Duluth Marshall Tournament
When is their annual summer tournament at MARS?
Is it this weekend or next and who is in it this year?

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe that tournament took place last weekend.retiredduluthguy wrote:When is their annual summer tournament at MARS?

More info
Boblee please give us a little more info n this game. I can't ever make this weekends games because of a skating competition at the arena. I know it is only summer hockey, but I always like to know how my STARS are looking.
Thanks for all the info.

Re: More info
most definitely, boblee deserves it, so high on his rapids teams each year...is Danny M. here playing, that would probably be the reason GR is getting killed..remember what they said about GR having the BEST defense in section 7AA next year??!!Neutron 14 wrote:You want him to pour salt into his OWN wound?Zamman wrote:Boblee please give us a little more info n this game. In boblee's defense there is nothing wrong with being supportive of your team. I am with the STARS. Remeber that this is a learning session of hockey, the outcome is nothing more than a little bragging rights. I would have loved to go and watch some hockey, instead I am here at the rink watching figure skating....

Holy Angels 7
Grand Rapids 3
Final
Grand Rapids was without plenty of will-be regulars, but a lot of the guys played well. The more experienced defensemen like Rendle, Horsemann, and Merritt actually played rather well. Very few contributing forwards made the trip to Duluth. AHA looked pretty good. It looked like a lot of their top players were there. Mattson was good, Webb actually was decent in goal. Holy Angels will have a nice team. Grand Rapids wasn't great today, but wasn't too bad either.
ColdandMoronic,
Look at the posts I made about the Grand Rapids defense. I said that they have a lot of learning to do quickly if they want to be amongst the best. And as far as supporting my team. I always have and always will. Also, I was very realistic last year, but you can't see that because you like to throw my words back at me rather than read into what I have to say.

And you're not high on East every year? How has East done the last few years in the playoffs... Hmmmm.rapidsrapids wrote:And you're not high on East every year? Lowdown on the tourney. AHA brought EVERYONE and then some. Their roster listed 29 players. Obviously they didn't dress them all per game, but they had AHA guys as well as players from the "south side" as their team was called the South Side Stars. BSM wasn't stacked, but they were skilled bringing more than their share of returning varstity guys. Their team is a consistent bunch of behind the play hacks though. Many cheap shots delivered behind the plays. Well schooled in the art of deceptive cheapness.(AKA subtle foot sweeps, last second butt ends, and the art of the high hit to the head) Not knowing much about St. Cloud, they seemed to have many of their returning guys and played like a decent team. IF the roster was correct, I saw Schmidt play for the first time and was left wondering what all the hype was all about. Lazy and not a good skater was what I witnessed. Andover was a surprise to me and looked very good. Marshall seemed to dress a lot of returning guys and played well. Bemidji was scrappy and will be a tough team come next season. Warroad didn't bring anything new to the table. Same old tough, scrappy lunch bucket crew. Hebel is starting to develop more and may actually end up being the player he was predicted to be. GR was a tough read even for me. They brought mostly untested new guys or JV guys from last year. Dressed 6(I think)last year's bantams, 1 full time varsity guy, 1 varsity goalie, 1 who was on JG last year. The others from last year's varsity had roughly a combined 10 games of experience. At the beginning, the bantam guys had a deer in the headlight look, by the end, they were becoming more aware and were starting to make plays. Green was probably the one who came the farthest during the weekend.
The GR goalies played well for the most part allowing only a few softies throughout the weekend. The play of the games was typical summer hockey, and apparently the reffing was as well. Perhaps they used new guys trying to break them in, but several games got a tad out of hand. They weren't consistent at all which only added to the frustration of the players. All in all, it was just another chance for new guys to get experience, vets to get in some work, and tweeners to get a better feel.
The only real disappointment was having to pay the cover charge at the Marshall gate.
Never been soaked like that for a summer high school tourney. GR hosts and doesn't charge for boys or girls. Was a little odd to hit people up for $$ for that. Also, was a bit of a strange draw, especially for GR,(suppose it would have been for AHA had they lost the first 2)3 games within 24 hours. Not exactly ideal at a higher level of play.
My outlook of the teams that participated :
AHA - will once again be one of the teams to be dealt with at the AA level.
BSM - Ditto
SCC - Should compete once again for a spot in the A state tourney
Bemidji - Will prove to be competitve in their section.
Andover - Will turn some heads in 7AA
Marshall - Will once again be favored, but will be over rated
Warroad - Probably a team that will win their section - Hebel may be for real.
GR - Still should be considered one of the top two teams in 7AA. Plug in the missing players, i.e. Skrbec, Kleinendorst, Pallki, Dick, Moore & How, GR fares much better.
SUMMER HOCKEY, gotta love it.

They all had ups and downs. Horseman was better than I saw all last year(played tough, smart, heads up hockey most of the weekend)Rendle was more up than down, but you can see how good he'll be(he made some unreal plays) Merritt was good at times showing more of a physical side than he has in the past(which he needs to do to be successful)Glorvigen played his position well at times and showed some skills that will be useful to this team in the next 3 years, Swentkofske seemed to be a player more adept at playing forward, but made several nice plays. Throw Kleinendorst and Dick into the mix, along with the first 3, you've got a solid D core. The GR D, provided they play within their means, will be as good as it gets. ALL of them have something to offer.7A22A wrote:Nice win for the Toppers. I've seen the GR comments, but any other word on how they looked? Blueline?MARSHALLS wrote:Final in champ:

Like I said before, GR brought a very young team to this tourny, and as frustrating as some of it was, you can see the skills that these players have. While many that played this weekend will most likely spend this season at the JV level, GR hockey has reason to be excited about the future. Lots of skill, not a lot of experience, youthful exuberence and a willingness to learn.
