Another way to look at peewee A teams (Feb 4th)

Post by frederick61 »

Feb 4, 2008

The following summarizes the Districts by top teams and what they have done in the last week (Jan 29 to Feb 4) and what they will be doing this week. I have grouped the Districts into the Regions they will be playing to go to state. I have then ranked the top teams in each region. The top two of each region go to state. The projected state peewee A tourney draw is shown at the end of this post.

As a summary, the district championships as of this Monday are as follows:
D1-Mpls Park or Irondale (will be decided Feb 10th.)
D2-Still TBD North St. Paul and White Bear Lake contending
D3-Wayzata
D4-Central Champion is Mankato, East Champion is Faribault
D5-Still TBD Mound Westonka, Buffalo and Sartell contending
D6-Eden Prairie
D8-Eagan
D10-Coon Rapids
D11-Duluth East
D12-Grand Rapids
D15-Little Falls
D16-Roseau

North Region (at Cloquet Feb 29 to March 2): Games this week shook up the North Rankings. Coon Rapids stumbled again losing to Roseville in the New Hope Tourney for the second week in a row. All Coon Rapids has to do is to win one of their two remaining D10 games to clinch a guaranteed seed to the North Region. St. Cloud also fell in D10, but can clinch second in D10 with a win this week. St. Cloud has scheduled a swing through D12 this week. Cloquet won their tourney this week and has continued to play well the past month. They take over the #1 seed in the North this week. Duluth East clinched the D11 regular season title and showed improvement in the White Bear Lake tourney and climbs into contention in the North Region. Grand Rapids fell to a tough team from D6, Chaska, and D15 champion, Little Falls at home. Those loses drop the Thunderhawks off the top 5 this week.
1-Cloquet*
2-Coon Rapids*
3-St. Cloud
4-Duluth East
5-Hermantown

North Region is summarized by districts below.
D10 Summary: Coon Rapids took the week off from D10 play and took consolation title in the New Hope Tourney, getting beat by Roseville in the opener. St. Cloud lost a one league game this week to just about end their chances to catch Coon Rapids, the best they can to now is to win their last game and force Coon Rapids to win one of their remaining two league games. However that win by St. Cloud will clinch second place for them. The D10 playoffs open on Feb 17th at the Andover Community Center.
D10-#1-Coon Rapids (Last week: took consolation in the New Hope Tourney lost to Roseville 3-2 in the opener, beat Sartell 5-2 and New Prague 4-0. Coming week: play Champlin Park and Rogers to conclude their D10 schedule).
D10-#2-St. Cloud (Last week: beat SFNB 5-3 and lost to Champlin Park 4-3; Coming week: play Andover in final D10 game and make a swing through D12 playing Grand Rapids, Moorhead, Eveleth, Virginia and Hibbing)
D10-#2-Elk River (Last week: beat Andover 5-1, beat Anoka 3-2, played SF/NB and beat Blaine 3-1; Coming week: play Sauk Rapids, Cambridge/Isanti to end their D10 season and play in the Warroad Tourney)
D11 Summary: The D11 league season will complete this week, but the standings and district draw are unlikely to change. The D11 playoffs will be a 4 team double elimination tourney and most likely open with #1 Duluth East playing #4 Duluth Lakers followed by #2 Cloquet playing #3 Hermantown. In the White Bear Tourney, Duluth East fared well while Cloquet won their own tourney beating North St Paul in the finals.
D11-#1-Cloquet (Last week; won their own tourney, beating Buffalo, either Hopkins or Thunder Bay and North St. Paul 5-3; Coming week: play Hermantown and Moorhead)
D11-#2-Duluth East (Last week: beat Hermantown 1-0 to clinch D11 regular season title, played in the White Bear Lake Tourney, beat White Bear 4-1, lost to Eden Prairie 5-3 and lost to Edina 5-2; Coming week: play Superior in final league game)
D11-#3-Hermantown (Last week: lost to Duluth East 1-0; Coming week: play Cloquet, play in Superior Wisconsin Tourney, draw Eau Claire and Forest Lake.)

D12 Summary: No change. Grand Rapids remains unchallenged in this district. Chaska and Little Falls made a swing through D12 this weekend and beat them all. Grand Rapids looks to be struggling, but will have another opportunity this week to break out when St. Cloud and EGF come to town.
D12-#1-Grand Rapids (last week: lost to Chaska 3-1 and lost to Little Falls 3-1; Coming week: play St. Cloud and EGF)
D12-#2-Virginia (Last week: play Duluth Lakers, lost to Chaska 3-2 and lost to Little Falls 8-1)
D12-#3-Hibbing (Last week: lost to Chaska 9-1; Coming week: play Moorhead and St. Cloud).

East Region (at St. Louis Park Feb 29 to March 2): This will be the toughest region regardless of which teams come out of their respective districts. Woodbury and Wayzata remain on top, but Eagan is playing well, winning the Alexandria Tourney. They deserve to move up to number 3 in the region, but they have to win the tough D8 Playoffs to advance including beating Lakeville South. North St. Paul played well in Cloquet tourney, taking second and deserve to be in the top five along with Maple Grove who stayed by virtue of beating a tough Minnetonka team this week. Lakeville South has had two weeks of struggling when playing scrimmages and tourneys outside of D8. They are unbeaten in D8 with two games to go and play Woodbury this week, but they drop out of the five this week along with Roseville. Roseville had a nice win over Coon Rapids in the New Hope tourney opener, but lost to Eastview in the championship, a good D6 team that had an up and down season and is out of the D6 playoffs this year.
1-Woodbury*
2-Wayzata*
3-Eagan
4-North St. Paul
5-Maple Grove

East Region is summarized by districts below.
D8 Summary: The D8 seeds and playoffs are set. The wild card games that open the twelve team tourney will be played Feb 17th at Hastings. Play in games are to be played next week. Drawing a bye in the first round of the tourney are Woodbury, Lakeville North, Eagan and Lakeville South. There will be three play in games, Farmington plays Northfield, South St. Paul plays Winona, and Cottage Grove plays Rochester 1. Congratulations to Eagan for wining the D8 regular season title. The winner of the Woodbury/Lakeville South game on Tuesday will most likely take second. The loser will end up in third place.
D8 #1-Woodbury (This week: beat Sibley 6-2, played Tartan and Burnsville; Coming week: play Lakeville South)
D8-#2-Lakeville South (This week: played in White Bear Lake Tourney, lost to Eden Prairie 3-2, lost to White Bear Lake 7-2 and beat Rochester Red 4-3; Coming week: close out D8 play at Woodbury and at Hudson. Two wins would leave them with an unbeaten D8 record of 12-0-4 and until beaten in second place in this ranking)
D8-#2-Eagan (Last week: won the Alexandria Tourney by beating Mankato 6-1, Alexandria 8-0 and Rosemount 6-3; Coming week: make a trip through D6 playing Chaska, Edina and Burnsville).

D3 Summary: Unchanged. Wayzata is the D3 regular season title holder this year. They hold a one game lead with one game to play and hold the tie breaker over Maple Grove. They took second in the White Bear Lake Tourney this week. Maple Grove beat a good Minnetonka team this week soundly and may have turned a corner after struggling the past two weeks. They play Hopkins this week and that game result maybe an indication of how the #2 and #3 regional seeds could be come playoff time in two weeks.
D3-#1-Wayzata (Last week: played in White Beat Lake Tourney beat Rochester Red 6-1, beat Edina 4-3 and lost to Eden Prairie 2-1 to take second; Coming week: play Orono in last D3 regular season game)
D3-#2-Maple Grove (Last week: beat Minnetonka 6-1; Coming week: play Hopkins in last D3 league game)
D3-#3-Hopkins (Last week: played Como, beat North Metro 3-0 and tied Eastview 1-1 and played in Cloquet tourney opened with Thunder Bay; Coming week: play Maple Grove and Armstrong to close out league play)

D2 (Playoffs Feb 15 to Feb 24). D2 Summary: NSP and Roseville both took seconds this week, NSP at Cloquet and Roseville at New Hope. The District regular season winds down this week with a key match up between NSP and White Bear Lake. White Bear had a tough tourney and played Centennial for the consolation after losing to Duluth East and beating Lakeville South. Only Roseville has a chance now of catching these two for the title if they fall.
D2-#1-North St Paul (Last week: took second in Cloquet tourney beating Cambridge/Isanti 5-0 and Hasting 8-3 before losing to Cloquet 5-3; Coming week: play White Bear Lake in key D2 regular season ending game at Polar)
D2-#2-Roseville (Last week: beat Irondale 6-3 and took second in New Hope Tourney, beat Coon Rapids 3-2, beat Armstrong 6-1 and lost to Eastview 5-3 in the championship game.)
D2-#3-Moundsville (Last week: lost to Mahtomedi 3-1; Coming week: play Tartan and Roseville in last two D2 regular season games.)

South Region (at Chaska Feb 29 to March 2): Eden Prairie had a great week last week. They beat Edina in the last league game on Sunday to win the D6 regular season championship and followed it up by winning the White Bear Lake Tourney this past Sunday. On the eighth day, Eden Prairie rested. This week they appear to be idle. Edina finishes third at White Bear and tunes up for the D6 playoffs by scrimmaging Eagan. South Region looks to still be the domain of the three D6 fighting for the two seed. Faribault and New Prague are working hard to make their presence known at the South Region. Mpls Park struggled at Cloquet and dropped out of the top 5.
1-Eden Prairie*
2-Edina*
3-Apple Valley
4-Faribault
5-New Prague

South Region is summarized by districts below.
D6-Summary: The D6 playoff seeds are official. They are as follows: #1-Eden Praire, #2-Edina, #3-Chaska, #4-Apple Valley, #5-Burnsville, #6-TBD with #6-Minnetonka, #7-Jefferson, and #8-Prior Lake playing for the #6 seed in a single elimination playin games to a six team double elimination tourney. The double elimination tourney will be #4-Apple Valley plays the #6 Seed with the winner playing #1-Eden Prairie. The #3-Chaska plays #5-Burnsville with the winner playing #2-Edina. The playin starts this week, Saturday , Feb 9th. Once the D6 playoffs start, they play on consecutive days until a champion is crowned on the following Saturday, Feb 16th.
D6-#1-Eden Prairie (Last week: won White Bear Lake Tourney beating Lakeville South 3-2, Duluth East 5-3 and Wayzata 2-1; Coming week: idle?)
D6-#2-Edina (Last week: play in White Bear Lake Tourney beat Centennial 3-0, lost to Wayzata 4-3 and beat Duluth East 5-2 for third place; Coming week: play Eagan)
D6-#3-Apple Valley (Last week: beat Kennedy; Coming week: play Faribault)

D4 Summary: D4 playoff seeds and draw are in. The lower four seeds, Marshall and Redwood Falls will play for the #7 seed. Austin and New Ulm will play for the #8 seed. The District playoffs are an eight team bracket tourney with single elimination in the quarter finals. The semifinals become a double elimination for the two D4 regional seeds. The seeds are as follows: #1-Faribault, #2-Mankato, #3-Luverne, #4-New Prague, #5-Albert Lea, #6-Owatonna, #7-TBD, and #8-TBD. District 4 playoffs began on Feb. 15 at St. Peter/LeSeur.
D4-#1-Faribault (Last week: beat Farmington 9-2 and Rochester Black 4-1; Coming week: play Hastings, Apple Valley and Sibley)
D4-#2-New Prague (Last week: Beat Mankato 4-1 and played in New Hope Tourney, lost to Eastview 5-0, beat Shakopee and lost to Coon Rapids 4-0 in consolation finals; Coming week: play Rosemount)

D1 Summary: Mpls Park has one game to play, but will have to win or tie Highland to take the title. They have been an up and down team. But these three teams are the likely order of finish in D1.
D1-#1-Mpls Park (Last week: played in Cloquet Tourney, lost to Hastings in opener, played Cambridge/Isanti, and Buffalo, Thunder Bay or Hopkins in the third game; Coming week: play Highland in last league game that can determine the D1 regular season championship).
D1-#2-Irondale (Last week: lost to Roseville; Coming week: play St. Paul Johnson and Northfield)
D1-#3-Highland (Last week: beat St. Paul Johnson 5-1; Coming week: play Washburn and Mpls Park to end D1 regular season play)

West Region(at Brainerd Feb 29 to March 2): Little Falls beat the top three teams in D12 last week at their house. Now they are going to Warroad's home and could end up playing Roseau in a preview of the West Region tourney. D5 teams have struggled lately. Mound Westonka has been quiet since their 3rd place finish at Bemidji a month ago. Since then, both TRF and EGF have played an aggressive schedule and deserved to be moved up.
1-Roseau*
2-Little Falls*
3-TRF
4-EGF
5-Mound Westonka

West Region is summarized by districts below.
D5 (Playoffs Feb 17 to Feb 24). D5 summary: Mound Westonka plays Sartell and Buffalo this week to decide the D5 regular season championship and a guaranteed seed to the West Region. Buffalo and Sartell are also staying near home to finish off the regular season schedule.
D5-#1-Mound Westonka (Last week: play Orono; Coming week: play three league games Buffalo, Sartell, and Hutchinson.)
D5-#2-Buffalo (Last week: play in Cloquet Tourney and lost to Cloquet in opener; Coming week: play Mound Westonka and St. Michaels).
D5-#2-Sartell (Last week: play in New Hope Tourney lost to Armstrong 4-2, Coon Rapids 5-2 and played Shakopee; Coming week: play Litchfield, River Lakes, Mound Westonka and Willmar.)

D15 summary: The D15 playoffs are double elimination with the top two teams in the league getting a first round bye. As the champion, Little Falls has the #1 seed. Fergus Falls is in the driver’s seat to get the #2 seed. These teams would have to stumble in order for Moorhead to catch them. Little Falls took on the D12 teams in a trip to the range and beat them all. Fergus Falls took second in their own tourney and have a number of visitors this week that should prove interesting. No change here for this week except to note that D15 stock is up this week because of the play of the two Falls teams. Little Falls will carry the D15 flag the Warroad Tourney this week.
D15-#1-Little Falls (This week: beat Grand Rapids 3-1, beat Virginia 8-0 and Hibbing 9-1; Coming week: play in Warroad Tourney, draw Kenora in opener, could play Elk River in the second game if they win and possibly Roseau)
D15-#2-Fergus Falls (This week: took second in their own tourney beating Willmar and Fargo Raiders 5-4 before losing to Andover 5-4; Coming week: play Alexandria, Little Falls, Grand Forks White Knights and Crookston)
D15-#3-Brainerd (because they are the host)

D16 Summary: Roseau played a couple of games outside of D16 this week and won. The Rams have now strung a six game win streak together and could end up playing some good teams in the Warroad Tourney on the weekend. EGF has strung league victories together and now are lodged in second. Nobody can over take them. However, TRF can be over taken by Crookston. Still, TRF holds that Roseau Tourney win over Elk Rivers who just won the White Bear Lake tourney. The Warroad Tourney is played this weekend with Roseau, LOW and Warroad representing D16 in the 10 team tourney. Little Falls, #1 in D15, will be there. Also playing are two D10 teams, Elk River and Centennial, and D2 bottom dweller, Mahtomedi, who is just coming off an upset win over Moundsview (at least it’s not a tie game-Moundsview has seven tie games in D2 play-a 14 game league schedule). It should be a good tourney.
D16-#1-Roseau (Last week: beat Moorhead 6-2 and beat International Falls 11-1; Coming week: play LOW in D16 and play in the Warroad Tourney, draw LOW in the opener, could play Centennial in the second game and Elk River or Little Falls in the third.)
D16-#2-East Grand Forks (Last week: beat Moorhead 4-3 and beat LOW 6-1; Coming week: play Hallock, Grand Rapids and Bemidji).
D16-#3-TRF (Last week: played Moorhead; Coming week: play Grand Forks and Bemidji)

Projected State Tourney Team draw, W1 versus S2, N1 versus E2, S1 versus West 2 and E1 versus N2
Roseau vs Edina
Cloquet vs Wayzata (Cloquet takes over the top in the North Region)
Eden Prairie vs Little Falls
Woodbury vs Coon Rapids (Which is worst, finishing first in the North Region and drawing Wayzata or finishing second and drawing Woodbury?)

They are unbeaten in D8 with two games to go and play Woodbury this week, but they drop out of the five this week along with Roseville. There will be three play in games, Farmington plays Northfield, South St. Paul plays Winona, and Cottage Grove plays Rochester 1. Congratulations to Eagan for wining the D8 regular season title.

Is it possible that Edina and E.P. both don't make it to regions (chaska, burnsville,av,tonka).

Yes it's possible. I don't think that would happen, that niether of them don't make it - cause the send the Top 3. But it's possible.

Yeah your right maybe not both but E.P. is the team I think will have the best chance not to make it to regions. Edina,AV and Burnsville are who think will make it.

The D6 sets up the playoff draw so they reward the top two teams in regular season with a bye in the double elimination tourney. The way to look at a tourney format like this is not by loses, but by wining the second round game. The top two teams earn a spot automatically in that game by finishing first or second. They only have to win that one game to advance to the regions. The losers of that second game have to win their next two games to gain a seed this year.

Eden Prairie has had up and down season. They are playing well this week, but lost to Thief River Falls at Roseau two weeks ago. Thief River Falls has struggled this year in D16. Edina has lost also. The past 30 days, their record is 8-6. One can argue that they play tough competition, but three of those wins have been over Prior Lake, Kennedy, and Shakopee.

Anything can happen in D6 this year, that is why they play the game.

Another Way to Look At Pee Wee A Teams Part 4

Post by nahc »

Edina and Edin Prarie will both make the Regionals. Apple Valley and Burnsville will vie for the 3rd team from the Region. Neither AP nor Burnsville can beat Edina or EP in the Districts or Regions if they meet there.

I'm willing to bet that AV will beat E.P. in either the District or Region, Burnsville's Goalie can shut down any team (EP-1 BV-1, EP-2 BV-1ot, EDINA-3 BV-2) and don't forget about Chaska. So my point is that EP and Edina have to watch out. Gotta Love Playoff Season! its gonna be a meatgrinder.
