Centennial vs. Maple Grove 2/7/09
Second time these teams meet. Should be an interesting game. Thoughts or predictions?

As much as I would like to see Maple Grove prevail in this tilt I do NOT think it will happen. Anytime the CRIMSON have a big game against a highly ranked team it never seems to happen. And it won't happen this time either. They just have not been tested enough this year to convince me they can get over the hump against a good team let alone Centennial.
There are to many factors that lead me to that conclusion. The most obvious is the fact that is that MG coaching has the inability to make adjustments during games - so coaching goes in favor of the Cougars.
My friends kid plays for the MG team and he says it all the time when it comes to the coaches. I previously indicated that when MG played Blaine and I'll stand by that comment.
MG has loads of talent this year - especially their 1st line with Gross, Malone and Dee...just do not think it will be enough to get by the Cougars on their HOME ice sheet! Pitlick will be in the line-up this time as well.
Centennial to deep and to strong.
Have attended 5 games this year with my buddy that the Crimson have played. Blaine and Centennial they didn't fair well with the outcome. Elk River game they looked like an average team in a tie. They played well against Coon Rapids and N. Metro which everyone would agree are weak sisters.
Would like to see Maple grove pull off an upset - just don't see it happening unless LUCK is on their side. They will need a HOT goalie to make it happen.
I'm with northhockey23 on this - Centennial 6-2 in this one!!!
Crimson goes home disappointed AGAIN!

Yea you beat an Elk River team that was missing 4 of there big guns. From where I'm sitting this is an easy win for the Cougars especially since Pitlick is back in the lineup.Maple Grove Crimson#1 wrote:Elk River is a pretty good team they beat 4-1 on the road.
I do agree with GoldThorpe that you team has does have a lot of talent. It's just to bad that there's no coaching to go along with it...
Cougars 5 - 1

It's going to be a tough game for the Crimson to win. Their 1st line is extremely quick and fast. (Dee, Gross, and Malone) The 2nd line is more physical and takes teams out of their game. (Sinz, Horton, Carlson) Probably would be best to put the 2nd line against Pitlick. The coaching for MG is pretty weak and won't make any adjustments during the game. Also, they won't make a change in goal. It would probably be their only chance to go any where in the sections. I do think if MG had better coaching they would have had a legitimate shot of beating Cougars and Bengals. MG does have the talent this year. Cosette is one of the conferences best defensive players and other solid defenders. A very good 1st and 2nd line. Who know's? All it takes is a few stupid penalties by the Cougars and this one could go the other way.

Don't forget this same team went into the Cougars barn last year and stunned Centennial for their first loss. I think this game is going to be a good one. Maple Grove's first line is very good. I think they may be able to match the big dogs from Centennial. If Larsen has a game like Edina, I don't see the Crimson coming close.

HSHockeyFan - That is wishful thing! If were going to bring last year into the equation I distinctly remember a 9-1 drubbing that the Cougars put on the Crimson squad in the most important game last year. Stick with this year and stop living in the past.
I just do not see the Centennial team losing on their home ice - not two years in a row to this team. It would be great to see it happen - just do not believe it can be done unless Crimson goalie is spectacular and the 1st line is on fire!
Crimson has turned back into a 1 line team since they moved the Malone kid back onto first line. Number 7 offered a physical presence with Dee and Gross - by moving Malone to that line it transformed 1st line into strictly a finesse scoring line with virtually no physical presence. It also has had an effect on the second line because Malone added balance and created things for that line. You have to agree that the Horton kid and Sinz kid are less effective without him - they have both cooled off since early season production! Neither is skilled enough to create things on their own.
Must have been ONE of the great coaching adjustments by the Crimson coaching staff - or was it that one of the parents got to the coaches to allow the buddies to play together! My understanding is they have played together through Peewees and Bantam levels according to my friend.
I personally liked the way the MG team was playing when it was more balanced - steady production from two lines. The other teams only have to focus on the 1st line now. Yea, they tear it up against weak teams...BALANCE and DEPTH is what beats good teams. Play that group together on POWERPLAYS and in situations that dictate it - then make adjustments to get things back together during the coarse of the game. Keep the other team off balance at times. That would mean making in game adjustments which seems to be a weakness when it comes to the CRIMSON coaches.
They have the talent to win big games - it just needs to be utilized properly and in a manner that is best for the overall success of the team. Success will be determined on how the season ends and if they have
any success in sectionals. Beating up on weaker teams in the early season or based on wins from LAST year should not work into the equation.
GO CRIMSON!

GoldThorpe- Gross and Malone played with a kid named Tim Wolford (CJHL) playing through Pewees and Bantams..Dee was always paired with Birkholz (USHL). The first time these three skated together was last year. The reason why the coaches put these three together is because they need a way to stop Pitlick and Co..and Bjugstad and co. Malone, Gross, and Dee are all fast enough to give them a run.

Murray - actually - don't feel that silly. Cannot be completely right all of the time. I was in attendance last evening and thought the CRIMSON squad played a complete game with good intensity. The better team won last night. Team got contributions from all three lines - #7 looked like the MG best forward and got them off to a great start. Took the pressure off the number one line to carry the whole load. Remember I stated that Balance and Depth are what beat good teams. The Defenceman were stellar led by Cossette who is the teams BEST defender...and the Goaltending played with confidence as the whole team did in front of him.
Great job for all three periods, the Cougars never seemed to get things going - that I credit the whole CRIMSON team!
I've always said the team is talented enough to make good things happen. Great, the team beat an opponent they needed to to be considered a threat. Now the MG squad has the pressure to keep things rolling in the right direction into sectionals. I hope they can.
CONSISTENTLY can the MG Crimson play with the BIG BOYS. Again - time will tell as sectionals are almost upon us. There are still a big game with BLAINE on the horizon. This is a big confidence boost for this team - they just might have all the things in place to make a run to state!
That is if the coaching doesn't interfere!
