Cordova was an AL rookie of the year though so he did have further to fall. But I doubt that Morneau will wind up on the DL because of a tanning bed injury either....

I think the pitchers get a little tired of being the scapegoats in Gardy's press conferences. He doesn't mind saying how they struggle or didn't have it today, but he really defends his hitters. I can think of only 2 position players he has gotten on this year; Rivas and Ford. Last night on Barrieo's show on KFAN even Al Newman had the nerve to say the Twins wouldn't have anywhere near the number of wins they have if it wasn't for these guys making plays behind the pitchers. Basically that the pitchers should shut up. Is it just me or is this the worst defense the Twins have put out in the field in many years?

I realize that everybody needs to be pushed along in different ways, but Gardy doesn't get on his hitters enough. Morneau is starting to remind of Chris Hovan, to emotionally frial to be criticsized.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... oldy313 at: 9/9/05 1:28 pm

As I understand it, once the season is over, they dont have that many trade options.

They have to go into the free agent market unless they want to give up young pitching. But with Mays and his 7 million dollars gone, that might not as unthinkable as it has been in the past.

If they want to contend, they have to make some major moves. Cleveland and Chicago will be impossible to compete with unless they get some offense.

Even if the record was the same as 2004 at this time, they'd just be in a battle for the Wild card and behind in the division.

90-92 wins isnt going to get us in the playoffs anymore.

They need outfilders who can hit with power and infieldrs who can get on base.

Jones is like a lot of other guys on the team. Good support player but not a solid RBI guy in the middle of the order. You can have an outfield like the Twins if your 3rd basemen and 1st basemen hit 25 HRs and knock in 100. But thats not going to happen.

They need to find a couple of hitters.

Go Yankees.

Interesting comments by Radke in the paper intimating that he may retire.

If he is gone and Mays is gone, who do you trade to get hitting?

No way to improve unless they are willing to part with Liriano or Baker or some combination of one of those and a Rincon or Romero.

It seems the only option is to go into the free agency market. They should have a lot of money available because they wont be paying the young pitchers much.

Lets go TR.

Liriano looked pretty good today in his first start. 5 innings, 2 earned runs, 6 strikeouts. 69 pitches isn't bad either. This wasn't the best Tiger lineup, but they really the only ball hit hard once and it went out.

I don't know what to make of Radke's comment, kind of strange though I'll have to admit.

There is an article in the Strib that claims the Twins are thinking about trading Hunter.

Why would they do that?

What would they get for him? Younger and cheaper utility players?

The last thing they need to do is trade what little offensive power they have. He averages 25 HRs and 100 or so RBIs doesnt he? I cant imagine how they could improve the team by trading Hunter.

Trading Hunter. Well I'll tell you it wouldn't be the best of moves. The guy hits for decent power and good RBI numbers and is probably the best outfielder in the game. I don't know why they would trade him, but if that ever happened, then the Twins would need to get something good out of the deal.

One team I thought of was the Yankees. I haven't heard anything about them wanting him, but look at their CF spot. Bernie Williams could be putting the bats away after this year and I'm sure the Yankees would love a guy with Hunter's skill.

I think it was Jim Souhan who had a good article a few weeks ago as to why he thought it would be a bad idea for the Twins to move Hunter. Basically he felt Hunter was the competitive soul of the Twins and they'd lose more than decent offensive production and Gold Glove caliber fielding if they moved him. He could be more disciplined at the plate, but I'd have to agree with Hillfan and packerboy, it makes no sense to move him.

I haven't been following baseball that closely lately, but it looks like EvilEmpire and Packerboy's Yankees have arisen with a vengeance after sleepwalking through most of the season. Where the heck did Aaron Small come from? I see the Yankees are one game ahead of the Bosox and the two teams play a series this weekend in Boston. The teams could end up tied which I assume would lead to a one game playoff if neither team qualifies for the wildcard. The Red Sox pitching is in such shambles right now, with a knuckleballer as their ace that I don't see them getting two wins to force the playoff.

Cleveland has a series this weekend against Chicago and if they sweep they'd be tied with the White Sox and I'm not sure if that would force a playoff too. It could be a wild weekend for baseball, though the NL seems pretty settled, the Astros magic number for the wildcard is down to 2.

Here's the deal: Yankees are up by 1 game over Boston in the East and Boston & Cleveland are tied for the WC. NY & Bos play 3 games and Chi & Cle play 3 games to finish out the year.

If the Yankees win 2 games, they win the East. If they win 1 game, they tie Boston and have a 1 game playoff at Yankee Stadium to determine the winner of the East. If they get swept and Cleveland wins 3, they go to Jacobs field for 1 game playoff to determine WC.

If Cleveland gets swept, the only way they still have a chance is if Boston gets swept, then they get a 1 game playoff at Jacobs field to determine WC.

For Boston, it all depends on what Cleveland does as to what they need to do to get into the playoffs. They need to win more than Cleveland does to get in or at least as many to tie and force a playoff. If they sweep NY, they are in because they win the East.

If the Yankees only win 1 game and Cleveland wins 2 that would mean there is a 3-way tie for 2 playoff spots. NY & Bos would have a 1 game playoff at Yankee Stadium to determine the East winner. Loser of that game would play at Jacobs field the next day to determine WC winner. Sites for games were determined earlier in the season by a coin-flip.

I hope I got every situation and it is understandable, let me know if it isn't.

And btw, Go Yankees!
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... kesBack at: 9/30/05 10:19 am

One more scenario; if Cleveland sweeps Chicago this weekend, both teams are in. Chicago gets the division (11-8 advantage in h2h over Cleve.) and Cleveland is the wild card.

Now....Smoltzy needs to get healed up quick or my Braves are going to do the JBSU "One And Out" again.

Is anybody taking San Diego seriously, considering that every team in the NL East has an equal or better record than them?

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

EvilEmpire, thanks for spinning my brain around a couple of times there, I think that might be worse than the last weekend of the NFL though with the NFL you can have a tie.

I'd love to see the Yankees completely knocked out of it, but the odds of monkees flying out of my butt are better than not having to suffer through the Yankees in the playoffs.

And noone is taking San Diego seriously, though noone took Duluth East seriously against White Bear last spring and look what happened.

Thanks Lee.

I think some people are underestimating SD. Yes, they have a crappy record, but I could see them stealing a 5 game series very easily. Peavy can win 2 games for them and they just have to get lucky on one other one. I don't think they will make much noise, but I don't count them out right away either. It will be interesting to see what the Braves' young guns can do in the playoffs. I'm predicting a Houston vs. New York World Series. This year it took 95 wins to make the playoffs.

I dont see that changing.

In 2004 the Twins won 92 and won the division. This year that would have given them 3rd.

They had an off year offensively but even if they would have had good years from some guys and Hunter stays healthy, I dont know if they win 95.

With the offense they had, its amazing they won 83.

What do you do to get a couple of professional hitters in the lineup?

Let's hope Castillo makes us forget the summer of Bret Boone <shudder>. I'll be happy if Ryan can come up with two out of the three, a 3rd baseman and outfielder or DH. It'd be nice if they could get Hank Blalock from Texas or Aubrey Huff from Tampa.

Frank Thomas is in the running for the DH. He would definitely be an upgrade but he's been hurt a lot and pouted his way through the last few seasons in Chicago. It sounds like he'll be motivated to show up Chicago though because he wants to sign with an AL team so he gets the chance to play against the White Sox regularly.

J.C. Romero is now an Anahiem Angel.

In return they receive minor league infielder Alexi Casilla.

"...like many previous trades the Twins have accomplished in recent history, gives the Twins a strong prospect for the future. Casilla, 21, spent almost all of 2005 with Class A Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League. In 78 games, Casilla batted .325 with 62 runs scored and 47 stolen bases. He finished fourth in the Midwest League for stolen bases.

Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Angels in 2003, Casilla began last season with the Angels' Double-A affiliate in Arkansas before being moved up to Triple-A Salt Lake after seven games. He played in only 13 games for Salt Lake when he finally was transferred to Cedar Rapids. Over 189 games in the Minors, Casilla holds a career batting average of .297 and a .375 on-base percentage. Though Casilla is still a ways off from joining the Twins, Ryan feels that he will mature into a Major League infielder.

"He's a middle infielder that can run, he can throw, has quick hands and can swing that bat on the ball," Ryan said. "We believe that he is a player who has a very high ceiling and one that will at some point surface at the Major League level."
