WILLMAR GIRLS HOCKEY

Post by finance_gal »

What is everyones opinion of Willmars girls team next year, I seen them last night at a showcase game and those girls were flying. I am in no way associated with the girls, their team or their city but they tied a very good Blaine team and they were skating at State tournament pace...I was very impressed. Whats everyones opinion?

For the record it's Willmar, with an "a". I'm glad to hear that they are working hard in the off season. They could be very good competition next year in our Conference.

Thanks, I gues it's obvious that I have nothing to do with their program then....

Willmar's record last year was not very good in the CLC but they looked to be a team that was younger, displayed some nice speed but had some trouble with consistent effort at least in the couple games I saw them play. Working hard in the off season as a team, I think, will really pay off for them.

According to the MSHSL website:
High School Head Coach, Rick Dahle
Assistant Coaches, Lee Wierschem, Veronica Collins

No idea who is coaching them at Showcase.

I'm not sure who's coaching them it was a guy and a young girl, I only seen the third period of the game (ours was right after theres) but you should have heard their coaches going on afterwords about "getting better" and "to be the best they have to play with the best" if that team can keep up the intensity they will be a force in their conference.

If it's like Boys the MN HS coaches can coach up to the last day in July.
After that it's no organized involment with the players until starting day, with the exception of preseason team orientation.
At least that's how I understand it! :D

You're only partially right. They can coach up until the last day of July, but they also cannot coach until sometime in June. I think it's a six or eight-week window in the summer when they are allowed to coach their players.

This must mean coaching your players as a TEAM, because there are high school coaches that are coaching SOME of their players for the NDP Phase 1 and 2 tryouts.

But I believe the 6-8 week window you mention is mainly intended to allow the coaches to run their STP summer programs, and make a little extra money doing it.

June 1 through July 31 is the time frame I have always heard. And they simply make exceptions for the NDP process, is also what I have always heard. I have to ask though, is the best process to have the HS coaches evaluate the process? Seems there would be no way to be non-bias?

I was kind of wondering the same thing at first simply because I was not sure what to expect.
but after watching the process and seeing some of the names on the lists
I believe they are doing their best to get the best kids.
Also I do not belive any coach wants to have that stigma put on them of not putting through the best,
it could make them look bad and their reputations would be at stake.
I would not want to be the one making the choices there are some very good players out there.

The Willmar girls are for real, Our team was undefeated and we just had our heads handed to us by this group. I talked to their coach after the game and he tells me all the girls are sophomores with a 14 year old goalie, the team is a composite of Willmar, Forest Lake, Minnetonka, Osseo, Hill and Edina. This team is very good and very physical. they could play with any team we seen in the High School season and we played in a good section 4AA. Congratulations on a great win girls.

Sounds like a composite team, no disrespect to Willmar, but those other players come from very good programs...

It's good to have programs such as Willmar experience some success, it only evolves more success in the youth program with the excitement it develops and the younger players wanting to find that same success as experienced by those before them...
