Missing "Bemidji". District 9 hosts and has two teams (Moorhead 1st seed, Bemidji 2nd seed) making a ten team tournament.

VFW Hockey 101

Most of this has been covered on this board elsewhere but I will give my due dilligence and try not to confuse anyone:

There are 2 state tournaments at the Bantam 'A' level. The MAHA state tourney which concluded last week and the VFW state tourney which will take place this coming weekend.

The primary difference between the two is the districting and sponsorship. There are 9 VFW districts in the state of Minnesota. These are not the same as the MAHA districts. Example Moorhead and Bemidji are both in VFW district 9. However, Moorhead is in MAHA district 15 and Bemidji is in MAHA district 16.

Each Bantam 'A' team that is sponsored by their local VFW post in their district is eligible to play for the VFW state title. This is ran a little differently than the MAHA state in that there is no regional playoff's only district playoff's. The champion from each district then advances to the state tourney, with the only exception being the host district. The host district (for the state tourney) gets 2 seeds. The first being the winner of the district championship and the second being the host seed. Should the host team win their district then the host seed goes to the second place team in the district. This sets up a 10 team tournament which looks like this: http://www.moorheadyouthhockey.com/ and click on the 2007 bracket link.

So, if your team is fortunate enough to go to MAHA state it is possible for them to also earn a birth at VFW state. Once every few years a really good team is fortunate enough to win both titles in the same year.

Good luck to all of the teams at the VFW State Tournament this weekend. I for one am looking forward to a great weekend of hockey!
