I went to public school, so will my kids, and you won't hear any of us whining about how we don't want to play against the private schools. Grow a pair, missy.

If you take the private schools out to have a seperate tournement then BOTH trophies are tarnished. The champoinship should mean you are THE BEST OF ALL. I don't even like the 2 class system because sometimes the A champ looks pretty good and it makes some folks wonder....what if?

Go back to a one class tourney and I can guarantee you that there will be less top flight private school teams. It will limit their chances of getting to the dance. We would go back to having couple of very good privates and most kids would stay home.

This has got to be the best response I have ever seen on the public vs. private debate. Thanks Govs93, you made what is left of my night.

If I am an AD at a private school and the MSHSL forces my programs into a seperate tournament or confines us to one section, watch out. I will go the Shattuck route, remove my school from the state league and openly and actively recruit every top player at every public school in the state. Most likely I would have more to offer academically and now with out regulations I can provide scholarships and financial aide to players I want in my programs. Would I get every player I wanted? Probably not, but I would get kids to come. I could play a tougher schedule with more games, allowing my players to be better prepared for the next level. Then imagine if multiple private schools went this route and you now had 25 Shattuck St. Mary type teams instead of one? Talented players could The talent at the public school level would be considerably diluted. This example might be more on the extreme side, but if you continue to make it tougher for private schools to compete in the tournament what is their incentive to continue to play by your rules? I think the potential negatives far out weigh the positives. Just keep them included.

If you were an AD at a private school, and you did exactly that..................you should be fired.

Seriously, how does a private school benefit from having a state championship hockey team? Does such a thing aid in recruitment of all students? I can't imagine that any academic all-star is influenced by the fact that a school also has a great hockey team. Would they also be influenced by the school also having a kick-arse pep band?

I have to disagree with that statement. You will see more and more private schools popping up around the TC Metro. The market is dictating the growth of private schools. We are going to see the shift of the most talented kids going to private schools grow year after year. This has happened all over the country. Especially on the coasts.

As far as the two class system goes. It has been a boon for hockey in MN. IMO it has been the best move the MSHSL has ever made. If they make the shot clock mandatory for basketball, that would be the second best decision

[/b]Follow what has happened since they went to two classes and 16 teams. More hockey players have gone to private schools. There is a direct correlation between going to those schools and having a better chance of making it to St. Paul. Two classes and 16 teams will do that. Before the two classes HM was the only really good program. Many of the other schools were around, but not nearly as good.

Here's a novel idea...let's get rid of the high schools sponsoring all extra-curricular activities completely. Let all cities and towns create their own club sports like they do in Europe. This way all that money from property taxes and state taxes can go into the young peoples education!

This will completely eliminate the problem of those private schools participating in the beloved tournament!

What...no one likes that idea? Well then quit whining about private schools playing hockey with the public schools. We already have open enrollment so there's an even playing field for everyone. IMO!
