Another Way to Look at Peewee A teams Nov 24 2009
Last week, a summary of Minnesota hockey associations that are playing peewee A hockey this year was given. There are two changes to that list. Little Falls in D15 is not playing A level this year and Greenway in D12 is playing A level this year. The overall total is not changed (at least for this week). There are 103 peewee A teams this year in Minnesota.
North Region-Both D11 and D12 district teams are skipping the Thanksgiving holiday tourneys, but not D2. Six of the eight D2 teams are in four different tourneys and they will be challenged. The two top teams from D2 will play in a tough Eden Prairie tourney where they will need all their skills to do well. Mounds View (with Irondale) host a SuperRink tourney that have tough D10 teams entered. Forest Lake drops into Hopkins and Roseville drops into Burnsville as underdogs. So the early season testing of teams potentially making the North tourney continues. This still looks too early to call.
D11-This year Proctor has fielded a peewee A team. The Rails played in the Superior Tourney losing to the host 5-1, Dryden 12-0 and Highland Central 8-0. The Rails beat the Northwest Stars 4-3 in consolation. Hermantown traveled to Fogerty Arena to play in the Spring Lake Park tourney, losing their first game to Armstrong 4-3, beating Sibley 5-4 and North Metro 4-3 to take the consolation trophy. The Duluth Lakers took a trip into D2 (a good thing to do before regionals) and were beaten by White Bear Lake 4-3 and Roseville 4-1. They also played Stillwater. Before they traveled, the Duluth Lakers and Hermanton met in D11 action and tied 5-5.
This week the Lakers have games with Grand Rapids and Hibbing and play a D11 game with Cloquet. Duluth East, after a week off, is taking a swing through D15 playing Brainerd and Moorhead. They also stop off at Grand Rapids to play the Thunderhawks.
None of the D11 teams are playing turkey day tourneys. So it will be a quiet holiday week this year. The Lakers played a good White Bear Lake team tough, but then lost to a struggling Roseville. That is enough to give the Lakers the #3 seed this week. Duluth East remains on top and Hermantown takes the #2 seed.
D11-Hunting season is over and now these teams will focus. They have all struggled in the early going. Grand Rapids opened with loses to Rosemount 3-0 and Hastings 3-2 this past week. They play the two Duluths (no beep, beep) this weekend (beep, beep is a punch line to an old range joke). Virginia has opened with big losses to some tough teams (Jefferson, Rosemount, Hastings, and Alexandria). They have their work cut out for them. The Blue Devils start D11 play against International Falls and Eveleth-Gilbert this weekend.
Hibbing faired only a little better against the same teams losing by less then Viginia. Hastings beat the Bluejackets 6-3 (Virginia lost 9-0). Hibbing entertains the Duluth Lakers and Hermantown this weekend. As with D11, no D12 teams are in tourneys this week.
Grand Rapids has fared the best so far this season and came on strong at the end of the season two years ago to make it to the State Finals before losing to Edina. But last year the Thunderhawks died and did not make it out of the D11 playoffs. This week give them the #1 seed. The #2 goes to Hibbing who loss by less and the #3 to Virginia who loss by more. These teams are usually better than that, so with hunting over, go Rangers.
D2-White Bear Lake has jumped out to an impressive lead in D2 winning their first five games. On the weekend, they beat Hastings and the Duluth Lakers. This week they play in the Eden Prairie Tourney playing Eagan, Centennial and Minnetonka in pool play. The Bears will have their chance this year to come out on top of their pool and advance to the championship round on Sunday. Stillwater beat Forest Lake 7-1 last week and didn’t show for a D2 game with Highland. The Ponies played the Duluth Lakers on the weekend. This week, they are also in the Eden Prairie tourney. In pool play they play Mpls Park, Omaha and Eden Prairie.
Moundsville hosts (with Irondale) the SuperRink tourney this year. After beating the Saint Paul Saints 8-0 in league play, the Mustangs were upended by North St. Paul 4-3. This weekend they open their tourney against D10 Princeton. Tartan is also in the Mustang’s tourney opening with another D10 team, Champlin Park. Mahtomedi won the Spring Lake Park tourney, beating North Metro 4-1, Cottage Grove 4-1 and Chisago Lakes in the championship game 5-2. The Zephyrs are .500 in league play. It will be interesting to see if they can “make a move”.
Roseville bounced back to win two games this week, beating the Duluth Lakers and North St. Paul. The Raiders always play in the Burnsville tourney and that is where they will be this week opening pool play with Lakeville North, Hudson and then Edina. Forest Lake is entered in the Hopkins tourney drawing a tough Rogers team.
D2 is shaping up to be a battle between two teams, White Bear Lake and Stillwater. Both will be at Eden Prairie and how they fare may give some early indication as to who is best. But right now, the nod goes to the Bears. That makes White Bear Lake the #1 seed this week and Stillwater the #2 seed. Roseville, Mounds View, Forest Lake have been off to a slow start. The tourneys they play in will provide them opportunity. Roseville has the toughest road, but they make the Burnsville finals regularly in that tourney. Forest Lake will be challenged by a tough Rogers team, but the Lakers have played tough themselves. But one can’t ignore Mahtomedi’s win in the Spring Lake Park tourney. So this week, the #3 seed goes to the Zephyrs.
South Region-Turkey day tourneys have some meaning for this region, particular the Hopkins tourney since STMA rated to be among the best in D5 will open play with Hopkins in a game that could be repeated in the South Region in March. Orono is also entered in the Hopkins tourney and will be challenged by a tough D6 Prior Lake team.
Wayzata and Osseo/Maple Grove are entered in the Eden Prairie tourney where Wayzata opens with Elk River in a game that pits two of the states top teams. D4 has their own tourney in Mankato as key D4 West Division teams competing with outstate teams and D6 Kennedy in an early season test of who is best in the D4 West.
D3-In D3, Wayzata, after getting pushed in beating Rosemount 2-1, beat Mpls Park 5-0 in a key D3 game. The Trojans now travel to Eden Prairie and will open the tourney against Elk River in a game that will match two of the top teams in the state. Unfortunately, it will be played in the worst new arena in the state, so get there early if you want to find a place where you can see the game. The Trojans complete pool play with games against Arapahoe and Rochester. Osseo/Maple Grove had a busy week beating North Metro in D3 action 3-0, tying Lakeville North 2-2 and beating Hopkins 3-1. They play in the Eden Prairie tourney drawing Blaine, Chaska, and Lakeville South. They have also scheduled a weekend game with touring Roseau.
Orono team has snuck out on top in D3 and stays on top winning one game. This week the Spartans play Armstrong and then open play in the Hopkins tourney against Coon Rapids. Hopkins has a great 8 team bracket play tourney this year with some potentially very strong up and coming teams. Hopkins is one of those teams, even though the Royals have gotten off to a slow start. They may have the best goalie in the state, but time will tell. The Royals open play in their tourney against St. Michael/Albertville, a team that maybe the top D5 team this year. With Elk River out of the D10 Green Division and St. Cloud off to a slow start, Rogers (also an entry) has a good shot at winning the D10 Green. Orono, a Hopkins D3 rival is on top of the D3 today; D6 Prior Lake/Savage could end up with a East Regional seed this year. It makes for an interesting tourney.
North Metro played in the Spring Lake Park tourney and lost in the Consolation finals to Hermantown 4-3. The Pirates lost to eventual Champ Mahtomedi 4-1 and beat the host Spring Lake Park 4-3 in early tourney games.
D4-In the East Division, three teams have moved out; New Prague, Faribault, and Mason City. One team, Albert Lea, has shown some strength and the last two teams Austin and Owatonna are struggling. New Prague lost a tough game to Hopkins 4-1 last week, playing only 8 (and then 9) kids, but followed that up with D4 victories over Austin and Albert Lea 3-0. The Trojans look like a real up and down team this year winning easily one week and struggling to win against the same teams the following week. This weekend they play a D4 game with New Ulm. Albert Lea lost to Marshall 5-3 and tied Red Wing to round out their week. The Tigers play in Mankato’s tourney this week. In pool play, they draw D4 rivals Luverne and St. Peter and play the Kansas City Stars.
Faribault last week went to the Superior tourney and got of to a bad start losing to Dryden 6-3 and D1 Highland Central. The Falcons came back to tie and then beat the host in consecutive tourney games 4-4 and 1-0. This week they stay home to play Dodge County and D4 Owatonna. Owatonna plays Austin also this week.
In the D4 West Division, Mankato could be the strongest team. The Mavericks opened up their D4 season with an impressive 7-3 over St. Peter/Le Sueur, a team that has been playing tough. The Mavericks have their big tourney this weekend. It is an eight team, two pools, tourney. Mankato draws Kennedy, the Sioux Falls Flyers and the Waterloo Jr. Hawks in their pool. In the second pool, the teams are Luverne, Albert Lea, St. Peter and the Kansas City Stars. With four D4 teams it will be an early season test to see who is best.
Marshall sits on top of the West Division, but split two D4 games last week, beating Albert Lea and losing to New Ulm 4-2. Luverne also split their games losing to St. Peter 6-4 and beating New Ulm 5-4. Two weekends ago, Luverne played Sioux City and Wichita in weekend games. This week they are in the Mankato tourney and draw Albert Lea, St. Peter and the Kansas City Stars. New Ulm split games with Luverne and Marshall last week beat Marshall 4-2. This week they play three D4 games against Mankato, New Prague and Waseca.
The #1 seed in D4 still is New Prague. The Trojan’s weakness could be the lack of players that slows them over the next few weeks. Mankato keeps the #2 seed, but Faribault with a string of D4 wins this week takes the #3 seed.
D5-League action opened ten days ago and Sartell and Hutchinson jumped off two wins each. Hutchinson beat Mound/Westonka 5-1, River Lakes 8-4 before losing to Crow River 3-1. Sartell beat Crow River 5-2, Mound/Westonka 4-2 and upset STMA 5-2. Sartell plays three more D5 games this week against Hutchinson, Buffalo, and MAML. Besides playing Sartell, Hutchinson plays MAML. St. Michael/Albertville loss to Sartell was a surprise. To put it into perspective, the Knights beat Centennial and St. Cloud four days earlier. The Knights had D5 wins over Crow River 5-3 and Willmar to end the week. The Knights travel to Hopkins to open their tourney playing the host.
Buffalo played Willmar last week in their D5 opener. This week the Bison play Rogers and then return to D5 playing Sartell and River Lakes. The Buffalo/Sartell match-up should be interesting early season test for both teams.
With minimal early season results, D5 should still be topped by STMA. The Knights showing in the Hopkins tourney will be a strong indicator on how good they are. Sartell has not been a tough team in the early going. But their win over STMA gets them the #2 seed.
East Region-In the Burnsville turkey day tourney this week there are 5 D8 teams (Woodbury, Rosemount, Hastings, Hudson, and Lakeville North) playing 4 D6 teams (Edina, Burnsville and Eastview and Jefferson). In the Eden Prairie tourney there are 3 D6 teams (Eden Prairie, Chaska, and Minnetonka) playing 3 D8 teams (Eagan, Rochester and Lakeville South. With potentially half of the D1 entry (Mpls Park) in the Eden Prairie tourney also, those two turkey day tourneys look to give peewee A fans a potential view of the East Region in March. Or something to talk about here next week.
D1-The Mpls Park Storm took on the two more top dogs this week losing to Edina 6-3 and Wayzata the next day 5-0. The Storm has gone 0-3-2 against five top teams and will have an opportunity to add to that list this weekend. At the Eden Prairie tourney, they play host Eden Prairie, Omaha, and Stillwater in pool play.
While Stillwater was practicing on Tuesday, the Capitals were surprised that the Ponies didn’t show for their regularly scheduled D2 game last Tuesday at Highland’s Charles Schultz Ice Arena. So half the Capitals team wore visiting and they scrimmaged each other (can’t waste the ice time). They may have made the game up later in the week. But who knows. We do know that the Caps played in the Superior Tourney beating the Norwest Stars 6-0, Faribault 11-1, and Proctor 8-0. They beat the Dryden Paperkings in the Championship Game 5-3. This week the Caps play Irondale in D1 action.
Irondale tied the Saint Paul Saints 2-2 last week in D1 play. This week besides playing Highland, the Knights play in the SuperRink turkey day tourney opening against D10 CINB. The St. Paul Saints take turkey day off after their game with Irondale.
Last week, the Storm tested themselves and lost to Edina and Wayzata. This week they continue the testing playing tough teams in Eden Prairie tourney. It would have been nice to have seen Highland play Stillwater, but that didn’t happen. Highland did win the Superior Tourney, but this week, the Storm remain the #1 seed in D1 and Highland takes the #2 seed.
D6-D6 opened their league play November 3. Nine of the ten teams will have played 5-7 on their 18 league games by turkey day time. Only Edina has played less (3 games). With two major tournaments this week (with 7 D6 teams in those tourneys) D6 play this week shuts down after Tuesday and does not get rolling until next Tuesday.
Burnsville beat Eden Prairie in one key D6 match-up this past week 2-0. The Blaze also beat Jefferson 4-3 on the weekend. The Blaze play Chaska in D6 action this week before hosting a 12 team (Silver Stick type scoring) tourney this week. The twelve teams are divided into three pools. Each team plays three pool games with each game worth 13 points. The top point getter in each pool advances along with the #4 point getter in any of the pools. There are four D6 teams entered. The Blaze play surprising Rosemount, and an unnoticed Andover, and Hastings in their pool.
Edina also entered in the Burnsville tourney. The Hornets had a good week. After beating two AAA teams on the weekend, they beat Mpls Park. They play Kennedy in D6 play and then open play Friday at Burnsville. They play Hudson, Lakeville North and Roseville.
Eastview was unbeaten in D6 until the Lightning lost to Prior Lake/Savage on Sunday. They will open play in the Burnsville tourney against D6 opponent Jefferson. Jefferson lost to Eastview 6-2 ten days ago and to Burnsville on the weekend. This game is an interesting match-up for the Jags and a chance for them to show improvement. Woodbury and Anoka are the other two teams in the Jags and Lightning pool.
Eden Prairie has their own brand of turkey day fireworks in their tourney. Sixteen teams are entered. Eden Prairie played four D6 games this week, losing to Burnsville, beating Jefferson 5-1, Chaska/Chanhassen 6-2 and Prior Lake/Savage 6-3. In the Eden Prairie tourney, the 16 teams are divided into four pools. The winners of each pool advance to play in a four-team championship round on Sunday, the second place finishers advance to play in a four-team consolation round on Sunday. Pool points are conventional (2 points for a win, one point for a tie, with tied breakers). In their tourney pool, the Eagles host Omaha, Mpls Park and Stillwater.
Chaska is also entered in the Eagles tourney. Before the tourney, they host Burnsville in D2 action on Tuesday. Chaska draws Lakeville South, Osseo/Maple Grove and Blaine in their pool play. Minnetonka is the third D6 team in the Eden Prairie tourney. The Skippers lost to Eastview 4-2 and beat Apple Valley last week. They draw Centennial, White Bear Lake and Eagan in pool play and could win their pool if they can get by Centennial in their opening game.
Apple Valley and Kennedy split their games with each other this past week. Valley beat Kennedy 4-1 and then lost to the Eagles four days later 3-1. Valley is scrimmaging Farmington this week. Kennedy plays at Mankato this weekend in the Mavericks tourney. They open pool play against the host Mankato and then play Sioux Falls Flyers and the Waterloo Jr. Hawks.
Prior Lake/Savage looked to be on a roll two weeks ago and were soundly beaten by Edina. The Lakers then bounced back with D6 wins over Jefferson and Minnetonka only to their next two D6 games (Chaska and Eden Prairie). They ended the week beating Eastview 5-2. They open this week with a tough scrimmage against Lakeville North and then travel to Hopkins taking on Mound/Westonka in the opening game of the Hopkins turkey day tourney.
Edina remains the #1 seed this week. The Burnsville tourney will be a new adventure for the Hornets. But they should be in the finals. Burnsville has strung three D6 wins together and will be playing a tough Chaska team the night before taking on a surprising Rosemount team in the opening game of their tourney. But the Blaze are the #2 seed this week with a potential interesting match-up with the Hornets for the Championship game. Eden Prairie came back after losing to Burnsville and looks ready to go into the Championship round in their tourney this week. They take the #3 seed.
D8-Woodbury made a statement in D8 this week, beating Lakeville South 6-3 and following that with a win over South St. Paul 8-1. The Royals play in the Burnsville tourney this week taking on Anoka and two D6 teams (Jefferson and Eastview) in pool play. That will be a good test of D8 versus D6 in this early season play. Rosemount played Wayzata early last week and it took a last minute goal by the Trojans to beat the Irish 2-1. The Irish followed that game by tying Farmington 1-1 and beating Hudson 3-2 in D8 play on the weekend. The Irish play in the Burnsville tourney, taking on Burnsville, Andover and D8 rival Hastings in pool play.
A third D8 team, Lakeville North, is also in the Burnsville tourney. The Panthers beat Cottage Grove 7-1 in their D8 opener, tied Osseo/Maple Grove 2-2 and lost to Hudson 2-1 in D8 play on Sunday. In pool play, the Panthers play Roseville, Edina and Hudson.
Hudson is 2-3 in D8 play beating South St. Paul as well as Lakeville North. They lost to Farmington, Rosemount and Rochester. Hudson will be the fourth D8 team and plays Lakeville North, Roseville and Edina in pool play. Hastings is the fifth D8 team in the Burnsville tourney. They hold a D8 win over Cottage Grove and last weekend took a tour of D12 beating Virginia 9-0, Hibbing 6-3 and Grand Rapids 3-2. On their way back, they exited 35W just north of 694 and played White Bear Lake on Sunday losing a tough one 2-1. In Burnsville pool play, the Raiders take on Burnsville, Andover and D8 rival Hastings.
Lakeville South last week beat Farmington 2-1 before losing to Woodbury. The Cougars travel to Eden Prairie and in pool play take on Chaska, Osseo/Maple Grove and Blaine. The Cougars have beaten Blaine earlier this year 5-1 and Eden Prairie 4-3. Their pool looks to be the toughest in the tourney. Rochester was surprised by South St. Paul and the Packers tied them in D8 action this past week. They beat Eagan 4-1 and Hudson 3-1 before the tie. Rochester plays Arapahoe, Wayzata and Elk River in Eden Prairie pool play this week and will be tested.
Eagan has struggled in the early season, but may have improved. They took a swing north to the Moorhead area last week and came away with a 2-1-1 record beating West Fargo 4-3, tying Moorhead 3-3, beating the Fargo Raiders 6-1 before losing to East Grand Forks 8-0. In the Eden Prairie tourney things will get tougher as the Wildcats play Minnetonka, White Bear Lake and Centennial in pool play.
Farmington and South St. Paul take turkey day off. The Tigers play Apple Valley.
Red Wing lost to Mankato 6-2 and Albert Lea 1-1 last week. They play Dodge County this week before hosting their own tourney the week after Thanksgiving. Dodge County lost to Owatonna 4-3 last week and play Faribault in addition to Red Wing this week. Northfield beat Waseca 6-0 last week and play Austin and New Prague this week.
Rosemount’s effort at Wayzata gets the Irish the #2 seed this week. Woodbury by beating Lakeville South takes the #1 seed. Lakeville South falls to #3 with Lakeville North, Rochester and Farmington challenging.
West Region-Turkey day tourneys are a good test of relative strength of the different districts. Where D6 and D8 are testing each other in the Eden Prairie and Burnsville tourney’s as a precursor to the East Regional, top D10 teams have slipped into both those tourneys and could really shake things up. That means this week D10 is out to prove itself in four different tourneys. D15 teams are playing mostly a D15 schedule and D16 is just getting rolling. D16 has two things of interest happening, Roseau is taking a trip to the cities, playing 5 games including two on Saturday at the UofM and East Grand Forks is hosting their own tourney against non-Minnesota teams.
D10-Maybe Elk River has a challenger in the D10 Blue. Andover has opened the D10 season with four straight wins, beating Spring Lake Park 8-0, St. Cloud 8-2, Centennial 6-4, and Coon Rapids 8-4. Elk River opened their D10 season last week with three straight wins beating Champlin Park 2-0, Coon Rapids 8-1, and Anoka 3-1. The Elks play Chisago Lakes this week and then travel to Eden Prairie to take Wayzata in opening pool play in EP’s turkey day tourney. The Elks and Wayzata should be the marquee game of the Thanksgiving season. The Elks also play Arapahoe and Rochester in pool play.
Andover has slipped into the Burnsville tourney with little notice and will play Rosemount, Hastings and Burnsville in pool play. Anoka made it to Burnsville also. They draw Woodbury, Eastview and Jefferson in pool play.
Centennial beat Chisago Lakes 4-0 and Anoka 2-0 after losing to Andover. Centennial travels to Eden Prairie also and draws Minnetonka, White Bear Lake and Eagan in pool play. Blaine tied St. Cloud in their only D10 game and will not play another D10 game until December 8. In seven weeks between December 16 and Feb 3, the Bengals will play 17 league games or an average of 2.5 D10 games per week. The Bengals will play only one tourney during that time, at Brainerd. Blaine also travels to Eden Prairie and draw Chaska, Lakeville South, and Osseo/Maple Grove in pool play.
Chisago Lakes made it to the championship game of the Spring Lake Park tourney by beating Sibley 3-2 and Armstrong 3-0 before losing to Mahtomedi 5-2. Along with Chisago Lakes, Anoka and Coon Rapids are winless in D10.
In the Green Division, Rogers has strung two D10 wins together beating St. Cloud 2-0 this week. St. Cloud is off to a slow D10 start going 0-2 losing to Andover and Rogers. They play in the SuperRink tourney this weekend opening against the St. James Canadians. St. James proved to be a tough team two years ago in the SuperRink tourney. St. Frances beat Princeton 2-0 in their only game. Champlin Park beat CINB 4-1. CINB, Princeton, and Spring Lake Park is just getting rolling.
CINB plays in the SuperRink Thanksgiving tourney this week. This tourney is really eight, eight team, tourneys (Bantam A, B1, and B2; Peewee A, B1, and B2; and Squirt A and B). In the Peewee A tourney, CINB draws D1 (and co-host) Irondale in the opener. Champlin Park plays Tartan in the SuperRink tourney in their opener. Princeton is also in the SuperRink tourney drawing the other co-host D2 Mounds View.
Spring Lake Park struggled in their tourney last week, losing the opener to Cottage Grove 5-3, losing to North Metro 4-3, and losing to Sibley 3-0. Rogers and Coon Rapids travel to Hopkins for the Royals tourney. Rogers draws Forest Lake in their opener, Coon Rapids draws Orono.
Andover had an impressive week in D10, but they will have to do more to take the #1 seed from Elk River. But it gives Andover the #2 seed. Andover could surprise host Burnsville in their tourney this week. Champlin Park played the Elks close in losing 2-0 so this week they take the #3 seed and should do well at the SuperRink, but Centennial may be revving up for a good run. Turkey day tourneys will be a good overall test for D10 teams.
D15-The question is not “who’s on first, but who’s playing peewee A hockey in D15. It looks like the Little Falls are not playing A level this year. Sorry to see that, but let’s hope they play A level next year. Brainerd posted their first D15 win last week beating Fergus Falls 11-2. They lost to Moorhead 4-1 on the weekend. This week the Warriors play in no tourney, but play five games (Duluth East, Greenway, Detroit Lakes-D15, Roseau, and Wadena-D15).
Moorhead lost to West Fargo 3-0, tied Eagan, and beat Wadena 12-0 in addition to beating Brainerd. This string of wins establishes the Spuds as top dog this week. This week the Spuds play Duluth East (twice?), Alexandria in D15 and Bemidji. Alexandria has gotten of to a good start winning 5 of their first 6 games. They beat Willmar, West Fargo, Greenway, Hibbing and Virginia. Their only loss thus far is to Bemidji.
Crosby/Pequot Lakes are the Northern Lakes Lightning this year. They opened with loses to Fergus Falls 6-0 and Detroit Lakes 5-2 before beating Wadena 7-1. The Lightning have an off week. Prairie Centre tied River Lakes 0-0 and played Detroit Lakes. They have a return match with River Lakes this week. Fergus Falls beat Northern Lakes, lost to Brainerd, lost to Sartell 7-0, and lost to Moorhead 7-1. They play Detroit Lakes this week. Detroit Lakes played the Fargo Angels besides beating Northern Lakes last week. This week they play three D15 games, Alexandria, Brainerd and Fergus Falls.
The #1 seed this week goes to the Spuds. They beat Brainerd, but the D15 season is just getting going. Brainerd takes the #2 seed and Alexandria, by winning 5 of their first 6 games takes the #3 seed.
D16-Last week the question was is Roseau as strong as last year? While Crookston delivered the opening shot going into Roseau and beating the Rams 8-5. What is most interesting about that game is the 8 goals the Rams have given up, but the Rams are just starting to roll. They play Hallock in D16 action this week and then tour the cities playing Rogers on Thursday in the evening, Osseo/Maple Grove on Friday evening, and the 97 Fire and a Colorado team (probably the Arapahoe team in town for the Eden Prairie tourney) on Saturday at Mariucci and then Brainerd on Sunday morning. With Rogers and OMG being both big physical teams, the defending champs will have their hands full.
East Grand Forks hosts a tourney this week. With 6 teams entered, the Green Wave play the Winnipeg East Railcats and the Fort Frances Boston Pizza (Boston Pizza? Should stop there next summer on my way to fish in Sioux Narrows area. By the way, never trust your brother to net an 8-lb (estimated) walleye).
What happened to Crookston? The town is aptly named as the crazy river that runs through the town makes so many bends that every house in Crookston can claim to be on a bend in the river. The Roseau game was their first D16 game. East Grand Forks has been playing since the first week of November scrimmaging Grand Forks teams among others. They made a weekend trip to Moorhead and played West Fargo and beat Eagan.
Bemidji is just getting rolling and has games scheduled with D12 Greenway and D15 Moorhead this week. Warroad opens their season this weekend, entertaining the Grand Forks Seawolves at the Gardens. Thief River Falls opens their season this weekend with games against Duluth East and the Grand Forks Greyhounds.
If a team beats the defending champion, they should take the #1 seed, but East Grand Forks looks too good. Give the Green Wave the #1 seed this week, Crookston the #2 seed. Roseau remains an unknown commodity; the Crookston game was the first game of the season. Good luck Rams on your trip south.
