Roster of 18 for PeeWee B2
Our association is making a B2 team with 18 skaters instead of 15 as they had said during tryouts. These extra 3 kids should really play C, but we don't have a C team, and they didn't want to play for another association for various reasons. I understand their point of view. It is just a tough situation all around.
Some parents are really worked up about these 3 extra skaters. Is it that big a deal? Any thoughts from experienced hockey people would be appreciated.
Thanks.

wow, tough one
Wow, talk about having the wrong number. A couple more and you'd have two teams with a nice roster of 10-11 skaters.
There won't be much ice time. The parents of the better players may easily get frustrated watching the games. The disparity in ability between the best and worst kids will be great.
I'd be very disappointed to see this.

Be kind. Rewind.
You just need to find a few more games....
tougher games its 1,2,3 1,2, 1,2,3
line 4 gets some ice but nothing to speak of
easy games its 3,4,2, 3,4, 3,4,2
line 1 goes once in a while...
Up north this is always a problem especially at the B level because we have no C teams and there is almost always a disparity between line 1 & 4...
If you have a good coach I would not lose any sleep over it.

anythign more then 15 skater is a problem and very hard to manage. Games are not very long. maybe 3 12 minute periods? just think - only 5 months left of that problem. its early in the season, games have not started. Fix the problem before kids get short changed.
is there any "A" Teams in the State that have more then 15 skaters and 2 goalies?

Elliott:
Your suggestion is indeed the answer to this situation!! As long as this view is communicated to partent UP FRONT, and is carried through during the year, the vast majority of skaters/families should be fine. Makes for a crowded bench though........and the NEED for all skaters to buy into this phylosophy so everyone is enthusiastic and supporting each other. The approach, ie the "more skilled" players receiving more ice time against stronger opponents can also be used very successfully even at the A Bantam level..........since on most teams, there can also be a very large difference in talent between the first and thrid line players.

And yes it works well at every level.
And teaches a lesson...
you want to be a 1 or 2, then work on it.
you want to stay a 1 or 2 then work even harder.

My son played on a 12-person team Pee Wee B team and two years later a 20-person Bantam B team, when a couple injuries and kids quitting forced the association to drop the B2 team.
Yes, The kids defininitely enjoyed the 12-person experience. With the 20 person team there was some grumbling (more with the parents than the kids) early in the season. By January, things settled down and the kids got used to their roles and enjoyed the season and did well on the ice and the parents shut up.
Make the best of your situation and don't worry about what you can't control

I won't leave sleep over it but would not be happy paying for less game times at the B2 level. A/B1 i could see it as these are probably the more driven players. To me, B2 is not the elite. Seems to be more of the participation level ... the fun is in playing games and where you have the opportunity to play fair/equal minutes to allow them to work and get experience to play on higher teams. my 2 centselliott70 wrote:You just need to find a few more games....

You seriously think team get allocated dollars and games based on how many players are on the team ? Perhaps other associations are different but games, practice/ice time are set independently of how many you have on your roster.hockeyboys wrote:with the extra dollars collected for the 3 extra skaters - there should be extra dollars to buy more ice time, play a few more games. So - total ice time for each player really should remain the same, though spread out over some extra ice times.
I am very familiar with this situation and Elliott has nailed it to a tee and so did hockeyboys. The team in question was given 2 extra full sheets/month so that they could schedule more scrimmages to offset the loss of ice time because of the extra players. This along with the smaller slush fund because it is divided between 20 instead of 17 should also help make the parents happier........That is if that is even possible in youth hockey. (cheap shot....sorry)
