Phil Housley
I was a spectator at he WB/Stillwater game the other night. I will not claim that the reffing had any affect on the outcome of the game, but I have never seen a coach have as much affect on penaity calls as much as Housley. Each call on Stillwater required the refs to go to the bench and explain the call to Housley, and at least 3 times the refs listened to Housley's yelling from the bench before calling a penality agianst WB. It appears like the refs line up to kiss his butt. Anybody else notice this?
Re: Phil Housley
Let me tell you, that's what a coach is supposed to do. The refs don't have to allow that. They aren't required to explain anything to the coach. So when you see things like that happening you have to understand the refs need to tell the coach to quiet down. Stillwater isn't going anywhere this year so they should be happy they beat the best team in their conference once. I would be surprised to see Stillwater win even one game in sections...formerlybackofnet wrote:I was a spectator at he WB/Stillwater game the other night. Desperate times cause for desparate measures. I think Phil realizes his program is struggling & critics may be swarmming, so a win against a quality team is vital. The longer he struggles, the more difficult his task becomes. Hill Murray just continues to open the doors for those looking for an alternative to Stillwater hockey.

You've got to be kidding! What was "formerlybackofnet" smoking prior to arriving to the game? The Ponies finally came to play and won that game in spite of the one-sided reffing offered up to the Bears during the majority of the game. There's nothing desperate in Stillwater except for a handful of disgruntled players/parents, who either didn't make the team or feel the need to bash a young team and the coach. At least have the CLASS to give this group of hardworking kids their due-credit when they pull off a huge win when their confidence was waning. If ANY coach failed to question the calls, and particularly the non-calls, they wouldn't have been doing their job.

If you would read my initial sentence, I said the reffing did not have any affect on the game outcome. Stillwater did come to play, and played very well. I was not talking about the team at all, just Housley. He has had this same cry baby attitude since he started at Stillwater. His NHL big boy status lets him intimidate refs and he knows it. This is all I'm reffering to.DPA MacManus wrote:You've got to be kidding! What was "formerlybackofnet" smoking prior to arriving to the game? My comments were in response to anyone suggesting the outcome of the game had ANYTHING to do with the coach intimidating his way to a win. As I pointed out, if anything, the calls (and non-calls) were going against the Ponies. For "formerlybackofthenet" to suggest the refs "line up to kiss his butt", is laughable, particularly when using that game as an example.

I saw a few bad calls. I'm still trying to figure out how you crosscheck a guy with one hand on your stick. What I saw more of was players taking stupid penalties. On both sides. To say that the Ponies got hosed by the refs the first two periods is ridiculous. Seems to me the guys in orange and black were shorthanded most of the 3rd period and most of the overtime. Not because of the refs, because they took dumb penalties.
I heard a lot of whining from the Stillwater side, and the Stillwater bench. For a minute I thought I was at a Woodbury game.

Re: Phil Housley
Perhaps they needed to explain what all those weird hand/arm gyrations they were executing actually meant, to Phil?formerlybackofnet wrote:I was a spectator at he WB/Stillwater game the other night. How were the refs shorthanded?

So formerlybackofthenet were you the classless jerk that yelled for Housley to "Shut up"? Explain why that wasn't a hooking call in the second period on against #28, the WBL kid almost pulled him over backwards. There is a picture of it on www.esp1000.com image 501. The only call Housley really protested was the non checking from behind on WBL in the second period. Yet earlier in the game they gave the STillwater kid 2 and 10 for the same situation. The reffing was bad both ways but the advantage was given to WBL for the first 2 periods.

Lets all agree on this....High School Hockey Refs are enough to pull your hair out on their own. I have been to many games this year and was at the AHA game last night. A d man got called for getting in the way of a player and he never actually touched him. You would think the call would be interference but of course it was a trip!
Usually seems that if a team gets up like WBL did the refs seem to try to even it out. Stillwater was sort handed a lot in the game as well. They had to kill of 5 on 3's just like WBL.
It comes down to how you act on the bench and what messgae that conveys to the players.
Sager is constantly yelling and threw his hands up like he was trying to stop a Tom Brady pass all game. His reactions might have swayed the refs to make calls against him.
Phil at least called the refs over to discuss the calls.
Don't get me wrong there at least 1-2 calls in a game that make the coaches (and fans) want to jump on the ice and yell.
I guess if I had a kid in either program I would want the coach to react as professionally as possible and not scream and yell all the time. There is something to say for a coach who has been through stressful hockey situations before. For this comparison Sager is a suposid Wisconsin player.....was actually a walk on......but he will sell himself as Mike Eaves when you talk about his playing career.
There are plenty of HS coaches selling themself as something they never were as a player. I have more of a problem with a guy like that who yells at his players and the ref constantly. How are you supposed to make a play when the coach is constantly telling you what to do....Pressure, move it, shoot, finish him........makes kids rush things when they have time.

Totally true, I thought he was trying to fly during that game. But it's amazing how the guy that started this thread missed Sager's actions but finds a way to comment about Housley.

If anyone thinks Housley doesn't wield undue influence, then explain how a team that wasn't projected to (didn't) crack into the top 4 spots of their conference gets 2 FSN games in one season and a team appearance on HS Sports Wrap? Not even Edina or Hill has pulled that off, and they've led their conferences, and they actually have t.v. appeal.
