You are so correct Slappathiah. Blake beat Hill in the Championship 4-2. Hill was 26-1-1 that year with their only loss being to Blake, when Ric Schafer was their star. In those days, "recruiting" wasn't necessary -- and open enrollment wasn't even a twinkle in a legislator's eye. All the guys who played for the Catholic Schools were all from different little parishes, just like the Cretin guys were, or the St. Agnes or the Crookston Cathedral guys. Hill had Matt and Pat Conroy, Tim Whisler, Rick and Mike Belde, Joe Nelson, Fred Simon -- a lot of guys who went on to play Division I college. Crookston Cathedral had Bill and Dick Gramer, Gary Royal, Paul Fontaine, Pat Sullivan, Johnny Noah, Kim Menard, Ignatious Zakzerewski -- a lot of guys who went on to play Division I, professional baseball, rock 'n roll music and Olympic glory. It was a foregone conclusion that the kids who went to the Catholic grade schools would be going to Catholic high schools. In Duluth, for example .. you couldn't hop from one district to another. If you were Catholic and part of Packerboy's crusades ... you would be going to the Catholic High Schools. Duluth Cathedral was a Catholic school. Kids went there because of their family's religious background. They knew they couldn't play in the public school tournament, but they went to Cathedral anyways for other reasons. I have THE Champions for the last 61 years printed in front of me and I can't for the life of me find any more than five private Champions.
