goals last night!

Re: Trapezoid
This explains the rule a little better, but does not clarify what type if any penatly is called

Goaltenders cannot handle the puck behind the goal line, except in a restricted area.
The Case: Goalies have too much control in their zone. They play the puck like defensemen, handing it off to teammates, shooting it out, making forward passes. They do so with immunity, protected by goaltender interference rules. Many say the goalie should be declared "fair game" - outside his crease, he should be open to bodychecking and puck battles. But NHL GMs will never increase the injury risk for their most important assets.
Impact: The idea is to encourage forechecking. If the goalie can't play a shoot-in, the attackers have a better chance to retrieve the puck. But this rule still allows goalies to play the puck in a zone directly behind the net. The restriction is a minor one and its effect on scoring will likely be negligible.
Down Side: Defensemen won't like it, as they count on the goalie to help them win races for the puck. This rule also encourages a dump-and-chase attack, not always the most exciting style of hockey.

Odd Stat
In Minnesota's 3-2 win over St. Louis, only 1 player on the Wild (Brent Burns) had a plus/minus rating above 0. St. Louis had 7, while 7 Wild players had -1 or worse, and 5 Blues players had -1 or worse. That just struck me as very odd.

Bouchard is really impressing me this year. He is making the new rules work to his advantage big time. Also, Rolston and White look like very good additions to the team.
-------------------

Who is the orca? Who is the octopus?
