B2 Regional Playoff Interest

Post by ontheglass »

There are a growing number of districts offering B2 programs for PW and Bantam levels. Thus far, each district runs a tournament at the end of the season to crown a champion - but the season ends there.

While I recognize it isn't likely MN Hockey will create formal regional/state tournaments for B2 levels - I suspect most metro districts would be interested in participating in an "end of seasion" regional playoff.

Something like the following:

* Each participating district can rotate hosting the tournament and arranging ice time.

* The top 2 (or rotating 3 if needed) teams from district play-offs are awarded spots. If either team opts out - then the 3rd place team would have a shot..

Is it possible to try organizing this type of event without formal MN Hockey support? Is this already being done and I am just not aware of it?

Just some thoughts for anyone in a B2 program.

Northern MN has been doing this for many, many years.

Thanks... I figured someone would have started organizing an event. Has this ever expanded to include metro teams? I am convinced there would be an interest, though I am not aware of anyone that has organized anything.

District Directors for D11, 12, 15 & 16 each put in 1, 2, or 3 teams from the lower B ranks for a 'Gold Region' Tournament.
We have done it for probably 20 years.

Its a little tougher at the bantam level, but the peewee event is very exciting and gives kids a chance to pariticpate in this type event that may never get the chance, at least in hockey anyway.

But you don't need DD if someone is willing to put on an invitatinal tourney somewhere.

We did it once about 15 years ago at the state level for B1's also.

2 years ago Breezy Point had a B2 Regional Tourny, last year I believe it was in Duluth.

We are in D4 (Bantam B), more than half the teams we play don't even have an A, so we are facing the top kids in a program (and before you say it, yes, I know D4 isn't great hockey!). This is an example of why a B2 would work well. All it takes is 2-3 "A" level players to make a marginal team fairly dominant in a B league. I recognize that those programs have a tough decision to make, do we go "A" and get killed or do we go "B" and become fairly dominant. . . . answer, have a B1 and a B2
