Early Peewee A tourneys and Centennial Preview

Post by frederick61 »

The first spurt of Peewee A tourneys are about to happen. For those interested, here are three early tourneys of to take a look at although the Centennial Jamboree is not really a tourney.

Spring Lake Park has decided to field a peewee A team and has scheduled a home tourney (at Fogerty) on November 14-16. The Panthers (D10) will open their foray into Peewee A against North Metro (D3). In the second game in the 8 team upper bracket tourney pits Highland (D1) against Mahtomedi (D2). In the lower bracket, Kennedy (D6) takes on Armstrong (D3). In the final game of the night, Cottage Grove (D8) plays Buffalo (D5).

Spring Lake Park has always fielded a tough B1 team and last year was no different. They finished 5th in D10 (11-5 record) regular season and made the playoffs, losing in overtime to Anoka and to Elk River (2-0). North Metro got tougher as the season wore on last year and should be tough this year.

Kennedy and Cottage Grove should be interesting teams to watch in the lower bracket. With Cottage Grove being the East Regional host this year and having a potentially good team returning, this tourney will be their first real test. Kennedy has one of the smallest teams when it comes to numbers (10), but has size, skate well and have a good defense. With the Panthers are also having a skills competition for players on Saturday, this tourney should be a good tourney.

The Hall of Fame tourney returns also to Blaine on October 31 and November 1-2, with a tourney that will preview D10 teams this year with 7 D10 teams entered including Blaine. The lone outsider is Mpls Park (D1). This year the HOF goes with a standard 8 team bracket format.

Although Blaine has been overlooked in preseason talk, but they maybe the best team in D10 with 9 returning peewee A players from last year’s team (including both goalies). Last year’s team placed fourth in regular season D10 among 12 teams. In the playoffs, they beat Anoka and lost to Coon Rapids and Centennial to end their season. Blaine plays Mpls Park on Friday in what should be an interesting game and test for both teams.

The Centennial Preview and the HOF tourneys overlap, but both events are within ten minutes drive of each other. The Preview schedule is below.

Centennial Preview
Thursday Oct 30th (@Super Rink 2)
6:30 PM -- Edina Vs. Cottage Grove
8:10 PM -- Eden Prairie Vs. Osseo/Maple Grove

Friday Oct 31st (@Super Rink 3)
6:30 PM -- WBL Vs. Prior Lake
8:10 PM -- Osseo/Maple Grove Vs. Forest Lake

Saturday Nov 1st (@Super Rink 3)
9:00 AM -- Lakeville South Vs. Prior Lake
10:40 AM -- Centennial Vs. Edina
12:20 PM -- Elk River Vs. Eden Prairie
2:00 PM -- Jefferson Vs. WBL
3:40 PM -- Prior Lake Vs. Osseo/Maple Grove
5:20 PM -- Centennial Vs. Wayzata
7:00 PM -- Elk River Vs. Forest Lake
8:40 PM -- Jefferson Vs. Lakeville South

Sunday Nov 2nd (@SuperRink 3)
9:00 AM -- Wayzata Vs. Cottage Grove
10:40 AM-- Centennial Vs. Lakeville South
12:20 PM-- Elk River Vs. Edina
2:00 PM -- Jefferson Vs. Forest Lake
3:40 PM -- Wayzata Vs. WBL
5:20 PM -- Eden Prairie Vs. Cottage Grove

Everybody will be looking at how Edina does, playing Cottage Grove, Centennial and Elk River. But the Jefferson/Lakeville South game will be one of the more interesting games. Forest Lake (with 7 returning peewee A players) will be tested by Maple Grove on Friday night is also an interesting game.

Eden Prairie with a strong set of forwards plays Elk River on Saturday in what is another very interesting game. The Blaine area is certainly going to have a lot of hockey action this Halloween weekend.

Note that I did not include the "Duluth East Tourney" scheduled November 7-9. I call this an invisible tourney since certain teams will enter the tourney as if it were something else. That is sort of the way Duluth East conducts the tourney. Unlike the "Spirit of Duluth" tourney, which is out in the open later in the season, this one is sort of invisible.

The reason for this is some Districts have a maximum of 4 tourneys total that a team can attend in a season with severe penalties if they exceed that number. The problem is the rule can't be evenly applied at all player levels and should be dropped or modified. If for no other reason, that it is never enforced.

So to get around the invisible Duluth East Tourney every year, teams at the peewee level call it something else. The problem only arises when they win the tourney and put it in the news or publicize their win in "Lets Play Hockey".

Centennial's Jamboree or Review is in the same position and last year a similar type affair at Minnesota Made was scrutinized closely by one District to make certain it was not a tourney. But that was not D10 so things have changed this year and the Jamboree or Review is going forward as a non-tourney.

My whole point is that the rule should be eliminated. It is a rule that creates an unfair situation for Districts that have few league games and creates problems by making the District Boards apply or dodge the rule. The result is a lot of "grown-ups" arguing over what is fair.

District 3 Showing Strength

Post by clutchngrab »

It looks like Wayzata handled a strong Centennial team rather easily and OMG outscored their opponents 18-4. Wayzata is consistently strong, what do we know about MG?
