Top State Tourney Games of 00's
The other thread got me thinking, what are the best state tournament moments over the past decade. I'll start with some notable ones:
-2002, Kronick comes off a broken foot and scores 4 in the semi's v. #1 (I think) Roseville, AHA goes on to win AA title.
-Centennial wins 2004 AA championship with 3 straight shutouts by Greg Stutz. Championship v. Moorhead was the last great championship game we've had.
-Greenway v. Eden Prairie (2001). I've never seen the X erupt during a HS game like it did when Guyer scored in OT.
-Warroad v. Totino Grace 2005 A championship. Warroad wins in 2OT

Those are really the only ones that come to mind.DubCHAGuy wrote:The other thread got me thinking, what are the best state tournament moments over the past decade. I'll start with some notable ones:

there should be an asterisk by one of the games. Stutz did give up a goal, but we did not replay. Same goes for Moorhead in 05, no replay. Now we have it and goals are overturned and awarded.DubCHAGuy wrote:The other thread got me thinking, what are the best state tournament moments over the past decade. Another game would be the semi-final in 03 between AHA and Anoka. Anoka stopped the passing by AHA and some poor goaltending and Anoka pulls off the upset.

If anything, there should be an asterisk in the 2009 Championship game and read *3-1. There should be no replay in high school hockey period! They have four refs! Where is the purity? There is none anymore. Let the refs call the game the way they see it. Most of the time they can't even get the replay correct. I'm not saying the call in the 2009 Championship game was wrong because they never showed it at the X until way later and I missed it. I'm saying as whole in all sports the replay is a horrible idea! No purity at all!Zamman wrote:there should be an asterisk by one of the games. Stutz did give up a goal, but we did not replay. Same goes for Moorhead in 05, no replay. That's the best one I've seen.Gr8 wrote:I thought Edina vs. Benilde last year was an unbelievable game. It was back and forth all the way until Edina won it late in OT.
Not only that but this one set that attendance record at 19,500 something.
For sentimental reasons, I will also mention Duluth East's 3-2 win over WBL in the 2005 quarterfinals. Not too often you see a game winning goal by a freshman at State.

What I liked about this game was that not only was it close but it was an extremely well played game by both teams. In terms of the quality of the overall play I don't remember ever seeing a better one.Gr8 wrote:I thought Edina vs. Benilde last year was an unbelievable game. State game
Wheeler (Breck Forward) vs. Stalock (south st. paul goalie) in 2004 semi's was maybe one of the best games ive seen. I loved watching Stalocks aggressive style of play coming wwwaaayyy out of the net and trying to make something happen offensively. Stalock made unbelievable saves, but still came up a goal short losing in a 3-2 game.

Grand Rapids and Patrick White are up 3-0 in the last semifinal game of Fri night in 'o8, and as usual in Minnesota, 1/4 of the people leave early. Burnsville storms back and scores 3 goals in the last few minutes of the game to force OT. Then White leaves a sweet drop pass and Grand Rapids wins 4-3 in OT. That's got to be near the top of the list!!

I think I remember Edina's band "starting a lets go Roseau chant", so if you weren't a Hill Murray fan that game sucked. I remember some BS reffing and an injured Mike Lee in net for Roseau to. It is tough to protect your net when a messed up groin muscle is slowing you down. Hill Murray was a solid team and found a way to shut down Ness though.juniorboy wrote:hill murray domming roseau 6 to 2 in the 2008 state tourney. packed huse for the night game and it was sweet
Definitely remember that one - that was exciting. My dad and I got up to leave with, oh, about 5 min to go. As we walk up the stairs, burnsville scores. Then walking along the concourse toward the exit, I stop at the rail to watch another minute or two. Sure enough, burnsville scores again! There were some empty seats right there, so we're like, might as well sit down and watch the end now. We could hardly believe it when they tied it up and definitely were glad we stayed.DCwildcats wrote:Grand Rapids and Patrick White are up 3-0 in the last semifinal game of Fri night in 'o8, and as usual in Minnesota, 1/4 of the people leave early. Warroad v. Totino Grace 2005 A championship.
This has to be one of the great if not the greatest. 2ot game the sent the unbeaten Warroad time to the state title. It was ended by TJ Oshie laying out and makeing a pass across the front of the net to Aaron Marvin, one of the most amazing passes ever seen!
I believe it was the 2006 class A championship and STA is down by 3 or 4 goals to Duluth Marshall with about 5 minutes left. They come back and win it in regulation starting Marshall streak of 3 runner-ups (not sure on the exact details but I think I got the gist of it). Of course, everyone hates class A and hates STA even more so I'm sure this won't get any consideration.
