HM - WBL
Let the fun begin. Hill-Murray and White Bear Lake in another Section Championship game. This game does have a history of the lower seed winning. Unfortunately for WBL, they haven't done it since 1996. HM has won the section as a #2 seed 4 times in the last 10 years. 2 of those times they knocked off #1 seed WBL - in 2000 and 2002. The other 2 times that they won, the # 1 seed was Roseville in 2007 and Tartan in 2009.
HM is the clear favorite. I like them mostly because of their defense and goaltending. They have 10 shutouts this year. Tim Shaughnessy is not a spectacular goalie but he has been very solid against pretty good offensive teams. He held Burnsville, BSM, WBL twice, Mahtomedi twice, Duluth East, STA twice, Holy Angels and Moorhead to an average of 2.1 goals in those 11 games. He had only a couple of lousy periods all year. Blaine at the X is one of them. Casto, Johnson & Cotroneo are outstanding D men. HM does lack a true goal scorer but has 3 solid offensive lines plus some defensive minded forwards.
WBL has gotten it's act together since their mid season problems and are 8-2 in the last 10 games. Birkinbine and Wahlin are great scorers and Schletty was very good last night with 30 saves against Stillwater.
HM has started slowly in recent games. WBL will have to get a jump on them early to have a chance. HM has shown that they get in sync and can take over games in the 2nd period.
I'm looking forward to an overtime game. WBL will hit a couple of pipes and have a goal disallowed in the OT. Jordan Johnson will score the winner for HM for the 3rd year in a row.

I will not comment on this game, for fear of my safety.
Seriously, WBL CAN win this game, but it will have to be THE perfect game... No short-handed situations... outshoot H-M, and hold the Pioneers to less than 25 shots... stop 96% of the shots on goal... eliminate odd-man rushes... score 2+ power-play goals. And to play in a controlled manner, not the chippy, retaliation-style that has made me throw pop bottles on the rink....and to follow refs outside to their cars!!!
In the end... it will be a MAJOR, MAJOR upset if WBL does win. H-M is the better team, and there is no argument about that. WBL just will need to want it more, and that means playing the way I have described...
Well...one thing to consider is where do you think thier (HM) heads were at after getting POPPED by Blaine in the Schwans...Not sure I would put much stock in the outcome that some would call a "friendship" game on the left side of the ledger....
That's a fair point. Coming off the Blaine loss might have played around with their heads, however keep in mind they had also just rolled over Duluth East by a considerable margin.
I think due to the nature of their rivalry, especially in the Section Finals, that it will be closer. Hill will outshoot WBL by 10 or 15, but Schletty will keep them closer than expected, in my opinion.

Hornie??? You're right, I forgot about the "divine intervention"..... but, I also am 100% behind your analysis of the 4-3 game. WBL didn't improve THAT much in two weeks after getting drubbed 5-0.. (because in Game 27, we see the same crap happening as in the 5-0 loss in December). H-M played with far less intensity in Game 2, as it appeared it was just the next game in a tournament.....Hornetsguy wrote:Well...one thing to consider is where do you think thier (HM) heads were at after getting POPPED by Blaine in the Schwans...Not sure I would put much stock in the outcome that some would call a "friendship" game on the left side of the ledger....

I have faith in my Bears.
Bears 3
East All Stars 1
Schletty has the best game of his life.
Goals from Wahlin, Birki, and... RJ? (Why not)
Now.. I just want to say that the chances of this happening... Well... Its NOT likely, but how cool would it be
It about time the BEARS rejoin the big show in St. Paul. and when that happens, we'll worry about the quarter final choke record...
