NAHL Showcase is it really another level of tryouts?
Is the showcase another chance to view how the players perform before making more cuts or trades? Some teams have 3 goalies and extra forwards and Defense. We are new to this, how does it really work from people who have been there before. Thanks for your input.

Hawksfan some teams do bring in extra players at the beginning of the season. Most teams have players that they know are going to make the team. There might be several players that were about equal at tryouts so coaches bring those players back at the beginning of the season. The coaches then get to watch them in preseason games and at the showcase to see which players they think will be a better fit for the team. Each team will end up with a max of 25 players, so if they are bringing in more than that there will be cuts.

Thanks. Do some teams have 3 goalies? Do they start with 3 and cut one later is season?Pucking Around wrote:Hawksfan some teams do bring in extra players at the beginning of the season. You should be able to do some research on teams to see what their roster looked like last year. I think you can also check "Pointstreak" to see what transactions took place last year and that can give you an indication of what each team does as far as goalies or numbers.
To answer your first question: All pre-season stuff is tryout time. If a player is on the bubble, they need to really put out their A game during that time. If your son is a goalie, then be open to whatever can happen. I've seen teams go through several goalies in a year (or any position, for that matter) and other teams that get their team in order early, and don't have much movement.
Good luck to you and your son!!

Took the above advice and checked out Point Streak! Some interesting numbers out there. To attempt to answer the goaltender question, at least in the NAHL, it appears that teams had a primary goalie who played in 58.1% of the games. The secondary goalie played in 31.5% of the games and for those teams that rostered a third goalie (some did) they averaged playing in 8.4% of the games. Numbers don't look good for that 3rd goalie. One bad game and their point in the rotation might take a while to come back!
