Section 3AA

Post by playerplayer1 »

My thoughts on how it will turn out:
Eagan
Apple Valley
Woodbury
Cretin
Hastings
Eastridge
Eastview
Park
Rosemount
Sibley

A Woodbury v. Eastridge matchup in the first round would be pretty interesting. Looks like it should happen.

Not sure after tonight's score Woodbury would want to or deserves to be the #3 seed and play Eastridge. They are 2-5 in their last 7. A 4 or 5 seed feels better to me especially if they lose to Hastings this weekend.

Almost rather be the #2 seed if you're AV or Eagan. CDH will likely be the #4 seed, and would seem like the more tougher opponent than Woodbury right now. I don't know if those will be the actual seedings though. Tough to put CDH ahead of Woodbury since they lost to them twice, but I do think they're the better hockey team right now. I still like either AV or Eagan to come out of this section. I would love to see them play a 3rd time in the section final since the first two matchups were both good games.

Agreed. I am really hoping we face eagan somewhere in sections, more than likely it will be in the championship if it happens. They are still sore over last years OT upset. Always fun to watch this rivalry. Last week's game was electric, the fans and the parents were on their feet. Can't even imagine what the atmosphere would be like in sections.

As bad as Johnson is, didn't they beat both Park and Sibley?

Johnson's not so bad! They beat Chaska 7-1 so they would easily beat AHA!
And no I didn't see either of them on their schedule when I just looked at it. They did tie Hastings in the section though.

It wil be interesting with the SEC teams because Hastings is ahead of them all in the Conference standings and they all have wins and losses with each other. Of the SEC woodbury has the best record against the section opponents but is behind Hastings and CDH in conference standings. I could see it playing out the way the conference standings finish with Hastings as a 3...crazy!

Regardless, if Eagan or Apple Valley doesn't win this, it's their own problems.

Johnson's horrible. Let's be honest. In fact Younghans told me they might be folding in the next few years. The youth organization has already combined with Como, they are so bad.

Can thank all the white cowards on the East Side and 'white flight' for the demise of one of most legendary programs in American high school hockey history. :(

They're 4A. Have been for the past few years now.

Okay, I know Younghans was trying to petition to be moved to the "small schools" section for the better part of the last decade and finally got his wish.

The 2001 and 2004 Govies teams - both who should have won their section final but lost in both cases in gut wrenching last-minute defeats - probably should have been in small schools, according to his logic.

Honestly, I don't know how that's legit, since the school has over 1K students, other than the fact that a couple dozen kids (at best) go out for the club every year. That would be the only logical argument for "small school" status, much like a S.St.P team that's been there for some time now.

Remember the #1 seed in this section has not made it to state for at least the last 4-5 years if not more. And there is a lot of good teams capable of the upset again this year.

This section has not been very friendly to the number 1 seed since the realignment a few years back

08: #1 Rosemount is pounded by Woodbury in Section Final 8-2
09: #1 Woodbury is stunned by Apple Valley in Section Semi's 2-0 (en)
10: #1 Eagan also is unable to figure out Apple Valley in the Section Semi's as they lose 3-2 (ot)

08: #1 Rosemount is pounded by Woodbury in Section Final 8-2

That game is one of my best hockey memories (senior year). Rosemount looked so much better in the 1st even though the score was close (or tied...can't remember which, but all I remember thinking was, "well the team had a good year"), but then the Royals just found a couple of extra gears and sent Rosemount back out of hockey relevance. In a weird twist, Woodbury is following their path to the basement.

3AA-related question: Are there any kids from Cottage Grove on the East Ridge varsity team?

I think Woodbury dropping from contention goes back to the school split. If you look at both Woodbury and East Ridge, there would have been a conference contender if they had stayed combined. Not saying they would have won it but would have been right there. Even last year when Woodbury had all the seniors, a couple of younger East Ridge players would have pushed and kept the 3rd line going for Woodbury, especially after Turner was injured for the season. It might have been enough to push Woodbury to state. Besides the 4 pipes they had in the 1st period against AV.

Boundary wise, about 1/3 of East Ridge should be Cottage Grove based on Youth programs. How many made it through tryouts, I do not know.

This year with the school split, Woodbury also lost some kids to the privates again which also helps. Last year was the first year in the hockey program history that all the kids stayed with Woodbury. (And then the public shool splits). With the program being down, the exodus started again. It may take another 3-4 years to build it back.
