NFL Draft
It's still nearly two weeks away, but with all the coverage on it I feel like it has already happened. Most prognostications have the Vikings taking Ernie Sims, although there is some speculation they may try to trade up to nab Vince Young. They still have quite a few needs, notably Linebacker, Quarterback, Cornerback, and arguably Running Back. 5 picks on the first day, so they should be able to fill some voids. Reggie Bush is the consensus # 1, and it seems a certainty that Leinart will head to Tennessee. The draft has become an event in itself, and I for one get suckered into the hype. Anyone else have thoughts on what direction the Vikes, or your favorite team, may go?

HAWK
The Packers need to take AJ Hawk with the 5th overall pick. They need a WR in round 2.
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Re: HAWK
I agree with you boblee on Hawk. However I might be thinking about taking a RB with the 2nd pick. They diefinately need alot more help then just two positions. I think either way they need to take Hawk 1st round and then either WR or RB.
"my wife tells me I am pathetic with how much high school hockey I go to."

If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
I would take Sims at 18 UNLESS Cutler was available there. I would not trade up to get him because he isn't worth trading up for. In the second, with Sims, I would target getting an OG and a CB/S type. My ideal players there would be OG Davin Joseph and Ashton Youboty (if he falls). In the third, if he is there with our first 3rd round pick, draft QB Omar Jacobs. If he is gone, I would not draft a QB. I would wait until next year to draft one, because Croyle and Whitehurst are not the answer. The rest of the way its best player available.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
Interesting tidbit about Schaub potentially being dealt to the Vikes on draft day. Although he has seen limited action, I am very high on Matt Schaub, and although we need LB help badly a QB is vital.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
I agree. It would be a lot easier to find a good LB in the later rounds than a QB. While Schaub is only semi-proven, he is a good athlete and impressed me a lot last year.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
If either Sims or Cutler are not available at #17, then I would do the trade. The Vikes will do the trade if that scenario happened.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
It would be hard to pass on Sims were he available, he is the ideal fit for the new Cover 2 Scheme, and linebacker has been a major area of need the last couple years. Greenway would also be tough to pass up. I think Childress has his eyes on adding Schaub with the expectation that he become our starter, and he won't hesitate to make a big move: See Culpepper for a 2nd rounder.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
Does anyone know if the Vikings decided to get some LB or CB help this year are there any good QBs who will be in the 2007 draft?

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
They signed Ben Leber in hopes that he would improve the linebacking corps. They are still looking for corners as they lack depth after Smoot and Winfield with the departure of Brian Williams. In the '07 draft Brady Quinn will be the top prospect followed by Drew Stanton and Troy Smith. Quinn will go high but the others might be more in the Vikings range.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
Forget Quinn, Stanton, and Smith. The QB I want next year is Brian Brohm out of Louisville. He will be the best QB next year in college, and will be the best out of that draft class.

Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
Brohm should be solid, Quinn isn't good at all, but none of those QBs strike me as superstars

I also made my perfect draft for the Vikings. Its realistic yet gets a lot of quality at need positions:

1. Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt
2a. Roger McIntosh, LB, Miami
2b. Davin Joseph, G, Oklahoma
3a. Greg Eslinger, C, Minnesota
3b. Devin Hester, CB, Miami
4. Greg Jennings, WR, West. Michigan
5. A.J. Nicholson, LB, Florida St.
6. Re: If I were the Vikings GM on draft day...
That covers a lot of needs, although I don't know if Jennings is going to fall to the 4th, though I hope he does. Joseph would complete the O-Line, and Hester has a lot of potential although he did not play well last year. Eslinger would bring depth and be the heir to Matt Birk's position. I still think the pick goes towards either Sims or Greenway or gets traded for Matt Schaub.

Eslinger
I think he can be a very good center. He is undervalued right now because he had some poor scores in tests that really don't tell that much about a player to begin with. He dominated the O-Line for the Gophers for 4 years against some pretty good D-lineman. I think he will be a starter for somebody for about a decade.

Texans
The Texans confess to either picking Reggie Bush or Mario Williams with the first pick...
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Re: Mock Draft
Most of both of your drafts are pretty good, but there are some trouble spots in them both.

boblee- Cutler will not go #4. It is my belief that teams are overhyping him so some team trades up (like the Vikings) and takes him.

The other main problem I see is at the end of the first with your back to back to back picks of Youboty, Eslinger and Howard. Youboty and Howard have a slight chance at getting drafted in the first, but no way Eslinger does.

Blue Breeze- I only have one problem with your draft, and that is Mario falling to 6. If I was Casserly (Texans GM), I would take him over Bush at #1 because DE is so much more of a need than RB. Those who say Bush gets more value because he is a return man? They have Jerome Mathis, who was a Pro Bowl return man last year as a rookie. Otherwise pretty good.
