Great Goalie Performances
Use this thread to give credit to outstanding goalie performances throughout the season - just add to the list. Here are two from this past Saturday 12/1/07:
1. Nikki Haralson stopped 41 of 42 shots to help her Wayzata team tie Edina 1-1. In the game Wayzata was outshot by a 42-14 margin.
2. Kari Hunter of Bloomington Kennedy made 48 saves to preserve a 2-1 victory over Shakopee, which outshot Kennedy 49-11.

Add Brie from PL to the list. She had 49 shots on goal VS Chaska first game of the season and Chaska completely dominated the game. PL won 4-1.

Danielle Justice from Alexandria was named the Central Lakes Conference Performer of the Week. She was awarded for her first 4 games where she only allowed 2 goals & had recorded 2 shut outs.
She recorded 41 saves against the GRG team and also 41 saves against Moorhead. Her overall record is currently at 0.69 GAA and 0.966 SV% for 369:15 minutes played.

Lots of shots and lots of saves. She could be a MS goalie candidate along with Carpenter who is fabulous.
It's awsome to give a goalie credit when its due. Like being a lineman in football; just a workhorse, running backs get all the glory unless you do something spectacular. 30, 40, 50+ games are great stats and usually do showcase some highlight reel saves, however how many of us have seen games where if you put a scarecrow in the net 40 saves could be had. I was at a top ranked teams game on Tues and one goalie had 40+ saves with a hand full of grinders, however the majority of shots were hit right at her. Did the goalie have a great game? On paper yes. Was at another game recently and the winning goalie had 15 saves but she stood on her head to get them! The 15 save game had me wanting to see the goalie get more shots just to see what she was going to do next. The 40+ game was pretty non eventful.
We are going to see some awsome goalie performances this year. This is a good thread, report them when you see them.

Great points! The point should also be made that there are many goalies that can't make many of the saves that are shot right at them, so there is a lot to be said for a goalie that makes any amount of saves over the number of say 20, as they are working that whole time! Yet completely agree with the low save count, where most all were outstanding saves, and the goalie kept their team in the game.goalzilla wrote:It's awsome to give a goalie credit when its due. Well said all. The box score doesn't reveal quality scoring opportunities but you can draw some conclusions based on an opposing team's personnel and past offensive performances against quality opponents. We know for certain Stillwater has a potent offense and good scorers so a goalie can expect nearly every save to be a test of their skills.hockey_rocker wrote:Just for the record the WBL goalie stood on her head against Stillwater. Lots of saves through screens and down low in the crease. But goalzilla makes a great point. Lots of 40-50 saves game but sometimes the quality scoring chances aren't there.
It's also true if a game is very lopsided, goals can be scored on the 3rd or 4th rebound if the defense is incapable of clearing or tying up. I've also seen teams that play a tight D box who give up a lot of perimeter shots but few true quality scoring opportunities. There just aren't that many snipers in girls hockey, but the teams that have a couple will usually have a dozen quality scoring oppotunities in a game.
Kennedy Hunter
Saw her personally stop 47 of 48 against Cooper and she looked unreal. Diving all over and many close in rebounds. Is she going to a D1 College?

Goalie Performance
Kelsey McCann of Champlin Park faced 22 shots Tuesday night against Coon Rapids in the FIRST period in keeping the game tied 1-1 after the first and helped the Rebels knock off the Cardinals 4 - 2. Of the 22 shots taken by Coon Rapids in the first, many were point blank ones. She singlehandedly held off the Cardinals until the rest of the team woke up.
Mara Sobczak from Stillwater had what I think is the best goalie performance I have seen so far this year. Lead her team to a 3-2 win over Roseville. Stillwater was out shot 38-25. Sobczak made 36 saves and many of them were ones you stop when you are in THE ZONE. Really a great effort. Looking at her YTD stats she is having a terriffic year, unfortunately she doesnt get much recognition. If she continues to play like she has so far this year she'll be hard to forget.
goalzilla, :
I totally disagree... with a few exceptions, a great goalie looks boring. This is called positioning, angles, a goalie who has to make amazing saves is for the most part doing so because they start out of position. Are there exceptions? Yes, But check out t Bill Howard (Wisconsin Bagers goalie coach). This is how he teaches... and with 8+ NHL goalies as former students, I'd say he knows what he is talking about.
Good example is the post on Bonapace-Potvin. She has come a long way since her days with the Fairmont Cards. She is doing something right!

Geez folks here I always thought a great goalie was one who kept the puck out of the net . I hate todays concept of one way to play the position. My opinion the same style does not work for everybody. Why would you try and force something unnatural on a person. Alot of the excitment has been taken from the game through this mass production of the perceived "right way " to play the position. I have seen 10 year old kids being trained to play paddle down, heck they arent even strong enough to lift the stick . Oh yes and everyone wants to butterfly because so and so does it. Not dumb enough to think I can change it but sure would if I could .carddad wrote:goalzilla, :

Agree! There are basic fundamental skills that all goalies must possess, but you certainly see different styles of playing the position even in the NHL, which has most of the world's best. Same in MLB with hitters and pitchers - what works for some doesn't translate equally well to everyone else.Media wrote:Geez folks here I always thought a great goalie was one who kept the puck out of the net . How true the same style does not work for everyone but ultimately keeping the puck out of the net is what makes a great goalie.MNHockeyFan wrote:Agree! an example of what is right for one but not for another is Bret Favre he has one of the most unlikley styles that no coach would dare to teach but it has worked well for him.
Here we go again not there doesn't know. If so, not much about tending(ovservation). On a number of Sobczak's saves she was in the fly and made saves on multiple rebounds with pads and a quick glove. Saves you dont make if not in position. I seen her in a couple games earlier in the season and her technique was as sound as you mention it should be, but shot quality was sub-par and made the game pretty much a practice exercise in angle, positioning and technique for her. Would I say that was an awsome performance? No, that's why it wasn't posted. As I mentioned in an earlier post, if shot quality is poor the goalie should be able to stop 30-40-50-..... shots. In comparison, if they were to face 15 shots all quality break aways and stop 13 which is the great performance? As far as bringing the NHL into it, watch Bordeur, Hasek or Turco when they are getting pounded they're not too worried about postioning; just stopping the puck. If they stop the puck gee I would say they were in the right position at that moment. In any level of goaltending you build a stong fundimental base then develop your style, but when it comes down to it you do what you do to stop the puck and dont worry about what you look like doing it! I too know a little bit about coach Howard, my kid has been coached by him as well as Elkin.
Great saves or not, these goalies are not going anywhere, not against the competion they play against. Slow poor shots etc. Look at where the past two bigtime MN goalies are now Joanna Elison and Alna Macready (By the way much better then who are currently in HS) they are riding the pine. D1 are doing to take and play goalie that either play boys hockey or play a prep school schedule. I watched the Cooper game referenced and those shots were at a squirt level at best.
