Biggest surprises and emerging challengers

Post by keepitreal »

As a more positive counter to the "disappointments" thread, I think it's time to talk about the surprise and/or emerging teams who are doing better than expected or are challenging the expected top teams. As they have done in the boy's, Northern Minnesota is resurging in both A and AA. This year's tournament should be outstanding, and there should be some epic battles in several sections.

Class AA

Duluth (and PHM)-- didn't see this one coming. 7AA is going to be a real dogfight this year and all the teams in this section will benefit from the elevated level of play.

Hopkins-- Not a big surprise, but clipping conference nemisis Edina has boosted their confidence. With Benilde struggling and Wayzata falling back a bit, the Royals may have moved into the role of section favorite if they can keep it going.

Irondale-- Another team you could see coming on strong last year has had a nice start. We'll have to see how things look as their schedule gets tougher.

Minnetonka-- A series of close losses against top teams has been followed by a couple of nice wins. This team is coming together rapidly and could emerge as a Cinderella come playoff time.

Moorhead-- A solid upset over Holy Angels gets your attention and Bemidji is struggling.

Elk River-- A nice string of wins including over a leauge leader Centennial team has pulled them into the race along with Blaine, who handed the Elks their only loss.

Class A

Warroad-- With only one loss to AA powerhouse AHA and a tie against #1/#2 ranked Eden Prairie, Warroad will head down to the Schwan's Cup and we'll get a good look at this surprising team against some more tough competition.

Roseau-- Like Warroad, the Rams have emerged from the shadow of Crookston, and with a scrappy East Grand Forks team will make the playoffs very interesting in section 8A.

South St. Paul-- They're back and playing some good hockey. Good senior leadership and goaltending.

Mankato West-- New Prague might have some surprising competition in section 2A. We'll see...
