St. Paul, MN. August 7, 2007 – Minnesota Hockey and the Girl Scouts are partnering on a program called Put the Biscuit in the Net (PBN) for 3rd to 6th graders. The PBN program is designed to expose Girl Scouts to the sport of girls’ ice hockey, as part of the “Girl Sport” program, rather than a “Learn to Play” hockey program. Instruction is done the “Girl Scout” way by using the songs, symbols, pledges and hand signals of the Girl Scouts to teach the FUNdamentals of hockey.

The first PBN clinic is scheduled for September 28-30, 2007, at the Bloomington Ice Gardens, 3600 West 98th Street, Bloomington, Minnesota. Comprised of one-hour sessions on three consecutive days, the program will introduce Girl Scouts to skating basics, sticks and pucks known as twigs and biscuits and finishes with cross-ice games. Clinic emphasis will be on sportsmanship, respect and having fun learning a new sport.

Girl Scouts must register through the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis Program Registrar at 763-971-4052. The program is limited to the first 50 Girl Scouts who must attend all sessions of the three day clinic to earn their participation patch.

The Minnesota Whitecaps, Minnesota’s premier women’s hockey team, has proclaimed Saturday, September 29, 2007, as Girl Scout Day. The Minnesota Whitecaps and the University of Minnesota Duluth women’s team face off at 12:30 p.m. at Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota. Girl Scouts who wear their uniform will get into the game free with a paying adult. The players will meet the Girl Scouts and sign autographs after the game. Several Olympians play for the Minnesota Whitecaps, including Natalie Darwitz, Brooke White, Tricia Dunn-Luoma and Jenny Potter.

Minnesota Hockey is also looking for USA Hockey certified and screened coaches interested in participating in this program as trainers and on-ice assistants. For more information on the program, contact Shaun Walsh, Girls Services Manager, Sports and Wellness, at 763-971-4052 (swalsh@girlscoutsmpls.org) or Lynn Olson, Minnesota Hockey, at 612-861-2671 (lynnolson01@aol.com).
