Mound-Westonka vs. Orono Re-Match

Post by Reidy09 »

This is just a discussion for the upcoming game on Tuesday.

Last year, Orono was favored to win in the Semi's over Mound but both teams had sloppy goal-tending. Mound won in OT 7-6, eventually losing to Breck 6-0 in the Semi-Finals.

The teams have split games this year, Mound winning 3-2 @ home earlier in the season, and Orono winning 2-0 later in their most recent match up.

Both teams finished with a 15-10-0 Record. Orono is the #2 seed, Mound is the #3 seed.

But again, these teams have a huge history, and are huge rival's.

This year, they face each other in the exact same situation.

I'd like some opinions from others on how they think this game will turnout.

Orono should win this rematch for one simple reason:
Shut down Riley Horgan, in the first game he picked Orono apart
in the second game Orono shadowed Horgan the entire game and Orono
came away with a easy victory. It really comes down to if Horgan can
lead Mound to victory.

Should be a great matchup. Both are coming off to close for comfort OT wins. Orono's was against a much better Blake team. They have been on a roll the past month and probably have a slight advantage. In a game like this the first goal will be huge as neither team has a "shut you down goalie". Both teams have great individual game breakers in Ben Persian and Riley Horgan but I think overall Orono has a bit more talent up front with Hansen, Skoog and McGinty.

I'm going with Orono in a 4-2 win.

I've seen this happen in both girls hockey and boys hockey..and it just happens that other players step up and fill that void.

Kirby Horgan
Nick Kuehl
Colin Mayer
Ben Curti

Those are the names on Mounds squad that stick out the most. Last year, Curti was the Sophomore who sent Orono packing in that 7-6 OT thriller, and he's improved this year. Colin Mayer has a ridiculous amount of speed and can definitely shine. Kirby Horgan is a younger version of his brother Riley, and Nick Kheul is a really good 2-way defensemen.

I think it'll be a really close game. I'm interested in seeing who will be starting for Mound, Davis or Swanson...but I know that Gabos will love to see his beloved Mound fans again.. =D

This four players you are talking about dont come close to the talent that orono has, mound will not be able to keep up with orono tuesday

Funny. This is exactly what we heard last year from Orono fans and look what happened? You guys were sent home packing.

All I ask is this year, you guys don't make up excuses as to why you lost. Just accept you weren't good enough and move on.

Simple answer: Private schools

While the core of the group is still together, they lost thier youth goalie McMahaon who was very good to Benilde, 6 players to Blake's Varsity most noteably DeVries, Ordway and Oncay and Born to Breck. Still good enough to garner the second seed and will give Mound a great game.

I honestly don't think Mound can pull this off, they almost lost to the 11th seed in double OT and they didn't look good in the process.

It should be a pretty good game and entertaining no doubt. As long as Orono doesnt allow horgan to make his moves they should win the game no problem, look at what they did at the end of the season. Assuming that Orono's forwards get it done it should be Orono and Breck in the final.

This will be a terrible hockey game with two VERY average teams who are both very lucky to be this far. Oh well at least they get one more game.

Agreed. This has the makings for a very good rubber game-rivalry-matchup. Not sure what's gotten into Flat, but he sure is bitter these days.

Luck has nothing to do with it. Breck, Orono, and Mound are the top 3 teams in the section no matter how you slice it. This match up was talked about even in the beginning of the season...

Sorry. Goldy you are right, that was a little bitter. I had a bad day yesterday with repeated car problems but I was dissapointed in the level of play by both teams in the previous games. I came down there expecting to see two upper level teams and both teams played to lose. I just wish Breck had some competition.

Orono should have no problem technically but the rivalry nerves might kick in and then anything goes. Oh, and as long as Mound's goalie doesn't kick the net off constantly. If that starts I hope the refs stop it with a stiff penalty.
Orono has a lot of talent and this should be their game.
Shut up and play!

ok, who cares really unless you're from mound or orono.
Both teams are at best average. Persian and Horgan stand out against average or less opponents. See how well either does against top notch competition...

Both teams are above average as their 16-10 records state. Certainly can't be considered elite but cut them some slack. Horgan and Persian are both VERY good players and would be first line on 99% of teams in the state.

This has all the makings of a great game.

Simple anwser to Orono's struggles: most of this years seniors' parents forced Brad Ryan out as head coach two years ago. Ryan was the KEY to the future success of the Orono program...it is disapointing to see some quality talent go to waste. Wondering what some of the parents are thinking now?
