tryout issues
I was just wondering whether any programs run a thorough tryout process nowadays complete with actual athletic testing instead of a talk to the coach approach. the reason why i ask is selfish but i have seen some real selfishness in our program. I have a kid with a 26-28 inch verticle, can do as much situps and pushups as anyone on the var team, and in the past tied the upcoming captain in acceleration before 10th grade.
I am just thinking what I can do with my son who is going into 12th grade and wants to continue with hockey. I am thinking Juniors but don't necessarily want his grades to suffer. Our Junior gold team is not a real good option at least for good hockey Varsity seems to be the good old boy system instead of the prove it system. :?
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

So do you also want to see who is the best at skating around tires at tryouts? Can the kid play hockey? Some of the best probably couldn't jump the highest or do acceleration tests the best. Play hockey at tryouts, take the best hockey players.

politics suck here as well. only thing to do though is the best he can do and hope it works out.
This may be a very stupid question but can someone make juniors if they haven't excelled in high school?
we're not a hockey family and we've always thought that making juniors would be tougher than making high school

haha do not play in the mjhl it's nothing but a bunch of washed up goon hockey, varsity is much better. the minnesota wildcats of the mjhl is the worst run, least developing, lousiest junior team i have ever had the displeasure of laying my eyes on. i mean honestly if you play on that team, you need to quit right now. they would lose to many jgb teams.

have u ever watched a game. Its not bad hockey. By the way it is better than high school hockey becasue they play fifty games and playoffs. That is much better than playing a 25 game schedule, and unless you are in the classic lake conference, you are probably only playing about 8 quality games in the season, the rest of the games are against teams that are pretty poor.

Yes you may have some scrubs in the league, but there are also some very good hockey players as well, late bloomers..undersized..etc. i would say the level of hockey is just as good as varsity if not better. Don't get me wrong the league is nothing that will get you hard, but you can continue your competetive hockey career in a league like this. BTW the Ice Hawks could probably be in the NA.slapshot445 wrote:have you ever watched a game? the level of play is not nearly as good as varsity, they also get almost no scouts, while varsity hockey gets the scouts and the fans. the mjhl will draw about 50 people who are mostly parents to a game.

based on the comparisons of the both leagues (the mjhl and the mshsl) on which advances more to college hockey I would definitely say the mshsl gets more scouts. you can count on one hand how many kids the mjhl has advanced to division 1, and i'm pretty sure they have only advanced one to the nhl. compare that to the mshsl and i'm sure it's obvious which league is better. however, i have not seen all of the teams in the league play (including the ice hawks) and from what i hear the league is very unbalanced when it comes to different talent levels. thats probably what leads to all the fights and goon hockey.

i hate to tell you but the ice hawks get an extremely large crowd to fill the rec center each game. many are very loyal and you also get the casual hockey fan. and in case you hadnt heard the ice hawks are in the final four at the NATIONAL tournamentslapshot445 wrote:have you ever watched a game? the level of play is not nearly as good as varsity, they also get almost no scouts, while varsity hockey gets the scouts and the fans. the mjhl will draw about 50 people who are mostly parents to a game.

like i said i haven't seen them play, also if this is true this just shows how unbalanced that league is. the teams i have seen dont get nearly that much fans. they must be the very top of the league
you may think more scouts go to mshsl games but the difference is, from the mjhl, many players move up to the nahl and some go to the ushl, which is where almost everyone has to go now to play d1 hockey, so that is a mute point sir.
i'm not just referring to the guys that move straight from the mjhl to division 1 hockey, I'm talking about everyone who has ever played in the mjhl. even those who move up still almost never go farther than that league that they move up to.

Most kids never play past the mshsl so... your digging a deeper and deeper hole for yourselfslapshot445 wrote:i'm not just referring to the guys that move straight from the mjhl to division 1 hockey, I'm talking about everyone who has ever played in the mjhl. even those who move up still almost never go farther than that league that they move up to.russiawithlove wrote:you may think more scouts go to mshsl games but the difference is, from the mjhl, many players move up to the nahl and some go to the ushl, which is where almost everyone has to go now to play d1 hockey, so that is a mute point sir.

How many kids did the MJHL put into the NAHL from last year? I could count maybe 5 or 6..russiawithlove wrote:you may think more scouts go to mshsl games but the difference is, from the mjhl, many players move up to the nahl and some go to the ushl, which is where almost everyone has to go now to play d1 hockey, so that is a mute point sir.

This is your original post, you don't mention one thing about the unbalance of the league and no one ever says that it is an elite league. Your starting to change the subject cuz you have no arguement. Like I said before it is a league to continue your competetive hockey career in.slapshot445 wrote:haha do not play in the mjhl it's nothing but a bunch of washed up goon hockey, varsity is much better. the minnesota wildcats of the mjhl is the worst run, least developing, lousiest junior team i have ever had the displeasure of laying my eyes on. i mean honestly if you play on that team, you need to quit right now. they would lose to many jgb teams.

actually I didn't start talking about the unbalance of the league until my 4th post, and I have mentioned the unbalance of the league more than once. so yeah... Actually I'm kind of confused, what is this post supposed to mean???

Slapshot, I'd like to know which team you have seen play besides the Wildcats (they are a joke, i know)?
I know the Ice Hawks just got back from nationals in which they made it to the semi's. A team from the CSHL (which most say is on par with the MnJHL) won the tourney, they had to beat 2 EJ teams with a combined total of 16 future D1 players on it to win it. The Ice hawks lost to this team 4-3. They also lost 9 league games this year, wouldn't exactly call that too unbalanced. Even the wildcats took them for a crazy game in which the IH only won by two goals. Again don't see the unbalance...

well first off the ice hawks lost their semifinal game 6 to 1, not exactly a nail biter. also this isn't the national tournament for all of junior a, this is for tier 3. if the minnetonka bantam b2 team wins the national tournament for b2, does that mean they are a great team? also in that 2 goal game the ice hawks played their 4th and 3rd line for most of the game, and my guess is that after blowing them out multiple times they weren't exactly inspired to play their hearts out.

I have no dog in the fight here but are you sure about the 16 future D-I players on the other teams' rosters? From living out east, I know the South Shore Kings have an Eastern League team and an Empire League team. The D-I prospects play for their Eastern League team.
The Empire League is considered to be well below the Eastern League. The South Shore team in the Empire League is Tier III and they don't have any D-I recruits, at least not historically. Maybe things have changed in the past few years but that is how I remember it.

Its not a fact of whether or not they are "great teams" i don't know how you can argue with the fact that it is a place where you can play competetive hockey outside of the high school league, your simply bagging this league for no reason. Yes it is tier 3 but they would KILL jg b teams, i hope you were joking when you said thatslapshot445 wrote:well first off the ice hawks lost their semifinal game 6 to 1, not exactly a nail biter. also this isn't the national tournament for all of junior a, this is for tier 3. if the minnetonka bantam b2 team wins the national tournament for b2, does that mean they are a great team? also in that 2 goal game the ice hawks played their 4th and 3rd line for most of the game, and my guess is that after blowing them out multiple times they weren't exactly inspired to play their hearts out.MJ wrote:Slapshot, I'd like to know which team you have seen play besides the Wildcats (they are a joke, i know)?
