What's it look like? Who is up? Who is down? And who is just reloading? Preseason top teams?

I know EP lost a huge bubble of talent but they had some good talent on 12B also. Minnetonka has some very solid players back I think. The players that got it done for Edina have moved on but I suppose they are just reloading? NWC will be way down from last years great team I think. Not sure how the talent is moving in Lakeville. I don't have a feel for Centennial/WBL/Stillwater. Or the northern teams.

The usual suspects will most likely be there in the end, but the favorite should be EP. They won it last year and the Champs are the Champs until dethroned. Nevertheless, Edina should be tough. Last I heard Edina still hasn't named a coach and replacing the former will be no small easy task. I'll still take my chances with EP vs Edina again come March.

Who coaches U12 may be more important than who is playing. It would be nice if each team had a first year and second year coach to help smooth the transition and pass on accumulated knowledge.

Top Teams

Post by jackdaw »

Wayzata
Edina
Centennial
WBL
Lakeville North or South
Chaska/Chanhassen
Eagan
Stillwater
Maple Grove
Minnetonka
EP

All these teams have very good top end players which can effect the outcome of a game. At this age goal tending is really important too.

I would be willing to bet the state champ is one of these teams.

Assuming you are correct on the contenders for state, I'll filter it.

Edina
Centennial
WBL
Lakeville North or South
Chaska/Chanhassen
Eagan
Stillwater
Maple Grove
Minnetonka

Scratch Wayzata due to the transfers to the elite private school programs and EP isn't as strong in the off year. I could be wrong. A good list of solid teams.

I forgot about ER and Blaine and you can throw in Hastings too.

It really comes down to the big associations. The ones with approx 60 girls or so and have only one A team will shine. It becomes a numbers game with depth. Each team usually has one or two really nice players and then its a matter of how many good players a team has after that.

I think you guys might have Edina too high. They only have two girls with "A" experience back, neither was dominant, both are small. Their best scorers at U12B went to 14U. They will likely be first-year heavy, with a new coach and who knows what in goal. They do have a lot of kids to choose from though. By the end of the year they will probably be a lot better than they will at the start. Both EP and Edina will not dominate like the last 2 years. I look for Chaska and Minnetonka to be up in D6.

I wouldn't be so sure about Edina being weak. The first years they have are quite good..four of them played Squirts and did well. EP has a couple strong returners and numbers on their side. D6 will dominate again and my guess is Edina, MTKA and Chaska will be duking it out in March. No surprises.

I may not know details on every Assoc in the state, But right out of an Andover parents mouth I heard they might win 4-5 games this year. numbers are low and they are trying to co-op with Coon Rapids. but yet they are renked in the top 15?

Representing District 6 Only

Minnetonka (Strong group this year. 10A's we did very well-solid core)
Chanhassen/Chaska (+ Dominant 2 years back, - top heavy talent with a larger roster though)
Edina (Young team this year but they have numbers to be strong)
Eden Prairie (This is considered EP's off year. 2 yrs ago weak but they've improved their talent and recruiting since)

Someone in the know want to chime in on their Districts strong teams?

District 8

Anyone want to size up LV N vs LV S? How do they stack up to Eagan and Hastings?

District 3

?

LV N vs LV S

Post by jackdaw »

These two teams will be very close to each other. If they combine and form one A team they will be one of the top teams in the state. The other D8 teams like Eagan will be good wiht a couple of very good players and a good goalie. Woodbury should be strong because of their numbers. Hasting will also be good. They have a handful of good players and a returning goalie.
Top five teams will be Lakeville N and S, Hastings, Eagan and Woodbury.

Is combining being considered?

Does anyone know anything about district 2? Will Mahtomedi and Tartan field A teams? Will there be a co-op between NSP and Tartan?

In D11 Duluth should be strong at 12A this year. They have a good crop of returning players, a couple moved in from outside the area and a strong group of girls moving in from Pee-wees. If their chemistry is right, they'll be a force. Cloquet could have a decent team if they can get their poop in a group. They are struggling with numbers. Grand Rapids is a mystery as they haven't been real strong the last two years, but they might have some new players and some strong returning players that could give them some punch. Superior is done- no team this year.

I think Stillwater, WBL, Roseville, & Highland Central will be the cream of the crop in D2. (I guess I'm not really going out on a limb here since these are probably the largest associations in this district!)

I've heard that Mahtomedi will have both a 12UA and a 12UB team again. Heard the same for Tartan/NSP (TNT) - apparently they are co-oping again at 12U after a two-year absence.

I watched Elk River scrimmage Maple Groves u12A team top 20 (tryouts). Elk River sat their top 7 players after a few shifts, and played their bubble kids and "B" players vs Maple Groves top 20 skaters. Maple Grove never sat their top players. Elk River's B Players skated heads up with Maple Groves top players. Its early, but either you have to drop Maple Grove or put Elk River where it belongs, at #1 or #2.

I happened to catch that game as well, and I agree, the Elk River team looked pretty strong. I think you have to put it into perspective though, what we saw was a "tryout" scrimmage, with no refs, and both teams playing bubble players and "B" players who will not play at the "A" level this season.

If the Elk River "B" players were playing head to head with what you are referring to the top 20 Maple Grove "A" players, why does Elk River not field two 12UA teams?

I also watched the last tryout scrimmage (with refs) for Maple Grove last night, when their top 15 girls, put up 6 goals against the Blaine 12UA team. I believe Maple Grove was still cutting a couple of players after that game.

So does Maple Grove move down or Elk River move up...if you ask me it is way to early to tell, and they will both likely be strong teams this season...ask me again in March and I will give you the final answer.
