worst refs and worst calls

Post by Don Morelli »

* this is not a thread for best refs * this is the place to share your opinion on worst refs and worst calls. It might be a good idea to start a "best ref and best calls thread" but that is up to you.

So go ahead share it :

here is one I heard this weekend

boys get run from behind : checking from behind as written :
penalty called : 2 minutes for checking, " why not checking from behind"
because squirts can't check, so just a checking penalty.

Ref : unkown

I was watching my little brothers hockey game this weekend at one of his tournaments. He was called for tripping when he checked a kid, this was a Bantam B1 game. Apparently the ref thought he stuck his leg out and tripped the kid? The refs had a few more interesting calls the rest of that game. Another kid in the game recieved a penalty (refs were whistle happy), both teams were already skating 3 v 3. They sent the kid to the box and had him sit and serve his time but waited for all the penalties to clear the board and then put his 2 min. on the board.

The worst part about the referees in the stands, they only call it one way.

hockeyjunkie2,

Depending on the timing of the penalties and how they were “doled” out, this is no surprise. Once you get beyond 2 players in the box, the delayed penalty rule comes into play. Because no team can skate less than 4 players (4th typically the goalie), the 3rd penalty time is delayed until the 1st one expires. Assuming that the 3 on 3 was a result of penalties that occurred at different times (no co-incidentals), then the officials (on ice and off ice) made the correct call with regard to penalty times. Additionally, the player with the first penalty cannot leave the box after his penalty expires until either, the next stoppage of play or the 2nd penalty has expired. Furthermore, the 2nd can not leave the box after his penalty time has expired until either, the next stoppage of play or the 3rd penalty has expired. The 3rd player leaves the box after his penalty has expired at the next stoppage of play, and never during play as there is already equal numerical strength. This is assuming there are no goals scored. In the event that a goal is scored things, change. Want an explanation, ask..
