Hill-Murray - St. Thomas Academy
Over the past 3 years HM-STA has turned into a great rivalry. The 2 games last year between the eventual state champions were great hockey games. The 1st one at STA was very physical. STA outshot HM 37-24 but HM won 4-2. The 2nd at the Excel as part of Hockey Day was another classic. STA was 15 seconds away from winning the game and the conference when HM threw one on net from the corner and it banked in off of a STA d-man. HM won 4-3 22 seconds into the OT when Cecka scored. They split games in both 2006 & 2007. Both teams are down slightly from last year. STA has the advantage of a more experienced goalie with Altrichter. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game at Aldrich and the rematch at STA on Feb. 7.

yeah, and what about Mtonka
They beat the Scwans cup 3rd place team, albeit at home. STA may be down a bit from last year but Hill is also down quite a bit, good but down, and this year STA has a couple more players that would be at STA regardless of hockey than Hill does, simply based on the family history, which means they weren't recruited, a sign of a down year. Hill's first line could be great but they miss the net more than they hit it or so it seems. Second and third line are interchangeable and other than holler and bahe, probably a bit disappointing some of these kids haven't met the challenge, and as a team not as physical as last year which will be just fine for STA.
Specialy the likes of Daly (good skater but small) and some of their really good but young kids, like Schurhammer, Schroeder, Reid, Flemming, et al..
If they played last years Hill Team it would be a walk on size alone, but this year STA won't get pushed off the puck accept by the first line of Hill and the D, but they can skate around the D, and if Hill falls behind watch the D start skating the puck up ice leaving the system behind. Classic watching Mtonka take them off their game. Tonka was young but great skaters, they had one outstanding player in the senior Coatta and then a bunch of good young hockey talent. Can't believe they are out of the top 10, team to watch next year.
STA gets the goalie nod by about 20 lengths. Tonka and Centennial scored all of their goals (except one by Tonka I didn't see it) stick side on Shawnnessy (can't spell it). If STA is smart they go hard stick side and there will be ice cream and cake on the doorstep after every shot.
If Leckner can't get the second and third line to hit then I think STA wins a close one simply cause they are on the road, but back home in a few weeks, its STA by 4 or 5. If STA goes stick side with every shot its a slam dunk.
Go Cadet Colonel's...

East is an opt-up. They're a tiny bit below the enrollment line, as of a few years ago.formerlybackofnet wrote:East and Moorhead don't "opt up", the size of thier school makes them AA.HShockeywatcher wrote:"I think the Schwans cup showed that they are fine where they are at!"
Agreed. That mean Duluth East and Moorhead should stop opting up? Hmmm, I doubt it. I think wildhockey's right.
Moorhead is not, though.
There are 7 opt-ups: East, Grand Rapids, Cloquet, Roseau, Hill, AHA, and Benilde.

STA by more than a close one
Wow was I wrong, STA dominated the skating part of the game (which, last I checked was still part of the game). Wasn't the close one I thought it would be, but the hill goalie stunk up the joint, why wouldn't you pull him when? must not have cra p for goalies coming up. Whats with all the shots stick side, did the MSHSL distribute the scouting report. 80% of STA shots went there and many went in or hit pipes or left ice cream and cake on the door step.
STA won with better coaching, players, skills, and goalie, as well as scouting

My Pioneers are basically a one line team and teams are learning that if you contain that line, you have a decent chance of winning. Last night, Hill's top line was out played and spent too much time in their defensive zone. The other lines offer no offense at all right now. They need more from a senior captian (and others) for this team to contend. Shaughnessy is showing his age & lack of experience. Tough spot for a Soph to step into the shadow of Flip and not expect the team to take a step back. He looked apprehensive last night and appears to lack confidence right now. I think he's starting to realize that things won't come as easy it appeared at the start of the season.
Hill is vulnerable right now. They appear to be looking around for someone to fix their problems rather than taking it upon themselves to improve & contribute. They are not nearly as talented & deep as last year's team and seem to lack the leadership last year's club had. However, they are good enough to play with anyone and have the chance to create their own positive experiences and leave their own mark.
This section is really up for grabs. White Bear has shown flashes of being the team to beat and Stillwater has shown signs of improvement. You do not want to have to beat both of these teams to get to state so it is important to secure that top seed ( I suspect HM, WB, & Still will be the top 3 seeds).
Hang in their guys & keep working at it. The first third of the season is over and time to begin making changes. Good teams find ways of working through tough times & are better at the end for it. Championships aren't won this time of year but championship teams are often formed. Good luck guys.
