Replay-The Series

Post by wblhockeyfan8 »

While watching the Wild on FSN, I saw a commercial that really caught my eye. Apparently, Gatorade has produced this series called Replay. They had scoured the nation for a key game, decided by a bad call or maybe a fluke win in a prolific rivalry game. Any unresolved conflict really, is what they were looking for.

After visiting the website ( http://www.replaytheseries.com/pages/main ) , I watched the hour length episode about the story of two rival football teams from 1993 who ended their game in a 7-7 tie. Gatorade was offering them a chance to replay their big game, 15 years later, to resolve this empty tie.

The State of Hockey has it's yearly share of big rivalry games, some of which are recognized on a national scale.

What are some rivalry/playoff/state tournament games that you remember being a devastating loss or upset? Any interesting memories or thoughts? Any games you'd like to see replayed?

Check out the original thread from last year's Hill-WBL section game dated March 4th. I found it, and made a comment as to put it back on top of the forum board.. If you go to Page 9 of the thread post, you will see the pics of the GOAL that was disallowed...

Hmm. Where to start?

Cloquet 6, Duluth East 5, 2008 7AA semifinal. (GWG with 11 seconds to go)
Grand Rapids 5, Duluth East 4 (OT), 2007 7AA semifinal.
Cloquet 1, Duluth East 0, 2006 7AA semifinal.

Basically, my last three years of high school.
That about covers it.

There are many great and exciting games to choose from, but the ONE game that is the most controversial and remembering to me and the whole state of HOCKEY fans, was the DULUTH EAST vs. APPLE VALLEY 5 over time game where Duluth East clearly scored a goal in the third overtime and was never video reviewed...Even though Apple Valley won this game, I would love to see these two great teams lace the skates up again!! I hope Gatorade chooses this game

THAT was good.

It won't be long until I have to leave my sanctuary here in our nation's capital and return to the ever-dangerous upper Midwest. I'd better brace myself.

These guys might be too old now ;), but the 1985 state quarterfinal between Jefferson and Minnetonka. It was the 7:00 game, went to 3 OTs and the league decided to suspend the game until Fri morning in order that the late game be able to start.

It was was a very good game and both teams had their chances, although many Tonka fans will lament that MHS nearly doubled JHS' shot total and overall had the much better play. Some also were not exactly happy that Erickson started Roehl in goal over Madsen.

I don't know how early into the 4th OT Friday morning it happened but Jefferson scored on a shot from just outside the blueline that went through Roehl's legs (not the first one either) and the game was over. MHS beat Bemidji later than day in OT and lost to Hibbing in 2 OTs in the consolation final, making it a long 3 days for the Skippers.

To add to the misery, a single digit-loss MHS team went to the section quarterfinal the following year only to lose 2-1 to a 12-12 Richfield team riding an extremely hot Damien Rhodes. Yes, the Vikings like woes for MHS date back over two decades.

Okay that's what I thought you meant, and seeing those photos again made me want to puke a little bit. :-&

The Puck is in the back of the night in the first picture, and in the second-the puck is still in the back of the net while Ryan Wolters is in the the process being crosschecked into it.

I think that will be a feeling I'll never forget after I graduate, when they took that goal away, and I was in the process of group hugging about 15 people I barley know.

My brother played in that game....I remember making the trek to the Civic Center for the morning 4th OT...I believe it was over in approximately 1:15 into the 4th OT. Kind of a depressing end to a brilliant game.

My personal "replay" would be the 1981 Breck Mustangs vs #2 Minneapolis Southwest Indians at the Met Center to go to the Section finals. All I would ask for would be to replay the last 51 seconds. The Mustangs literally had 9 players and a goalie - though we rostered 22 (at that time, Breck didn't cut anyone and all of our players got to be on the bench - yes, at least 7-8 or them were "C" level players with the balance being low "B").

The Mustangs had come from nowhere to end up two games from state - taking down a respectable Bloomington Kennedy, and a Tom Hirsch led Henry team.

It was the first game of the evening and the Met Center was full on one half of the lower level with Southwest supporters, and 1/3 full on the other with Breck supporters (our class sizes were 55 at that time!). As the game moved on, the stadium began to fill with fans from the next game - Jefferson vs some other hockey power.

Breck's goalie, all stater Steve Kudebeh, was brilliant turning away shot after shot. With ten minutes left in the third, Kudebeh had stopped over 50 shots and held Breck in a 2-2 tie. The energy of the crowd was incredible as everyone in the place, except for the Southwest faithful were screaming for the Mustangs to pull off possibly one of the biggest upsets in MN Hockey that year, perhaps the decade, perhaps ever.

And then it happened, with 51 seconds left, the Mustangs scored to go up 3-2. Breck fans were dancing, Jefferson fans were dancing, half the stadium was in complete shock while the other half was jumping for joy as they thought they were witnessing the end of a decades long Southwest hockey dynasty.

And now....why I want the next 50 seconds replayed...Southwest dumped their big guns on the ice - Lundeen was their main guy - and they weren't going to be humiliated. They scored two goals in the final 50 to move on to the section finals to go to state. Our 9 guys sat on the bench for five to ten minutes - some crying, some wondering what just happened, all too exhausted and shocked to do much.

Jefferson ended up beating them in the final and eventually won their first state championship.

So Gatorade....I am too old to skate a full game....but would love to replay that last 50 seconds to see if things could be different!

Some of you should really consider sending in some of the older games to Gatorade, they fit the criteria pretty well!

LOL - that's funny.

but, a hill guy like myself knows when the better team won. Wb got screwed. I was right there, just behind it and to the side and had a great view, I couldn't believe my eyes. The ref was right there too. They played a great game, at least what they had to to win, and they did it the year before too, just couldn't get the puck in the net. Hats off to sager, he plays that neutral zone one man cross forcheck or whatever its called each time against hill and and he's completely out coached lechner yet the yaahoos at wbl keep calling for his ouster? go figure. He did more the past two years to win with less talent than anyone over there in 20 years and deserved one last spring. At least two years ago HM won on their own. Last year the seventh man had a whistle...

Outstanding idea and it's a great show. I saw it on FOX/FSN.

You can watch episodes on the Web site,

http://www.replaytheseries.com/pages/main

Definitely nominate some special hockey games. The PA football game was a replay of a 7-7 tie from 15 years ago that had to be settled.

God forbid a team full of 30+ year old men get to relieve the best years of their lives.

No one said they were going to be phenomenal.

Turst me, you won't.

I am still extremely bitter and whenever I meet anyone from HM at the school I attend now, we immediately start fighting over it.

Well the thing about that is, not only were the players bad, but Gatorade totally ruined it bey trying to make it something it was not. The coaches were reading fricken scripts at halftime and it was all acting/a gatorade marketing ploy.
