Edina Squirt A
Boardmember,
Can you please tell me who in EP pool play is going to knock them off, and who is going to come out of there pool as #1 seed. I would like to see who you think is going to win that pool. You must think that EP is not that good. I hope you don't think that the Fire is the top team in that pool.

I think the pools in the tourney are very evenly matched. There will many close games. With respect to picking a Pool winner any team in the EP, Chaska, Lakeville South, Fire could come out #1.Messier wrote:Boardmember,

If you like to predict based on past preformance ( If A beats B and B beats C than A beats C theory) Here ya go
Lakeville South beat EP
Chaska beat Lakeville South
Fire beat Lakeville South
Fire won Burnsville Tourney
EP won Consolation at Burnsville
EP can put together a very good first line with their 4 top players, but that will weaken the rest of the lines. Their 2nd year goalie is the stronger goalie.
Chaska like EP can put together a very strong first line, but that would weaken the rest of the lines. Chaska top player probably best player in this pool.
Fire because of their make up are deeper than the other teams but their top players are not as good as the top 96 squirts in their pool. Very good pair of goalies
Lakeville South, small, can put out 1 strong line, decent defense goalie is hot/cold.
#1 Fire
#2 Chaska or EP
Wayzata wins the Tourney!
just remember as one of my "bored" friends has mentioned before, "it is a marathon and not a sprint.
There was a Chaska Squirt A hockey team from about 5 years ago that went undefeated the whole season. It is a very big accomplishment if you can do that. However it never guaranteed that team any additional honors or success as they moved up in the ranks.
Just providing perspective.

Re: Edina Squirt A
How do you like B'villes chances?Using this A,B,C theory they should do well, being they only lost Edina yesterday 5-2,and Wayzata lost to them 9-1,we will forget about the 1st to meetings of Bville vs Edina, but maybe we shouldn't be waisting our time on all this being there only squirts and allboardmember wrote:I think the pools in the tourney are very evenly matched. Boardmember,
? for you. You picked Wayzta to win the Bloomington Tournament. Would you like a chance to repick? Also I would like to hear your thoughts about the winner and when they Face Edina. I would have to say the top two are for sure Edina#1 EP#2 would still keep Wayzata#3 Then not to sure from there have not seen WBL or Eagan.

EP was the surprise team this weekend (even to their parents) they played very good! The rode their top goalie all the way to to the title.
The tourney had allot of great games w/ ( opinion) 4 of the top 5 Metro SQA teams ( maybe 7 of the top 10)....Wayzata, EP, Lakeville N, Maple Grove.. Those 4 teams could beat each other on any given day!
Boardmember,
I would say you are on the money there. Those are 4 real good teams. 3 out of 4 have great goalies, Edina would be unstoppable if they had one of those three goalies. Wayzata has a ton of skill, but is weak I FEEL in nets. I just feel squirt hockey is some of the best to watch. If a coach can get his kids on the team to believe they can win, they will do it, and you don't have to deal with all the stuff coaches of older kids have to deal with from girls to outside stuff.

Couple things
First, I think someone asked this already but are most of the Edina "A" squirts 96s? I think they are but I'm not sure.
Second, Edina does have some EXCEPTIONAL players. That I will admit and attest to - MM keeps cranking them out. BUT, in my opinion most of their success at the "A" squirt level can be attributed to their numbers. Heck, who wouldn't have a good team if they had almost 200 kids to pick from? I heard this from someone else but the truth is at their tryouts they have to focus more on who they are going to cut rather than who they are going to put ON the "A" squad. Now, I don't want to discount some of the good things they are doing in Edina as I think they have it figured out a little better than most associations but it ultimately comes down to a numbers game and the law of averages. More kids to choose from usually mean more talent to choose from - simple as that! Props to Edina for doing a good job with what they have and getting the most out of it.

I always wonder what it's like for a goalie on those really great squirt teams. They probably see a ton of shots in practice, but in game situations, not so much. It's great to be on a winning team, no doubt, but a goalie needs to deal with the mental aspect of digging deep when your team is down...or god forbid, losing...so how do these kids learn to deal with pressure and disappointment when they may never actually face it at a young age?Messier wrote:Boardmember,

Two years ago in March, LPH magazine ran an article submitted by someone, I am assuming a parent or Edina booster, touting that years' Edina Squirt "A" team as possibly the best ever in state history. Their record was fabulous, something like 33-0-2, and the team was obviously a great team. I wonder if someone can researh a little bit and get us a link to the LPH addition that it was in. It does exist, and some of the rhetoric seems similar. Two years have gone by and this, now PWA team, is a very good team, but things have changed. This current SA team is actually one in a long line of very good SA teams from Edina. Same story, different year. Sometimes I think the publicity department in Edina works as hard as their talented coaches and players.

I watched a little of the Bloomington Tourney. I was suprised to see EP played one goalie back to back...he may have played all the games but I don't know. That's pretty pathetic if they did play one goalie more than the other. It's squirts! Squirts should rotate goalies if you have two. I'm pretty sure Edina and Wayzata and others rotate goalies in squirts. I witnessed Edina rotate goalies at Squirt A last year in two tournaments when one goalie was better then the other. I believe Wayzata does it in Peewees too..at least I saw that in the Edina Peewee A tournament as they went with their #2 goalie in the championship game...per parents comments. Congrats to EP, but to me other teams could have beaten them if they really thought that winning a Squirt Tournament was that important.

This is the first time I've read this thread. I've avoided reading it because of the subject. All I know is, I could only read the first couple of threads and I had to go to the bathroom and throw up. You people need to get a life!!! BUT, other jokesters are reading this so get back on the board and keep bragging. (ha ha ha ha)

I remember that article and believe it was one overzealous parent. That Squirt A team was very good yes but not the best one I remember in Edina. The group with Budish/Lee/Everson was better.Lowstickside wrote:Two years ago in March, LPH magazine ran an article submitted by someone, I am assuming a parent or Edina booster, touting that years' Edina Squirt "A" team as possibly the best ever in state history. Sorry to burst your bubble Goldenbear but look at the subject matter for the post. you have parents talking about how great 9 and 10 year olds are and how they are the greatest ever, and then you are surprised teams do what they can to win a tournament? the coaches and parents are in this to win at the A level. its no different where i am from then it is down there. I do not think that it is right, I just think that that is the reality. The development of the player seems to take a back seat to winning games and tournaments. This is unfortunate

PW vs squirt
Can anyone with actual knowledge tell us how many kids rostered on the current PW A Edina team were rostered together 2 years ago as Squirt A's? All 17??? Did any kids change over? If they did, where are the other kids now and why? Are they B players who didn't grow or are they B players who were just out developed in 2 years by other kids who put in the work to get better?
Just curious, as some hype this current group...to consider where is the previously boasted group?

As stated earlier a Chaska Squirt A team went undefeated the whole season 5 years ago. Where are they now? Things change drastically.Tenoverpar wrote:Can anyone with actual knowledge tell us how many kids rostered on the current PW A Edina team were rostered together 2 years ago as Squirt A's? All 17??? Edina Squirt A
I see there is a big game in D6 this weekend between Edina at Eden Prairie in Squirt A. I have seen both these teams play and they are both good in my opionion. Who is going to win this game. I know it is Squirt Hockey but you all know the kids and parents get all fired up for games like this. Has Edina been in a tight game at all this year and what happens if they are and EP can controll the play and limit Edina's scoring chances? I pick Edina 2-1.

I, like many people have avoided this thread. I didn’t open it until Weds morning; this was only after I officiated a game that involved this team. The day before, my brother-in-law called me and asked me if I had seen this team play before. When I realized I had been assigned this game, I looked forward to it. I had heard plenty of banter about this team, and was leery of the hype that can be created by any banter around an Edina team (both positive and negative).
Simply put, this is a fantastic team. I had heard claims that this team could beat Peewee teams out there. The thought went through my mind and I came to the conclusion that Yes, this team could beat many Peewee teams that I have officiated. They are that good. What separates this team from many other teams is the depth of the individual talent along with solid team play. The players on this team have obviously worked hard and long to develop the skill that they individually brought to this team. There has obviously been a lot of time (and most likely money) put into the development of this team. Do not go through the effort of jumping in on the money comment (positively or negatively), the skill that has been developed has been achieved by the individual effort of each player. Take a look at their record and you tell by the start of the season that this team was already developed.
I understand that these are only squirts. I also understand that this is an Edina team. But….Until you see this team play, I would encourage you to avoid all the crap that you can throw out there about only being squirts and from Edina. These kids have worked hard and if it is only their 15 mins of fame, they definitely have earned my respect.
With regard to all of the excuses that you can come up with, with regard to the amount of players involved in the Edina hockey association, I would say settle down. There are bigger associations out there that do not measure up to what this association brings to the plate. Edina is doing something right across the entire association. Pay attention and try to replicate it, because whatever it is they are doing it right.
Now, just to squash all your concerns and potential accusations. I am not from Edina. I grew up in Southwest Mpls hating Edina. It is with an open mind and plenty of exposure over the past few years of officiating in District 6 that brings me to my observations and opinions.

Great post and I'd like to add when you have many coaches who grew up playing and experiencing success in communities such as Edina or Roseau etc. they often translate into coaches who usually are there for the long haul and coaching for their love of the game and their communities; not just to get their own kids on the power play. Any community that has this dynamic with respect to their coaches benefits greatly.
