Alaska State Championships streamed online tonight

Post by TheHockeyDJ »

If you want to check out HS hockey in another state here is the link for the two state title games in Alaska. 8:00 Alaska Time, or 11:00 Minnesota time is the big school championship with 2 Anchorage schools, Service and South. Watch and then comment on how you think it compares to Minnesota. #7 for South is Robb Haider and he was drafted by St.Louis of the NAHL but turned it down to state in AK.

Let's hear your comments after the game.

I'm curious, is the sun rising again?

We always have sun in Anchorage. Right now it's 8AM-6PM roughly. You're thinking of Barrow. They just get a twilight glow for 30 minutes on their shortest days and then it goes to black again. On a typical winter day it can be 40 in Juneau, 30 in Anchorage, and -60 in Barrow, so if someone asked what the weather is like in Alaska, it's like asking what's the weather like in the United States.

Yeah, you watched the small schools, they are REALLY bad. They'll have more people tonight, but it's still nothing like Minnesota ofcourse.

I'll be tuning in and looking forward to see what their product is.

A friend of mine worked with the goalies for an Anchorage team a few years back.

Do they play this at Sullivan?

No, it's at an arena in Wasilla, which is like a 50 minute drive north of Anchorage. It's 50 minutes because you have to drive around and ocean inlet. Witha bridge it would be 15 minutes. I would have gone if it was in Anchorage, or if it wasn't Hockey Day Minnesota today. Watching the Gophers right now, ugh, what a long season it's been for them.

BTW, I posted this link because I know I'm not a GREAT hockey mind. So I'm hoping maybe some more knowledgable fans or coaches can watch this and make a comparison to the Minnesota game. To me, the Minnesota kids play much harder and faster. #7 for South looks really good, but I wonder how good he'd be thrown into a Roseau/Edina game.

I can only hope that if you find something substantial to show why Minnesota hockey is so much better than Alaska hockey, you post it in that bozo's UAA blogspot and remind him of what a lower life form he is. Image

Oh, and tell him in the meantime what you think of his college's "team".

I know, geez that guy is a loser. Worst blog in college hockey. The foul language he uses, it's pathetic. I haven't seen that in any other college hockey blogs that are frequented. I watched the MSU/UAA game on cable up here and laughed every time the Mavs scores, thinking of that jerk. Atleast their radio announcer, Kurt Haider is a good guy. He's a gentleman. The uaablogger is the exact opposite of a gentleman.

LOL!!! That is an awesome place. Very fun to go there after fishing and drink a few Alaskan Ambers. That's the only building on the Homer Spit (peninsula) that survived the tsunami from the earthquake in '65 I think it was. 2 years ago on the Homer spit they built an indoor hockey arena. The first one in Homer. I think their url is homericerink.com.

If you ever saw that guy post on US college hockey online's message board, you wouldn't be shocked at his blog's commentary. The guy got banned off of USCHO for a reason and it wasn't because he is real witty or intelligent.

He can always hang his hat on that idiotic "per capita" argument when comparing Alaska hockey to Minnesota hockey.... then the rest of the world will laugh at him. :D

Any comments on the game play so far? I think a team like Hill or Roseau would beat one of these by 12 atleast.

They wouldn't beat these two teams by that much.

I've seen the ND, IL, and IN state tournaments, I haven't seen Wisconsin's but I know very well what Superior has and they've won a bundle of 'em.

The first thing I noticed is the skating ability of these players is pretty good. Neither team is very physical but it looks like an Olympic sheet so everyone is pretty spread out. The tempo of play is pretty good so I believe they could get up and down the ice with anyone.

What were IL and IN like?

The one thing I notice is these teams don't make the puck dance like Minnesota teams. Very rarely do they complete more than 2 passes in a row cleanly.

Neither IL or IN are high school league sponsored sports. It's basically high school aged playing youth hockey. In some cases kids may play for a high school they don't even attend.

IL high school hockey is much better than most Minnesotans would want to hear. Affluent suburbs on the west and north side of Chicago have some pretty good hockey. There are a handful of private schools in Chicago that are very good as well.

IN has pockets of hockey in South Bend, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. There are a couple suburbs on the northside of Indy that have some very respectable teams.

I wish there was more interstate hockey games. I would like to see some schools from IL and MI come to MN. I know Holy Angels and Hill played some teams from out East and won 2 and tied another. Though I get tired of it always being private schools. I'd like to see Trenton High from Michigan or some of the Alaska schools play Grand Rapids, CEC, Duluth East, or Roseau.

This year a team from Dallas scrimmaged Hallock, EGF, Crookston, and TRF over Xmas.

Next year, I believe at least two teams from Dallas will be going up to TRF to play in their Xmas tournament.
