However i dont have a child in hockey. . . yet. . . so i contribute appox squat to MN hockey. Just the couple grand in gas, lodging, spare equipment, amongst other things i spend with out reimbursement out of the goodness of my heart because i love to do this. Seriously though, first its the helmet, then its mouthgaurds, then its god knows what....

Our head coach took a spill this year during a 1 on 1 drill while he was giving a coaching tip to a player off to the side. He cracked a couple ribs and dislocated his thumb. It was a pretty nasty stumble for a 60 yr old man whos spent more time in arenas than half this board combined. He has recovered for the most part (still cant hold a stick), but even knowing the possibilities for injury has not invested in a helmet. We know the risks involved and its our decision. Leave it that way.

Re: Coaches required to wear helmets.
Like I said before there is no way they can enforce this rule..What are they going to have MH officials circling the state to make sure I have it on.. And if I don't wear it what are they going to fine me this is such a joke. A basketball coach can fall just as easy as I can I don't ever see them having to wear a helmet. I agree MH has bigger fish to fry.

Re: Coaches required to wear helmets.
Hal T. does not have a vote.

27 votes I believe, 12 are District Directors. If memory serves me right, all 12 DD werre against this the last time it was brought up. But 12 of 27... do the math.

But you can express your opinion through a poll being conducted on the www.minnesotahockey.org web page.

You can continue to post here, as I will print and copy these comments (pro and con as long as they are to the point, as all have been) for the Board meeting.

You can call any or all the Baord members (including me) via our phone/email etc under Board at the above webpage.

Re: Coaches required to wear helmets.
Oh, and there are several ways to enforce it. All would be rather ugly and more work for me and the other 11 guys like me. So do not rely on that as an out.

Helmet
Elliot- I don't see how they can have you traveling around the north looking for coaches wearing helmets for a practice that starts at 9:00pm in roseau. I know that they may want you to do it but is it really realistic? I say no. I have coached for 14 years and I think that any if MH wants to do this it is a big waste of your time and MH(OUR) money.

When ever anything big comes on the horizon on braodcast it to all local associations within District 16 and ask for feedback.

With their input and my judegement I make a decision on how to argue (pro or con) at the meetings. I also listen to the discussion at the meetings before I vote.

I do not know if others take all into consideration or just vote with their predeteremined mind set.

Spot checks by the DD and his/her designees may very well be part of it. Denial of insurance claim coud be another method.

Probably loss of roster or playoff would be the penalty imposed on any finding.

And I am sure I would get multiple complaints regarding any situation where a helmet was not in use. A Warroad guy showing up in a Roseau rink, etc.

And the Twin Cities would be even worse for team vs team complaints, bu teasier for spot checking by MH officials.

Like I said all would be a nightmare for the outste DDs.

Re: mn wild
After reffing games for 16 years (squirts-High School) USA Hockey decided I needed a helmet so I quit.

After head coaching at all youth levels for about the same amount of time USA Hockey came up with the stupid CEP, so I quit. It shouldn't matter to anyone beyond my local board if I am a capable coach or not, not be up to some Yo-yo at USA Hockey who looks at a list and says "yep, Brian went to the class he's a good coach"

Now I just help out teams, if USA Hockey decides I have to wear a helmet I'll quit that too. I am an adult, I can make my own decisions for my own safety.

Hockey and the PC dictators that run it have way to much time on their hands if they worry about what happens to my PeeWee C team at practice. What happened to local control? I swear, USA Hockey has to be so far into everybody's personal business nowadays, no other youth sport even come close to this much BS.

what
If I am a coach, do I have to wear a helmet on the rink in my backyard if I am helping my son (or daughter) with their stickhandling?

This is just a craxy idea not matter how well intentioned it is

Re: helmets
Mandatory helmets is BS! Make it optional, make it a recomendation but DONOT make them wear them. We live in a society were we are more concerned about the protection of everything except our borders to the south. This thread has listed every possible reason why and why we shoudnt wear a helmet. Lets take that energy and voice our opinions to the Mn hockey board, answer the survey posted on the mnhockey website. Contact your district director, if the majority dont want it and its passed then there are other ways we can battle the few that make wrong decisions for youth hockey. I'm sorry Wes died but he could have wore a helmet on his own, we dont need mandates to make decisions for ourselves. I know a few coaches who still wear shin pads and a cup to protect themselves at practices. Is that next? Full gear for coaches.

Re: helmets
I totally disagree with this being mandatory, but if you think
this is a good enough reason to quit coaching, then you
should'nt be coaching anyway. you expect your players to
play through tough situations but you are going to tuck your
tail and run!
I have been coaching many years in multiple sports, I do it
for love of the game, and I disagree with alot of crap that
goes with the teritory; but the rewards of seeing kids develop
far outwieghs the negative.
I will voice my oppinion against this but in the end it won't
stop me from doing what I love to do; COACHING!!!

Re: helmets
Any more comments?

Re: helmets
Elliot - thank you for taking the time for this topic. I think the resluts of the poll on the MNHOCKEY web site speak for what coaches think should happen:

Should coaches be required to wear helmets on the ice?
From 12/1/2005 to 12/22/2005 Number of votes: 208 votes
Description:
Yes 17%
36 votes
No 83%
172

Unfortunately, individuals on boards, much like politicians have there own agenda and do/ vote the way they want versus what the members want.

Once again, thanks for your time.

- Troll

Re: no
Next thing is the kids will have to dress at home and show up in full gear so no one gets hurt in the locker room

maybe we could also make the sticks and pucks a little softer so they don't leave bruises

have em sign a waiver and lets play hockey

exactly
get some new pucks made out of cushion and sticks made out of plastic and put the kids and coaches in a bubble so no one gets hurt. This is a joke or something.

helmets
It is kinda funny that they have to wear helmets...But did anyone hear about the dad up in Duluth who went braindead from a hockey puck? He was playing a father-son game and was even wearing a helmet, when somebody accidentally hit him in the head with a puck. It wasn't even a hard shot, but caught him in a wrong place and now he is severely injured and has practically lost his life.

Re: helmets
Time should be spent on the redisticting we have been hearing about for a while now.

Finish that first!

Re: helmets
Redistricting...... belongs in a different thread, but my opinion is to leave the districts alone. They are working as they are, leave them alone.

Re: helmets
The guy in Duluth was (Dennin Bauers was his name) did die from his injuries. It is a tragic story and very sad for his family and the hockey community in Duluth.

However, Mr. Bauers was wearing a helmet and such a terrible thing still happened. With that being said I think the decision should continue to be left up to the individuals coaches. It is their right to decide how much protection they need to feel safe. If they have to sign a waiver to do it than fine, but don't force them into anything.

Re: helmets
STUPID RULE, You will see alot of good coaches quitting next year. Parents will be the only ones who will with all these rules being set.

Re: helmets
I talked to our district director today and the word from the meeting this past weekend is that beginning next season, coaches in Minnesota will be required to wear a helmet whenever they are on the ice for practice or a scrimmage.

I myself have been taken down from behind and wished I would have been wearing a helmet. Safety has always been the main reason behind new rules and I believe that Minnesota Hockey is thinking in the best interest of the safety of the coaches in their state.

Thanks.
