This format certainly has its merits. It pretty much guarantees the best teams in the tourney and is probably most likely to produce the best games as it progresses.

The issues I see are that it squeezes out small schools and eliminates the current system of having a representative from just about every part of the state. You can argue about whether that's a good thing or not.

The biggest issue I see is the seeding of teams 1-64, though. That would create a ton of controversy, and unless the MSHSL gives Lee a nice contract for PS2, they'll have to develop some sort of BCS-like system of coming up with rankings.

And as with any state tourney idea, there's the logistical issue. This version could match Roseau and Warroad against Mankato West and Rochester Century in the first round, which would be a bit of a mess. It depends how much of it is played at home sites and how much is in St. Paul. Either way will probably lead to a lot of school being missed, and that might not go over to well with the MSHSL. It's worth a good discussion, though.

i agree

i was thinking do it like the ncaa basket ball have 1,8,9,16 all go to one site to play the games then go back, etc.

they could then do maybe a NIT or something?

If something is to be changed this is the only thing that should be done.

Stay with two classes. Set up a playoff system, every team gets in, and the playoffs are still separated by class. Set up all the seedings, and play out until the final 8, then do the state tournament like usual. This would ensure that only the best teams make it.

Exactly right thats why I like this idea so much because we would get the top 8 teams at state

you could play like this

week of 2/21
friday
1/16, 8/9, 5/12, 4/13, 3/14, 6/11, 7/10, 2/15
saturday
winners
week of 2/28
friday
half games
saturday
half games

then you have your 8 state teams

so this way would take one week, the way now takes 13 days

We essentially do that. What do you think sections are but regionals? The only difference is in the above system it has one class. Which is what we did back prior to 1992. And that one included everybody. That's why I like the big spreadsheet that shows each section one of our posters do every year. It shows the sheer size of the tournament...

Yeah but rank the teams from 1-64 in both classes, not just 1-8 in sections. Actually, I like the system we have now.

All right, now everyone who made a tourney has to pick the winners.

I think its a nobel idea but it will never happen and if it did, no doubt there would be a lot of complaining.

That away Pondy--this is what I mentioned on a thread early. The top 64 teams reguarless of Class--I think you should try to regionalize it a bit more (less travel) but look at some of those match-ups they are great !
They could have a "selection" show just like NCAA hoops to announce the brackets---reactions of teams--explainations of who went where and why-- a ton of discussions --fun stuff ! Somebody pass this on to Big Dave Stead and the MSHSL !

This would be great!!! The tournament has to get back to just one class...

That bracket could have great match-ups in the state semis.

STA vs. Edina
&
White Bear vs. Hill

We would see if the Cadets could hang with the big schools. There would of been tons of storylines in that game this year with Lee transfering...
Then follow it up with a White Bear-Hill game. Imagine the atmosphere at the Xcel with these two teams at state. I would love to see this match-up played out at the state tourney.

Assuming that the regional championships would be the state quarterfinals, there would be lots of other possible interesting match-ups.

BSM vs. STA
Hill vs. Warroad or Hill vs. Burnsville
White Bear vs. Roseau or White Bear vs. Moorhead

I think this is a really great idea and would make for some outstanding games.

The only thing i wouldn't like about it is the actual respect and amount of work it takes to make the tournament.

besides where are they going to house a banquet for 64 teams?

You wouldn't hold a banquet for all 64. Just the 8 that play at the X. Pretty much like now. As far as dates go. They can't play through March. They need to be done when they are or the next week for spring sports.

NO keep two classes. If it's not broke, don't fix it.
