Wayzata hasn't lost since January 7th. Minnetonka lost on Feb 11th and has only won 2 of their last 5 games (with two of those being Wayzata ties).

Tough call.

Mule's got the logic right....

Some of the homer arguments on here regarding Edina and "haven't loss since January" are quite funny. Look at the records....Tonka has one loss and Wayzata has 2. Tonka has two ties and Wayzata has 3. Wayzata has never beat Tonka and vice versa. If you use the Edina argument which is a weak one (OTL by Tonka) then you have to look at Wayzata's loss to Jefferson and Benilde and Tonka's win over EP who beat Jefferson who beat Wayzata... and let's not forget the tie of OSSEO by Wayzata...ugh... No logical person can conclude that Tonka is not the #1 seed... Sorry homers...

Yes, Minnetonka deserves 1st seed. Looking at the last half of the season? Wayzata would get first.

Section 6AA

Post by blueblood »

I don't think everyone penciled in Tonka. Anyone who follows hockey closely knows that's a dangerous thing to do in one and done format.

we also knew that section 6AA was going to be tough in the pre-season with 5 talented teams:

EP - defending champs
tonka - D1 talent everyhere
wayzata - '09 bantam a champs (see my pre-season post where I compare the wayzata bantam team from '09 to the '08 ep bantam team)
bsm - with meyers in net, can win on any given nite
hopkins - ditto to above with the "fonz" in net

IMO if tonka, wayzata or ep wins 6AA they will be the #1 seed at state. too bad they all play in the same section...

seeding criteria?

Post by blueblood »

r u kidding?

The coaches vote on the teams in their section. There is no mandated criteria used. They do what we do on this board - review the teams they played, their recordds, common opponents; etc...

A conference championship or a schwan's cup gold division win are not reasons to seed...

Examples:
EP wins Lake Conference title. Tonka beats EP. Who is better?
Wayzata wins Classic Lake. Tonka and Wayzata tie twice. Who is better?

You can argue either way on Tonka or Wayzata no.1 seed. Might be a big difference based on the line matching from last night's game. #1 seed is an advantage. If two teams are in the same conference, that crown should be important. Plus they miss EP in the semis.

When you think about, it is really unfair to have Wayzata, Tonka and EP all in the same section. All three teams belong in the State Tournament and only one gets to go.

This is too bad and not really fair to two really good hockey teams.

Also, Section 2AA has three top ten teams in it.

I hope they fix this imbalance when they redo the sections this spring. Right now, we know that at least four of the very best teams will not get to go to St. Paul.

I think the loss to BSM is what will hurt Wayzata as that's a section team and Tonka didn't lose to a section opponent.

I doubt you'll see a change in section alignment to move the remaining CLC team to other sections. As much as people say they want "all" the best teams at state there's something to be said to regional representation as that's part of the history of the tournament.

Wayzata has a nice team and any team that comes out of 6AA will earn it and probably have the #1 seed... not that #1 helped Edina last year.

I think you are right about not moving the CLC teams, but balance would be easy to get without affecting region representation. Move Wayzata to 5AA and Holy Angels to 3AA or 4AA, both in exchange for a mid-level team. You have the traditionally strong metro programs spread out among the regions.

Wayzata with the other 763 power programs.

Holy Angels maybe with HM? Woodbury? Cretin?

EP and Minnetonka

Edina and jefferson.

MTKA defense will really have to step it up when these two teams meet in the section final. Krueger has been above expectations and the PP is always good. Having 3 D1 defenseman they should have a much more controlling presence in these big games. I hope they step it up a little and play the way they need to.

Couldn't agree with you more. I saw Tonka play Edina in the Schwans final and saw the Tonka D take over with physical play and a killer instinct. I saw them play Wayzata at Pagel this past Thursday and saw none of it. For their size and supposed skill, the Tonka D were way too passive. They lost too many races to the puck, allowed too many shots, and were of little help to Krueger. Unless they, and the rest of the team starts playing to win instead of hoping they don't lose, they'll never make it out of sections.
