Another way to look at peewee A teams (part 4)
Jan 28, 2008
The following summarizes the Districts by top teams and what they have done in the last week (Jan 20 to Jan 27) and what they will be doing this week. I have grouped the Districts into the Regions they will be playing to go to state. I have then ranked the top teams in each region. The top two of each region go to state. The projected state peewee A tourney draw is shown at the end of this post.
North Region (at Cloquet Feb 29 to March 2): Coon Rapids had a misstep on its march to the D10 title being upset by Cambridge/Isanti. Elk River stumbled in D10 and is replaced by St. Cloud. The D12 teams will be tested this week by D15 leader, Little Falls and by a contending D6 team, Chaska. But after all the dust was settled this week, the top two ranked teams remain unchanged.
1-Coon Rapids*
2-Cloquet*
3-St. Cloud
4-Grand Rapids
5-Hermantown
North Region is summarized by districts below.
D10 Summary: In a key set of league games, Coon Rapids has widened their lead by winning 3 of 4 league games. St. Cloud won three league games. Unfortunately the one Coon Rapids loss left the door open for St. Cloud. They now need to win their last two games to capture the title. St. Cloud has a good chance to win out and post 55 points. Coon Rapids holds the tie breaker and needs 4 of 6 points to post 55 points, but one slip by either team can give one of two D10 seeds to the other. A slip by both teams can open the door yet for Blaine and Elk River. But Coon Rapids and St. Cloud each control its own destiny.
Elk River folded, losing to both of these teams to seriously dent their run at the title. The Elks and Blaine can take the seed by stringing together wins in the next two weeks, but both Coon Rapids and St. Cloud would have to stumble. They need all their points and they play each other. Coon Rapids will play their last two league games after all the other contenders have completed their league schedule.
D10-#1-Coon Rapids (Last week: beat Andover 6-1, beat Elk River 2-1, beat Sauk Rapids 9-1, and lost to Cambridge/Isanti 2-0; Coming week: play in the New Hope Tourney and draw Roseville in the opening game).
D10-#2-St. Cloud (Last week: beat Elk River 3-2, beat Cambridge/Isanti 3-1 and beat Rogers 8-1; Coming week: play SFNB and Champlin Park)
D10-#2-Elk River (Last week: lost to St. Cloud 3-2, lost to Coon Rapids and Andover in league play; Coming week: play Andover, Anoka, SF/NB and Blaine)
D11 Summary: Cloquet continues to play well. They were the only D11 team to beat Apple Valley this week. Rankings remain unchanged. Duluth East will carry the flag in the White Bear Lake tourney. Cloquet will playing in their own tourney.
D11-#1-Cloquet (Last week: play Superior and beat Apple Valley 4-1; Coming week; play in own tourney opening against Buffalo)
D11-#2-Duluth East (Last week: beat Duluth Lakers 5-1 and lost to Apple Valley 5-0; Coming week: play in the White Bear Lake Tourney and draw Wayzata in the opener.)
D11-#3-Hermantown (Last week: beat the Thunder Bay Kings 3-2 and then lost to them 9-4 and lost to Apple Valley 7-0; Coming week: play Duluth East)
D12 Summary: No change. Grand Rapids remains unchallenged in this district. Chaska and Little Falls are making a swing through D12 this weekend.
D12-#1-Grand Rapids (last week: play Superior and International Falls; Coming week: play Chaska and Little Falls)
D12-#2-Virginia (Last week: Play in Eveleth Tourney, beat Hibbing and Eveleth and played Cottage Grove; Coming week: play Duluth Lakers, Chaska and Little Falls)
D12-#3-Hibbing (Last week: Played in Eveleth Tourney, beat Eveleth, lost to Virginia and Cottage Grove; Coming week:).
East Region (at St. Louis Park Feb 29 to March 2): This region remains tough. But there is no change. Wayzata locked up the D3 title. Eagan looks to have locked up the D8 crown. North St. Paul climbed to the top of D2. But with all that, the East Region rankings remain unchanged. Wayzata and Lakeville South may have a shot at one another before regions if they both get to the finals of the White Bear Lake Tourney. But top teams from D6 are entered also in that tourney.
1-Woodbury*
2-Wayzata*
3-Lakeville South
4-North St. Paul
5-Maple Grove
East Region is summarized by districts below.
D8 Summary: Eagan had the D8 title needing only to beat Hastings in their last league game and tied, but a tie maybe all they needed to get the title. Providing they got their “unfairplay” point, then they got the championship. If not, then it opens the the door for Woodbury who has two tough games and Lakeville South who has two league games remaining. They play each other in one of those games. The Lakeville South/Woodbury game would then determine the D8 championship. Lakeville South added two more league wins this past week and with those wins this tied Woodbury in league points. South is still unbeaten in league play.
D8 #1-Woodbury (This week: beat Rosemount; Coming week: play Sibley and Tartan)
D8-#2-Lakeville South (This week: beat SSP/IGH 3-1 and Hastings 4-2; Coming week: play in White Bear Lake Tourney and draw Eden Prairie in a get even game?)
D8-#2-Eagan (Last week: beat Lakeville North 7-0 and tied Hastings 4-4 to end league play and most likely win the D8 Championship. But they can’t be crowned until next week. Coming week: play Tartan and play in the Alexandria Tourney draw Mankato in opener).
D3 Summary: Unchanged. Wayzata beat Maple Grove 5-1 to lock up the D3 title. They hold a one game lead with one game to play and hold the tie breaker over Maple Grove. Maple Grove played well in winning the Hastings Tourney two weeks ago, but has had problems since then. They had a poor showing in St. Cloud tourney and could be challenged by other D3 teams. Hopkins, Orono, Armstrong and North Metro have all been working hard to improve. The #2 and #3 seeds could both be up in the air come playoff time in three weeks.
D3-#1-Wayzata (Last week: beat Armstrong 3-2, Lakeville North 4-2, and Maple Grove 5-1; play in White Beat Lake Tourney and open against Rochester Red.)
D3-#2-Maple Grove (Last week: lost to Wayzata 5-1; Coming week: idle)
D3-#3-Hopkins (Last week: tied Orono 2-2; Coming week: play Como, North Metro and Eastview)
D2 (Playoffs Feb 15 to Feb 24). D2 Summary: NSP took over first this week with two league games to go, one against White Bear Lake who fell to second by losing to Moundsville. These two teams tangle for what could be the D2 title in two weeks in the last league game on their respective schedules. White Bear Lake and North St. Paul appear to have edged out a small lead over the other teams, but if either stumbles in their other remaing league game, they could drop to fourth or fifth. Moundsville and Roseville still have three games to play and can overtake White Bear Lake and North St. Paul if they lose. Forest Lake still has a chance, but the light is growing dim. White Bear Lake carries the D2 flag into its own tourney, opening against Duluth East.
D2-#1-North St Paul (Last week: beat Tartan 4-2; Coming week: play in Cloquet tourney and draw Cambridge/Isanti in the opener, a team they beat 6-5 in the Owatonna tourney in December.)
D2-#2-Roseville (Last week; tied Moundsview 2-2; Coming week: play Irondale and play in New Hope Tourney, draw Coon Rapids in opener.)
D2-#3-Moundsville (Last week: beat White Bear Lake 3-2, tied Roseville 2-2 and tied Forest Lake 2-2. That gives them a league record of 3-1-7 and worthy of being the #3 seed this week; Coming week: play Mahtomedi)
South Region (at Chaska Feb 29 to March 2): Eden Prairie beat Edina in the last league game to win the D6 regular season championship. This week they are the favorites to take the #1 seed in the D6 playoffs. Edina finishes second and Apple Valley most likely third. South Region looks to still be the domain of the three D6 fighting for the two Regional seeds. Faribault beat Mpls Park in their own tourney and move up.
1-Eden Prairie (to the champion, goes the spoils)*
2-Edina*
3-Apple Valley
4-Faribault
5-Mpls Park
South Region is summarized by districts below.
D6 (Playoffs Feb 9 to Feb 17) D6 Summary: Eden Prairie emerges with the #1 seed in the D6 playoffs, Edina has the #2 spot. Both teams will have a first round bye in the D6 playoffs. Apple Valley and Chaska will most likely tie for third with the #3 seed going to Chaska. Apple Valley would then take the #4 seed. Burnsville will likely get the #5 seed. The #6 seed will go to the winner of a three team single elimination playoff. That draw will most likely be Jefferson playing versus Prior Lake with the winner playing Minnetonka for the #6 seed. Edina and Eden Prairie are in the White Bear Lake tourney, but in opposite brackets.
D6-#1-Eden Prairie (Last week: ended D6 play by taking first place and a D6 first round bye in the D6 playoffs. They beat Kennedy 8-1, Burnsville 2-1 in OT and Edina 2-1; Coming week: play in White Bear Lake Tourney and open against Lakeville South in a repeat of the Edina Tourney game that the South lost 6-2)
D6-#2-Edina (Last week: Clinched D6 second place in regular season play and a first round bye in the D6 playoffs by beating Shakopee and losing to Eden Prairie; Coming week: play in White Bear Lake Tourney opening against D10 team Centennial)
D6-#3-Apple Valley (Last week: lost to Chaska 3-1, lost to Cloquet 4-1, beat Duluth East 5-0 and Hermantown 7-0 ending a eight day schedule where they played 9 games on the road going 6-2-1; Coming week: play Kennedy)
D4 Summary: D4 is combined with D8, but not for playoffs. Faribault and Mankato, and New Prague are close. Faribault and New Prague are in the East conference, but only Faribault, New Prague, Owatonna and Austin are playing a full schedule, the other teams listed will be part of D8 playoffs this year. Faribault has the edge over the other three for the East title in points and has played fewer games then their nearest competitor, New Prague. In the Central conference there are six Minnesota teams competing and Mankato has the championship locked if they play 16 league games. But who knows?
D4-#1-Faribault (Last week: beat Northfield 3-0 and played in own tourney and beat Mpls Park 6-2; Coming week: play Albert Lea, Farmington and Rochester Black)
D4-#2-New Prague (Last week; beat Redwood Falls 6-0 and Marshall 5-2; Coming week: Play Mankato and play in New Hope Tourney, draw Eastview in opener)
D4 #2-Mankato (Last week: Play Mason City: Coming week: play New Prague and play in Alexandria tourney draw Eagan in opener)
D1 Summary: Mpls Park and Irondale each have one league game to play. Mpls Park’s game will be a tough one against Highland on Feb 10. Irondale plays Johnson, but the league championship may not be decided until the 10th. Highland and Washburn will battle for third. Mpls Park has had a good St. Cloud tourney two weeks ago and they followed it was a good showing in Faribault. They now carry the flag to Cloquet where a good showing will do well for D1.
D1-#1-Mpls Park (Last week: beat St. Paul Johnson 5-0, played in Faribault Tourney and beat Red Wing 9-2, tied Fon du Lac 0-0 and lost to Faribault 6-2; Coming week: play in Cloquet Tourney, draw Hastings in opener).
D1-#2-Irondale (Last week: lost to Moundsview 8-2 on outdoor ice; Coming week: play Roseville)
D1-#3-Highland (Last week: beat Washburn 2-1; Coming week: play St. Paul Johnson)
West Region(at Brainerd Feb 29 to March 2): Roseau rapped off three league wins to lock up the D16 title, but there was no excitement in this region in the past week. Hence, there are no changes in the rankings. But Little Falls has planned a tour through D12 that could prove interesting this week end.
1-Roseau*
2-Little Falls*
3-Mound Westonka
4-TRF
5-EGF
West Region is summarized by districts below.
D5 (Playoffs Feb 17 to Feb 24). D5 summary: Mound Westonka, Sartell and Buffalo remain in a three way race. Sartell tied Buffalo this week, but unless one team can emerge and show dominance, this fight for the league title and guaranteed Regional seed may go down to the last regular season game. Buffalo is off to Cloquet and draws a tough Cloquet team in the opener, while Sartell is in the New Hope Tourney, drawing its host, Armstrong in the opener.
D5-#1-Mound Westonka (Last week: beat Willmar 11-1; Coming week: play Orono and Buffalo?)
D5-#2-Buffalo (Last week: tied Sartell 3-3 and beat River Lakes 9-3; Coming week: play in Cloquet Tourney draw Cloquet in opener).
D5-#2-Sartell (Last week: played MAML and tied Buffalo 3-3; Coming week: play in New Hope Tourney draw Armstrong)
D15 summary: Little Falls has emerged as the top team here. They played in their own tourney last week and have a northern tour planned to play D12 teams. No change here for this week.
D15-#1-Little Falls (This week; played in their own tourney; Coming week: play Grand Rapids, Virginia and Chaska?)
D15-#2-Fergus Falls (This week: play Fargo Raiders; Coming week: play in their own tourney)
D15-#3-Brainerd (because they are the host)
D16 Summary: Roseau added three league wins and has a lock on the D16 league championship. EGF added a couple of wins to take second. TRF played outside the league and lost to the Wheatkings. These two teams will battle for second, but EGF has the advantage. There is a gap developing between these teams and the remainder of the league. The next big event for D16 should be the Warroad Tourney in two weeks.
D16-#1-Roseau (Last week: beat Hallock 11-0, beat Bemidji 8-0 and beat Crookston 9-3; Coming week: play Moorhead and International Falls)
D16-#2-TRF (Last week: lost to Grand Forks Wheatkings 9-5 and played LOW: Coming week: play Moorhead)
D16-#3-East Grand Forks (Last week: beat Grafton 5-3, beat Crookston 7-0 and beat Warroad 5-0; Coming week: play Moorhead, LOW and Hallock).
Projected State Tourney Team draw, W1 versus S2, N1 versus E2, S1 versus West 2 and E1 versus N2
Roseau vs Edina (Edina took second knocking Valley out)
Coon Rapids vs Wayzata (no change)
Eden Prairie vs Little Falls (EP took the title from Edina)
Woodbury vs Cloquet (no change)

I am going by some data posted two weeks ago. Some times the district officals (in this case District 15) have the decision authority to do so. I would like to confirm this data point, but nobody has challenged it in the past two weeks.tschoeny wrote:Does Brainard automatically get a birth in Regions as they are hosting?
If so I thought that this was changed a couple of years ago. That way every team had to earn there way in.

Another Way to Look At Pee Wee A Teams Part 4
I'm not following. So Brainard gets an automatic bid to the Regionals since they are a host city? I couldn't agree more that this needs to be looked at since teams will be fighting like crazy for the chance to move on to Regions.
Not fair at all if this is the case........

This is a district issue...nahc wrote:I'm not following. So Brainard gets an automatic bid to the Regionals since they are a host city? I couldn't agree more that this needs to be looked at since teams will be fighting like crazy for the chance to move on to Regions.

...if the associations within the district wish to give one seat to the host, that is the districts right. It then is not unfair to anyone.
I know in D15 and D16 this is how it is done because it ensures a quality tournament and the electing team is usually competitive. Everyone in the district gets a shot at it on a rotating basis.
In the metro area it is difficult to find any individual association to run a region or state tournament.

Elliott70, can this also vary by level of play within a district? For example, D15 can do that for the peewee A, but not necessarily for peewee B.elliott70 wrote:This is a district issue...nahc wrote:I'm not following. In d16 we give them the option to particiapte in districts and earn a spot or take a spot and a guarantee that the parents will be there to work.
We do review the team's ability, but most of the time the association speaks up and declines to host or declines automatic spot if they feel they are not competitive enough.
