really
Guilford,
As far as a "AAA" team playing in the tournament goes, suck it up. The reality is that this team playing increased the level of competition at the tournament. All of the players on that team were age appropriate for the level, so I don't see where your issue lies with "they should have won", especially being from a Wayzata program where your player probably has only lost 10 games in his life. How do you think all the little towns feel when they draw you in a tournament?
You sound like you're from Wayzata, so for a person from an association the size of Wayzata, you'd have to realize that when you held your Pee Wee tryout you most likely had at least 75 more kids than Green Bay did.
As for sportsmanship, when incidents on the ice happen and there is a lull in play, a player can lose focus, get heavy legs, it is very likely that this team used a chant to get themselves refocused on their mission, win the hockey game. Have you ever played a sport? If you have you would know this.
Blaming a tournament for a teams attitude that you, oh my, you, deem inappropriate is ridiculous. I'm certain that the Duluth tournament commitee that accepted Green Bay didn't expect them to come in and cream every team they played. AFter all, Minnesota hockey is the best in the country isn't it?

Guilford, nothing wrong with AAA teams playing it raises the competition. I'm sure if you asked the Wayzata coaches they would like to have an "AAA" team in most of their tournaments.
TOP, you make the same point I made above, but you should have ended your comments at that because your next comment is one of the dummest comments I've ever heard.

Did you really say that. Come on. I played sports for 40 years, Youth, High School, Division 1 and professional and I have never seen chants to get refocused. Ok, I wasn't at the game so I don't have all the facts but from what Guilford said, there is no excuse for cheering an injured player regardless of how you want to spin the tail.
I'm curious what the chant that the Green Bay players did to cure their heavy legs. Was it "YEAAAAAAA!!!!!, BEEEERSSSSSSS! UGHA UGHA UGHA!!!!!"

Duluth Tourney-PeeWee A
Guilford,
You must be a Wayzata parent because you failed to mention the checking from behind penalties by Wayzata. The last one by #16 in the semi finals vs Green Bay was one of the most blatant cheap shots I have ever seen at the Pee Wee level. #16 is a very good player but he cannot take a hit. I know when we play Wayzata next time, we will be taking the body on #16 every chance we get to try to get him to retaliate. His father was an NHL goon, I hope his son isn't following in his footsteps.
Also, the Wayzata parents are some of the biggest whiners, crybabies and poor sports I have ever seen. After they lost to Green Bay in the semis, I personally witnessed 4 of the Wayzata moms screaming and yelling at the tourney officials in the lobby. It was obvious they had been drinking and they should be ashamed of the way they acted and Wayzata hockey should be embarrassed of them. Funny thing, one of the moms acting like a fool was #16's mom. Just another screwed up hockey family!

guilford, enough of the excuses, your team just got beat by a better team. I think every player on the Wayzata team plays AAA in the off season so that excuse doesnt fly. Just because its winter there not AAA players now? Wayzata should demand to play these type of teams (AAA) instead of the cupcake blowouts they usually play. But I have said this many times before, Minnesota hockey has only a handful (10-15) of teams that can play with each other, the other 80 associations are on the outside looking in. Same teams at state every year, yawn, boring. The Green Bay club is top notch, I highly doubt they were cheering an injured player on the ice. I would love to see more AAA teams come to town.
We should have known you guys are correct and acted a 100% perfect and just those darn other people that caused all the issues.guilford wrote:The kids are the ones who want to play other associations in tournaments and not AAA. The kids don't mind losing to other associations, it's the winter AAA teams that they don't like to see in tournament because those teams don't have to follow the same rules. They can pick any player on the planet to be on their team. I don't think it's whining when the kids just want an even playing field. And, yes, it is supposed to be about the kids, isn't it?
Regarding the Wayzata moms screaming at the tournament officials, to my knowledge it had nothing to do with the game. It began when a mom asked if we could have an announcer for the game because there were several unusual calls/situations and no one knew what was going on. The mom was being respectful and simple wanted to know why there was no announcer (pretty standard for tournament, I would think). She was treated very rudely by the tournament people. She even had the gall to politely point out something in the tournament rules that had been handled incorrectly (according to their own rules) and again was verbally assaulted. The other moms were reacting to THAT, although I'm sure it escalated into a few things about the game as the situation progressed. And I doubt they were drunk at 10 am.
If you had won the Green Bay game I doubt we woul have gotten this type of note, rather it would have been:
Look at how good we did even beating a top notch competition.
Quit complaining.

Wayzata moms
Guilford,
You are lying your butt off. I was standing right there when these ladies?? from Wayzata were going crazy. Their behavior was totally out of line. Another Wayzata mom had to grab them and tell them to knock it off and quit embarassing the team. These classless, uneducated schmucks were out of line and out of hand. Shame on them!
Also, I didn't say they were drunk. They drinking in the parking lot before the 10am game.
Quit protecting them and tell them to grow up. It is only 12/13 yr old hockey.
Needless to say, Wayzata didn't win the sportsmanship award and
I'm sure the tourney won't have them back next because of their behavior.

A Wayzata parent complaining about the lack of a "even playing field"?? Unbelievable, and I thought I've heard it all!!guilford wrote:The kids are the ones who want to play other associations in tournaments and not AAA. Wayzata is one of the biggest benefactors from not playing on an even playing field with most other associations in Minnesota hockey. How many players tried out at the PeeWee level in Wayzata this year? 175+? How many does the average Minnesota association have, 45 - 75? And you have the NERVE to complain about the Green Bay team?
You ought to be ashamed of yourself. If anything, you should be welcoming the stiffer competition that out of state AAA teams can give you, unless you prefer to just roll over the smaller Minnesota associations and win every tournament going away. How sad is that?
There IS an argument to be made about allowing out of state AAA teams into Minnesota youth tournaments, but Wayzata parents are not the ones who should be making that argument.

#16 is not a goon, he has a great set of skills for a kid his age and will alway have a target on his back due to this. I was not there, but I would assume the kid took an excessive amount of abuse in the game.
GB and Guilford-you should talk at the parent meeting. I believe GB is right in playing AAA teams is a good thing considering the lack of consistant competition in the district.
Wayzata is not used to losing and does not take it well. The have great coaching, high numbers, and fat wallets to develop the kids.
I will take this opportunity to add this public service announcement. I think Wayzata should look longer term though and give more kids the opportunity to play at the A level. Bantam Blue is undefeated and it isn't even close (remember as PeeWees, these kids made up the top two teams in the state (b-level), now they are one). Peewee Blue and Gold are in the top ten, and Squirt Blue, Gold, and Navy have not lost a game yet and have won all 4 tourneys they have been in. Having an extra "A2" team at each level would expose deserving kids to A level competition, but I am not sure the Wayzata Brass would be willing to take on the amount of losing that would bring. It would also slow down the dominance at the B level. I see Edina and Woodbury have started, and hopefully they will continue if their numbers and talent level dictate.
Losing to an allstar team is good medicine for them, since they probably have the same pool of quality players to choose from as the Green Bay team.

I'm sure guilford's thoughts do not represent/coincide with the 17 players, coaches, and 99.9% of the parents on the Wayzata Pee Wee A team and Association.
Let's not allow 1 person to muddy the waters.

Never said #16 was a goon. (His Father was the enforcer/goon when he played pros). A wise man once told me "A goon isn't born but made"

#16 is one of the top players in the state and he is a 1st yr peewee.
What I did say, he needs to learn to take a hit and learn not to check kids from behind. (Stop patch means stop NOT check)

All-Star team??
Wisconsin offers two types of winter hockey 1) Association hockey 2) Tier 1 hockey (4 total teams)Toomuchtoosoon wrote: Losing to an allstar team is good medicine for them, since they probably have the same pool of quality players to choose from as the Green Bay team.
Wisconsin follows USA hockey age qualifications for playing levels. This year PeeWee players are 97 and 96 birth year players. ( No 95's)
GreenBays youth hockey Accociation called the Bobcats consists of 4 teams at the PeeWee travel level.
A-15 Players
B-14 Players
C-12 Players
C-12 Players
http://greenbay.pucksystems2.com/page/show/9642-peewee
Thats a total of 53 players playing Association PeeWee hockey and 17 players playing Tier.
How many teams/players are in the Wayzata Association at the PeeWee level?
A-1
B1-3
B2-3
C-3
Thats 10 teams. Thats at least 150 players to chose an A team from. My math says thats 70 total players against 150+. Thats more than a 2 to 1 ratio. BTW how many 95's are on that Wayzata team? The players on that Greenbay team are all 96 birth year players.

did you ever consider....
that maybe Green Bay came to the tournament because they want to play the best competition they can get, no matter whether they are AAA, AA, or whatever you want to call them? The fact is, the better PWA teams in MN would compete very well in Tier 1 AAA. And there's a lot of Tier 1 AAA teams that would be way outmatched by many MN PWA teams.
Did you think about why the GB coach looked to be pleasantly exchanging contact information w/Wayzata team officials after the game? Perhaps both teams see the value in playing one another and aim to setup additional games.
The fact is, if you want to improve to be your best, you have to play the best competition you can legitimately compete with on a consistent basis. GB got plenty of game from the MN teams it faced. It was no walkover, as anyone who watched them play the Wayzata game and White Bear Lake final would attest. Centennial gave them a good game, and Minnetonka had one bad period that cost them big.
And as for the "cheer" or "chant" thing in the Wayzata game - the facts are, as the player was being attended to, GB huddled like teams normally do during a timeout or intermission, talked strategy/motivation whatever, and gave a short "go green bay" or something like that when they broke the huddle - something they likely do reflexively. When the player got up and skated off, they banged their sticks in respect as tradition dictates, and the parents in the stands (both sides) gave the player a warm applause.
Also seen were several pleasant conversations befroe and after between Wayzata and GB supporters.
Just one person trying to stir the pot. I thought the games this weekend were excellent, fun to watch, and hard fought, just like 99% of the other people there.

Quit trying to sugar coat Green Bay they are not very good.
Then by that logic Wayzata Pee Wee A is not that good either. And this is one of Minnesotas best teams? Sure there are good players on the team but why cant they beat a so-so team from Green Bay that draws from a smaller pool of talent. I know its not all about winning but its interesting to see how some parents get all bent when they start to realize they are not the best. Their is a big gap between winter AAA and Minnesota association/little league. The best way to deny this fact is to avoid AAA play and that is what Minnesota hockey wants to do. So when a big gun goes down (Wayzata) the panic begins. Minnesota winter teams are just not as strong as the AAA teams. Association hockey will develop your kids just fine. The Minnesota system allows many B and in some small associations C players to get a chance to play A hockey.

Southernmost and 5th Graders:
It was the Green Bay Gamblers and they were ranked 11th in the country last week. They were the better team, but they can be beat by the top MN association teams-it was just their week.
Kids should learn to take a check, but they also should not be run at or be made a target of physical intimidation at 11 years of age. SOunds like it was an emotional game and that the truth lies between the two sides of the story. Most moms are very protective of their kids and do not like seeing their kids hurt, or feeling that the other team is trying to hurt their kid. It was their perspective.
It is what it is. It is kind of funny that a bunch of adults are chatting about this online (me included and I do not even have a kid involved-LOL).
