Thoughts on the Vikings trading Culpepper to Miami
I personally liked Daunte, however, the recent events between himself and the organization showed that their seemed to be no way out other than trading or releasing him. Getting a second round pick for a player with an injury as severe as Daunte's was pretty good in my opinion. At least they got something, whereas they would have gotten nothing if they would have released him. Where I am concerned is that we now have a very average quarterback leading the Vikes and I am very wary of that. Johnson doesn't have much time left and I think they should have taken a shot at Drew Brees or I hope they use a pick on a QB in the draft if one is still available. Sure Johnson played well down the stretch last year, but I don't think it is fair to expect that out of him again. What do all of you think?

hawkfan... He was traded and assuming he passes a physical.. he will be a dolphin. I guess I never really really liked Daunte.. he was just really fun to play with on Madden cause he had a cannon for an arm and he could run fast... there have been so many times when ive wanted to throw a brick through my tv for all the dumb !@#$ that he does while playing....I just dont really think the vikings are being very smart in having Johnson be the starter.... I think hes old enough to be my dad....

Re: not so bad
I'm left wondering what the plan is for the future. I realize Johnson is a great guy and a nice player, but he can't have too many years left in that body. For his sake, I hope the Vikings make some upgrades to that "O" line. All in all I like the move.

could agree more
get some blocking for the old man and a consistant running game and the queens just might make the post season

sure would be nice

My Thoughts
Glad to get rid of him and get something for him. Personally I was sick of all the crap he was doing this offseason. I thought the Vikes gave him every break possible, but he always wanted more. Good riddance!

Johnson will do just fine as our QB this season. There has been talk that Cutler has the possibility of falling to us in the draft because of the FA signings that have happened. That would be great, but if not there are QB's in the 2nd-3rd round range that I think will develop into good NFL QB's. Charlie Whitehurst, Brad Gradkowski, Brodie Croyle... guys like that. If not, there's always options next year or even the June 1st releases this year (maybe McNair or someone like that). There is the option of signing Kerry Collins too. As long as we draft either Cutler or DeAngelo Williams first this year, we will be fine. Hopefully the extra 2nd round pick we got will get us a good S or LB. I'm not thinking Super Bowl this year, but playoffs definitely. Glad I don't have to hear about Daunte anymore and we can start getting ready for next year knowing that he isn't on the team anymore.

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Re: Uh....regarding D C..................by SS
Culpepper had some nice seasons and brought some excitment back to the program. He showed promise and there was hope. Unfortunately, there were some things that slowed the Vikings in recent years (The big three) and they are all now gone... Moss, Tice and Culpepper. They did fine without Moss. We can only hope that the new guy is better than Tice, time will tell and Johnson brought some much needed stability to the offense and leasership back to the team. Johnson may last two or three more years... Time to groom a new more productive backup. Maybe they can draft a QB such as Leinert?!

As for Culpepper... He was entertaining! His interceptions and fumbles... Good for a laugh!

The trade was good, Culpepper for a number two draft pick... It is up to the Vikings to draft well and pick up another free agent or two...

Re: Uh....regarding D C..................by SS
we won't draft a running back we just signed chester taylor, not a bad back plus mewelde and ciatrick fason is getting better, if Culter falls we take him otherwise there are 2 great safeties that could still be available Darnell Bing from USC and Michael Huff from Texas

Bye Bye DC...
Bye, you won't be missed. Thanks for the 2nd Rd. Draft pick!

The Puck – aka: The self-proclaimed People’s Champion

Re: Bye Bye DC...
qwerty-
I agree with you. If Cutler is available, we take him. However, with the Cardinals signing Edge, I think they might look to a QB. The Titans, Jets, Raiders, and the Cardinals all have a possiblity of taking a QB. Do I hope they do? No. I would love to see Cutler fall to the Vikes, but I just don't see that happening. Michael Huff is sick... almost an Ed Reed clone in my mind. Not overally big, but is fast as hell for a safety. Darnell Bing is a KO safety. He would immediately make his presence felt on the field. Another possibility for the Vikings is Ernie Sims... last year he was proclaimed the hardest hitter in all of college football. At a little under 6 feet tall, some say he may be too small for a linebacker, which may be true, but he also runs a 4.5 and is a freak athlete. I could see him converting to SS....not Slapshooter....but Strong Safety. I think it will be interesting to see what they will do. Maybe they go for a guy like Jimmy Williams who can play S or CB. Either way, the Vikings have a lot of options and I hope they don't mess it up. Any ideas on who else they might pick in that spot or in the first 2 rounds?

AP Story... Vikings want to trade up...
Guys, I read last night that Vikings coach Brad Childress intends to trade up in order to get in position to draft a top notch quarterback... There are several good prospects in the draft but if he is talking about trading up then he is talking about going after Vince Young or Matt Leinart. Does he trade up before the draft or does he wait until VY or ML is drafted and cut a deal? Either way, what can the Vikings offer as compensation? Also, who is a better fit with the Vikings, Young or Leinert?

DC now gone is a very good thing! It will be interesting to see how things unfold for the Vikings in the next few months!

Re: AP Story... Vikings want to trade up...
Thunderstorm-

I don't think the Vikings will be able to trade up that high to get either Leinart or Young. I like Leinart better and I think he would fit into the system better than Young, however Young's athleticism is unreal and wows me every time I watch him play. If they trade up, I think that they will trade up high enough to get Cutler. In my opinion, I like Cutler the best. He has that gunslingers mentality, almost like a Brett Favre and is pretty mobile and very big. I would love to see the Vikes move up and draft Cutler because I think he will be a very good pro someday.

Cutler
His name is Jay Cutler and he is from Vanderblit.

This is an excerpt from nfldraftcountdown.com

Rumors have had the Jets being interested in both moving up and down in round one but in the end they just love this guy too much to pass. No prospect has seen his stock rise like Jay Cutler has since the end of the season and the sky is the limit in terms of how high he could go. From the media to the scouts it would seem as though everyone has fallen in love with Cutler and he is the darling of this year's NFL Draft. Cutler didn't get a lot of national attention playing for perennial loser Vandy and never even played in a bowl game but he did a great job behind a poor offensive line. In addition to having all the physical tools you look for in a top quarterback Cutler also has tremendous intangibles and a gunslinger mentality, which his teammates rally around.

Height: 6-3 1/4 | Weight: 226 | 40-Time: 4.77

Official Bio

Strengths:
Has a very strong arm...Good size...Pretty good athlete who can move a little...Sports a quick delivery with good accuracy...Patient player who will go through his progressions...Tough guy who will hang in the pocket and take a hit...Throws well on the move...Strong and durable with a lot of experience...A leader with top intangibles and is a gamer who comes up big in the clutch.

Weaknesses:
Mechanics get pretty dodgy at times...Footwork is very eratic...Will take unnecessary risks and make some bad decisions...Gunslinging mentality can morph into recklessness...Has too much confidence in his arm at times...Struggles throwing the deep ball...Has not had a lot of success at the college level from a team perspective...Body has taken a lot of punishment throughout his career.

Notes:
Never received a lot of national attention but was named preseason All-SEC...Has the physical tools and makeup to succeed at the next level...With the lack of top signal callers available don't be surprised if Cutler goes off the board early.

... I just like that kind of an attitude in a QB, I think he is going to be a stud.
