Will there be a major upset in the sectionals this year?
Do you think there will be a major upset at all in any section this year?

1AA - Century. Saw them play against East and do very well. Not much offense to their team, but top notch defense.
2AA - Holy Angels. They have lost to Edina, but not very respected due to their conference and non-MSHSL games.
3AA - Cretin is the only realistic choice here. Plus it would be nice to see a private school playing for the AA title, even if it is Cretin.
4AA - Roseville. Not sure that any of the top 4 coming out can really be considered an upset, but this is close
5AA - Maple Grove. Watching Blaine and Centennial be hyped up all season and Maple Grove do well under the radar it would be nice to see them make it.
6AA - BSM. Not exactly an upset, but they haven't been talked about much.
7AA - Elk River. Skating all season to quality losses against good teams and winning this section would earn them some deserved respect.
8AA - Tech. Roseau winning wouldn't be an upset, it would just be what usually happens; you don't win head to head three times. Tech has tied both teams; 1996 was the last year neither Moorhead nor Roseau made it to state.
1A - Lourdes is 7-2 in section play including a 3-1 win at Red Wing. This is a very tight section.
2A - Richfield. Only quality losses on their schedule. Too bad they got such a low seed despite no section losses.
3A - Hutchinson. Better experience than New Ulm during the season. Match up should be similar to first.
4A - Mahtomedi - Tied STA last time they played. Could be another close one. This will be an interesting section to watch
5A - Denfeld. Not that I think it'll happen, but Hermantown winning won't be an upset.
6A - Alexandria. Winning 3 times in a row is tough. They have two one goal losses to Little Falls.
7A - Marshall. Despite losses, they have experience in big games and have played tougher competition than the rest.
8A - Thief River Falls. Probably won't happen, but they are the only other team in the section with a winning section games record.

Yes, they do defense. I'm hoping that this year if they meet in the section finals it won't be a blow out like last year.defense wrote:I don't know, Little Falls seems to come on pretty strong in the post season.scarface wrote:6A
LF seems to be peaking at the right time however and Alex has been streaky which they can't afford to be against the Flyers. I think for Alex to win this match up they have to get on the board early at least twice and the Cards defense needs to man up in front of Hemingway. My only knock on the Cards is that their D play too soft on the blue line in their offensive zone and being small, don't clear out in front of the net as well as some bigger D men do.
Should be a great game if they meet in the finals but Alex has to get by Sartell first.

I would have to say that my upset pick would be sartell over alex in ot.scarface wrote:Yes, they do defense. Well.....that certainly qualifies as an upset. Sartell has been playing well of late too so it's not as far fetched as it might have been earlier in the year.jmann32083 wrote:I would have to say that my upset pick would be sartell over alex in ot.scarface wrote:Yes, they do defense. Well, what do you consider a "MAJOR" upset. In my mind for it to be a major upset it'd have to happen in the quarterfinals between a #3-#6 or #2-#7 or #1-#8 game. I mean, once you get the semi's most of the AA sections are deep enough that the top 4 seeds beating up on eachother wouldn't be considered anything major...
