Bemidji moving down??

Post by outstater »

Hi, anyone know how come Bemidji High moved down to class A? or why? Seems to me that take a spot away from the really small school with a hockey program that has trouble competing in the sectional playoffs.

They didn't move down, they just chose not to opt up for the two year cycle. 8)

the reason they moved down was because the coach that just resigned wanted to move down to class A because he wanted more history in bemidji but obviously that didnt happen

Ok, thanks, yes I know its old news but nobody I have asked around here had the real answer. So, now can you tell me what the enrollment cutoff is? I think the MSHSL says 1250 is that right? I think also some old research I did had Bemidji at 1200 or so in 9 to 12.

Based on the school enrollment below from the MN State High School League.

Alexandria and then Bemidji would be the next two “AA” schools EXCEPT Co-op’s or schools option ups?

Fictitiously, If Roseau would decide to play single “A”, then Alexandria would move up and Bemidji would be on the bubble or does it only happen every two years?

School ------------------------ Enrollment
Buffalo High School---- 8AA --------------------1596
Owatonna High School --- 1AA------------------1528

Here's how it works the top 64 teams in enrollment play AA and the rest A

http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/news/method07-09.htm
http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/enrollments07.asp?sort=2

Without going into all the co-ops as I suppose that changes the order of some, but stand alone this is where they are at.
I only listed +/-10 from the 64 spot.

Richfield is # 64

Cambridge-Isanti High School 1403
Rochester John Marshall 1366
Cretin-Derham Hall High School 1319
Alexandria High School 1278
Bemidji High School 1255
Saint Louis Park High School 1246
Winona High School 1226
Northfield High School 1223
Duluth East High School 1222
Richfield High School 1218 ---------------#64
Saint Paul Johnson High School 1186
Saint Paul Arlington High School 1178
Saint Cloud Apollo High School 1165
Spring Lake Park High School 1155
Saint Michael-Albertville H.S. 1148
Saint Paul Highland Park 1137
Sauk Rapids-Rice High School 1128
Simley High School 1125
Willmar High School 1119
Mahtomedi High School 1109

CNT,
That is where I retrieved what I had for placement.

I was only trying to show that every one above Alexandria and Bemidji is already a “AA” Hockey program. So I was wondering with a step down or a school shutting down a program due to budget restraints would Alexandria be the NEXT one?

I was wondering how they could opt down? unless the co-ops that are not combined on that list bring them under the # :?

We are some what on the same page.

Are these two next to go “AA” if an opening (with-in the 64) happens above them? Not counting merging a program (towns) that would automatically jump ahead because of the combined school size.

I think we'd have to go thru and get all the co-ops together, and then that # is probably over the 1255 mark, I don't have the ambition to put all that together though...at least today

Co-op enrollments made John Marshall the 64th largest school

The 7 co-ops that are AA that otherwise wouldn't be:

1AA
Dodge County:
Kasson Mantorville 550
Triton 305
Hayfield 259
Byron 462

Winona:
Winona High 1226
Winona Cotter 314
St. Charles 297
Wabasha/Kellogg 231

5AA
Rogers:
Rogers 996
Zimmerman 552
Marantha 194

8AA
Becker:
Becker 695
Big Lake 857
Milaca 604

Monticello:
Monticello 1080
Maple Lake 275
Annandale 596

Northern Lakes:
Aitkin 373
Crosby/Ironton 357
Northland 149
Pequat Lakes 455
Pine River 257

River Lakes:
Albany 473
Eden Valley 243
New London 520
Rocori 801
Paynesville 339
St. Johns 250

Some other co-ops have schools in them that are larger than the host school would be an A school, i.e. Como Park's enrollment is 1040 which is A level but they are co-oped with AA an school like Central (enrollment 1650).

The MSHSL will redo the sections again after next winter and given the demographics there will be more changes. Some schools may opt up, some that opt up now may not.
