Great coaches. and What makes them so good.

Post by dmbenough2Bagoalie »

I've seen some recent posts that seem to suggest that coaches are awful and have no heart or respect for other opponents and was wondering if there are any out there that are worth knowing. I was also wondering if there are any worth mentioning what qualities do they posses to make them so good.

dmbenough2Bagoalie - From a goalie this is a great post!

Coaches who develop players, teach the game, develop discipline, make the kids stronger, better people, let them have fun and build life skills in leadership and team interaction - these are greater than wins and losses but coaches who take this approach seem to develop winning teams and programs. Here are some that impress me:

Dave Palmquist, SSP - developed a winning tradition and really develops players and has sent a number of players forward to play at D1 schools. He is always teaching, smiling and encouraging.
Tony Schied, Stillwater - has helped a whole community commit to girls hockey success (young girls want to stay/play there and they want to win State Championships) has done a great job developing players and depth in the program. The success last year was from having and playing three good lines - not many coaches are willing to shift and rotate three lines - but the result is the best players can go at 100% on every shift they are out - late in the game that is huge against teams that play the top unit 70% of the game - the top unit is shot by the third period or come playoff time at the end of the year and those on the bench are prepared to contribute.
Bill Schafhauser, Hill Murray - although he is a first year girls coach he is doing a lot of things right. He is teaching and developing the game, he is trying to run four lines at the varsity level in games, he stresses team play, he has the team playing defensive hockey and has great puck movement. He has the team involved in all types of community service/team building - every player is committed to doing 40 service events. He has many development practices that involve Varsity and JV and all appear to have made big strides forward in a short time.
Jeff Keyes, Cretin - Jeff really knows the game and because he has a limited number of players he has to develop what he has. He is quite but does a great job. He will be missed by the program if he decides to step down after his daugheter graduates this year.
