I know they had a number of different scenarios, but what is the plan that their voting on? I really liked the sound of a Heritage Center.

Quote:
I really liked the sound of a Heritage Center.

Two different issues, dasherdude. The Heritage Center is a plan to replace the burned Peterson Arena. Last I heard of that deal was they were looking at the old Clyde Iron Works building near 30th Ave W and Michigan St. The vote last night was to build a new Arena for the Bulldogs (and which could also attract larger conventions/concerts), which will be built on part of the current DECC parking lot alongside 5th Ave W.

Personally, I was in favor of liquidating the Great Lakes Aquarium, having a fish fry, demolishing that eyesore and building the new DECC there.

The old DECC will remain, by the way, and will still host high school hockey games as the "home ice" for East, Central and Denfeld. More sheets of ice=A Good Thing.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005
Egomaniac since 2006

Re: New Duluth Arena tax vote
aaahhh, two separate things.
So instead of waiting for the State of MN build a new rink that's "equal to" what the Gophers have in Mariucci, the City of Duluth is taking the inititive to build a new rink for the Bulldogs?

not exactly
the state is pitchin in about half (hopefully)
this is not a done deal yet

Duluth is overdue for a new arena...
It would be nice to see Duluth get a new arena! I have two requests for the designers: International Size Ice Sheet and about 6,000 or more seats! I spoke with Scott Sandelin and Skeeter Moore about a year ago and they said they did not feel that the larger ice sheet was a consideration but it would be at least the 200 x 85 size sheet of ice. Can anyone confirm rink dimensions? Seating capicity?

current plans
the current plans have a 85 x 200 sheet and seating for over 6600 fans with a possiblity of up to 7000

Re: current plans
I think the NCAA "prefers" new buildings go to 100 x 200 sheet. I don't think it's a requirement, just a preference.

Re: current plans
I like the seating capacity! I do much rather prefer the International size ice sheet over the NHL ice sheet... I think it is a much better game on the larger ice sheet!

Rink Size
USA Hockey 'Recommends' the International sized sheet of ice. I think it is interesting that Minnesota, Wisconsin, St. Cloud and CC all built International sized ice sheets but the newest arenas at North Dakota and Denver built NHL sized ice sheets... Duluth does not yet have a larger ice sheet... They need one!
