Mike Tice=Les Steckel?
If performances like yesterday's continue, we will start seeing empty seats at the dome. I haven't seen two debacles in a row like that since the gory days of Les Steckel.

Packerboy, I could be wrong on this but the reason for the infatuation with the Vikings comes from the fact that they have been Minnesota's most consistent winning team. They've had some lean years, but nothing like the Twins and Timberwolves (or North Stars when they were here). Coupled with the reality that football is America's favorite spectator sport and it makes sense that the Vikings would be the most popular sports team in Minnesota.

Purple puke
Chris, I think you are right. No doubt athey have been the areas most consistent team at having winning seasons. They have, until lately, been kind of the Boston Red Sox of football.

But it seems to me that the support base and interest is out of wack with what they have done on the field.

Even in their "glory years" they couldnt win a championship. Its been over 25 years since the last Super bowl for goodness sakes.

But there I was on a beautiful September afternoon. Sitting in front of the TV watching that piece of crap.

Re: Purple people eaters
Any sports fan in Minnesota who was around in the '70s has a special spot in their heart for the Vikings. Those teams had character and the fact that they couldn't win the big one may actually make people more fanatical about the team, sort of like the Red Sox fans. I'll stick with my earlier explanation for the popularity among younger fans though.

I was outside painting my garage on Sunday, but I listened on the radio to the whole disaster. I don't know how much more I can take though.

Tice
I dont know anything about coaching football.

I dont know if this guy is a good coach or not.

All I know is that they look poorly coached. Week in and week out, they look like they dont have a clue.

They are undisciplined and constantly confused.

Pull the trigger Ziggy.

I like it.

Build a stadium in Elk River and get Zygi to build cloverleafs at all of the intersections on 101/169 to accomodate the traffic.

I will sit at home and watch the games but use the new Zygi Expressway to get up to the lake all summer.

I like it a lot.

Sugar and Tice and everything nice

We will not be getting our wish.

I cannot recall a situation where a NFL head coach kept his job when his team was in a complete disfunctional dissary like this team is.

The rest of the season should be interesting.

I have a bet that no team in our division will win 7 games.

Any takers?

Re: Sugar and Tice and everything nice
Bears and whoever their QB is will win 5 and take the division and then go on to win the Super Bowl. They will end up with a sub-.500 record overall and Madden will have a heart attack.
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Re: Tice
Yes it's still open, I haven't been there yet, I've been invited, but haven't gotten to it yet. Oh well, not like I swing that way anyways. Me and my friends are planning on going on ladie's night, pretty excited about that.
Much Love
-Cloquet

packerboy said:

"I cannot recall a situation where a NFL head coach kept his job when his team was in a complete disfunctional dissary like this team is."

I can't say that I blame you, but you must have erased the godawful Les Steckel era from your mind, packerboy. Here are scores from that awful year:

Week | Opponent | Result | Score |
+--------+-------------------------------+----------+---------+
| 1 | San Diego Chargers | L | 13-42 |
| 2 | at Philadelphia Eagles | L | 17-19 |
| 3 | Atlanta Falcons | W | 27-20 |
| 4 | at Detroit Lions | W | 29-28 |
| 5 | Seattle Seahawks | L | 12-20 |
| 6 | at Tampa Bay Buccaneers | L | 31-35 |
| 7 | at Los Angeles Raiders | L | 20-23 |
| 8 | Detroit Lions | L | 14-16 |
| 9 | at Chicago Bears | L | 7-16 |
| 10 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | W | 27-24 |
| 11 | at Green Bay Packers | L | 17-45 |
| 12 | at Denver Broncos | L | 21-42 |
| 13 | Chicago Bears | L | 3-34 |
| 14 | Washington Redskins | L | 17-31 |
| 15 | at San Francisco 49ers | L | 7-51 |
| 16 | Green Bay Packers | L | 14-38 |
+--------+-------------------------------+----------+---------+

Those scores look a lot like what we've been going through this season; however, at this point the 1984 team was 2-2. The only defense I can think of for not firing Tice now is that they'll have a better selection of coaches to choose from at the end of the season.

Les was more
I remember. But at least Les established a plan and carried it out. He decided to try to do somehting and did it.

It wasnt successful but I dont remember him having a meeting to ask the players what he should do. Hiring consultants after the 4th game? How ridiculous.

The other thing Chris, that team had very little talent. Not even close to what they have now. They had better than 3-13 talent but they werent very good.

Say, where is old Les these days? Maybe Tice should consult with him.

Re: Les was more
Judging by the game scores, the 1984 Vikings packed it in after the win against Tampa in week 10. As I remember it though there was dissension starting in training camp when Steckel tried to be all hardnosed and old school. If my Google searches are correct he's involved with some Christian organization now.

Assuming Tice will stay for the year, bringing in consultants isn't a bad idea as it's clear that he's overmatched. If Red had spent the money on decent assistants they might not have this problem--or if he'd spent money on a real head coach for that matter.

And packerboy points out Tice's biggest fault, the inconsistent team philosophy, jumping from one plan to another. Maybe Jerry Rhome will get the offense settled but the defense with all the injuries will also need a big tuneup. And this is the kind of thing that should have been settled coming out of training camp.

When you say Bud
I agree that the guy needs all the help he can get. But if he needs to bring in consultants to run a football team, he shouldnt be in the job he is in.

I guess they cant fire him because there is no one else in the orginazation to step in.....or is there?

What about looking for an old guy wearing some camouflage and hanging out in a duck blind somewhere? Just like we did in '84.

Where have you gone Bud Grant.... a state turns its lonley eyes to you..boo hoo hoo.

Come on back Bud......again.

Re: When you say Bud
I too think Tice is overmatched, but old Red left him with his hands tied not paying for good assistants. Loney is a good enough guy, but high school teams have seperate coaches for offensive line and offensive coordinater. I don't know how much Tice has input on the draft, but Spudwell should have his feet held to the fire with the busts he's had lately, especially at his old position.

The other thing I have noticed is that the Vikes don't have a young QB, Culpepper has been up and down over the years and this year he's horrible, I'd just like to see a young guy put in there in garbage time and gain some experiance instead of letting Daunte continue to get beat up, or worse pad his stats by tossing a couple TD's against the opponents 3rd stringers and considering that a "moral victory".

I hate to say it but the Packers will win the division at 6-10, they're the only team in the division that doesn't quit when their down by 2 scores.
