Minnesota hockey bans chewing gum!!!

Post by Duluthhockeyfan »

Minnesota hockey has decided to ban coaches from chewing gum at practice or during games.

Seems a coach in Minnesota while yelling instructions across the ice during practice swallowed his gum and choked. Fortunately, the coach was revived by one of his asst.'s. The issue has forced the Minnesota Hockey Board of Directors to Ban the use of all chewing gum, mints, and any other substance or material that is used in the mouth during any hockey function, practice or game. This is for the coaches own good and is expected to set a positive example for the kids on the rink. The rule will take effect at the start of the '06 season. The rule was championed by Minnesota Hockey's Coach in Chief, Hal "can you see my ego" Tearse.

God forbid one of the kids see's their coach choking!

Not to keep talking about this issue but I found this under a District 3 Associations Minutes,

"Starting in 2006 - 2007 Minnesot hockey is making it mandatory that "All Coaches must wear a HECC approved hockey helmet for all"on-ice" activities. It is being considered to access a 30 day suspension to those coaches that do not comply."

I know the rule has been approved, but could some one confirm that this suspension was discussed.

That would possibly be a district rule so far.It will probably be discussed at the spring meeting.

Guys, this is a USA Hockey rule... Not just a MAHA rule. It will be part of the coaching registration process. If someone wants to coach, they will have to abide by the rules laid down by USA Hockey. I think it is a little bizaar that we now have to attend coaching seminars but I do it as I want to coach and my association will not allow anyone on the ice that is not USA Hockey certified. Think of the tobacco rule... I am sure there were some grumblings about it but tobacco products are out and have been now for many years. Get the lid, put it on your head, every one will be doing it...

So are coaches egos really that big that putting a lid on will keep them from teaching the game? Last as the kids who where on the ice 2 years ago what they think after watching there coach on the ice. Or the Mites this year that watched their coach get air lifted from a rink.

This has more to do with the isurance the USA hockey provides to cover your butt. Go to play-it-again. you can pick up a helmet for a few bucks. Most coaches have them because the play pick up games or adult leagues anyway.

Live with it cause it's not going to change!

(PS. I don't like it either but you have to do it! I also think that it is time to get some of the "old" coaches out and get back to creating hockey players!)

The insurance??? LOL. Do know anything about USA hockey's insurance? It is a joke. It is just something that sits there and looks good. Read into what it actually covers and you will see the same.

This is not insurance driven, I believe it was stated earlier in the thread. The helmet thing is driven by 1 individual that convinced many others "on emotion" rather than actual facts that this is a good idea.

HOCKEY NUt is right about the insurance. I am aware of 4 claims in the last year that USA Hockey Insurance carrier has flat out stated they will not pay.

Insurance?

Post by Duluthhockeyfan »

I can tell you from expierence, USA hockey does not cover anything. It is simply there to look good. I caught a puck in the eye during a practice (and no I'm not for wearing a helmet.) and USA hockey would not cover it. To sa ythat this is an insurance issue is bunk, it is Hal Tearse trying to look PC as always.

It seems I hear more and more of coaches falling on the ice, getting concussions and some dying. Why is wearing a helmet such a big deal? Would you think of playing hockey without a helmet? There are plenty of times things happen on the ice during practice - at all levels - a kid slides into a coach from behind knocking him/her over as an example. It only takes one small incident to change the rest of your life and your family. I understand many don't want it mandatory, but it really isn't that big of a deal to just wear a helmet. Many coaches in our association are voluntarily wearing them now - NO BIG DEAL!

Lets take skates off too because they can cut major arteries, or lead to permanent tendon and nerve damage. Get rid of coaches who can't skate but have a stupid card and get back to getting coaches who can coach. Society is moving away from this crap, why does hockey insist on going backwards. Proficiency is the key, not certification.

As for gettting rid of old coaches how about getting rid of bad ones regardless of age? Hockey is falling apart, the level of play is going down hill rapidly. Less kids are playing, the ones that are aren't the top athletes anymore ( just the well off ones), money is too big a factor, elitism is rampant, among a meriad of other problems and MAHA spends it's time on a stupid helmet issue.

Goldy313,
First let me thank you for the fact that someone has the guts to say it like it is. Hockey is a fast game and I have coached it now for 34 years. Not long ago there use to be teams with 4 or 5 or 6 players that were very good hockey players, now you are lucky to see 1 or 2 on each team. Minnesota hockey does have some strange ideas and all we ever hear is get involved and do something. As far as old coaches if a coach is not doing his job people need to go to there association boards and again have the guts to get him FIRED!!!!!!. If not shut-up and sit down.
NO HELMETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elliott, Good luck.

There is a group of individuals that are attending the spring meeting and present the petition that 1,397 youth coaches signed (there are some doubles and people that are deceased) but I do not see that they have bene added to the agenda, per the website.

To the coaches that but the petition together, thank you for your efforts.

BAD NEWS: USA HOckey is making a ruling about making helmets mandatory at their spring meeting.

It should all be the coaches choice if he wants to get hit in the head then let him.
