Transfer Rules

Post by O CANADA! »

What do the rules say about a varsity player who moves from one school to another? Does he have to play a year at JV or can he play at the Varsity level (assuming he makes Varsity)? We had a player leave a private school because of financial reasons (his dad lost his job) and stepped right into a Varsity spot on our team (deserved) from his previous Varsity team. I'm getting conflicting information from the stands.

If you move to a new school and your parents stay at the same address he or she has to play JV. If you move then they can play, If you and your wife do not live together and are in different towns say EP and Bloomington and your son or daughter moves in with say Dad then he or she can play anywhere they want at varsity, That parent then becomes the main address and MN High School League has NO say in any of it as the player did move away from his or her last address. Same rule apply if you move into your aunt or uncle however you have to give up all rights to your child but they can play varsity. so there are a few ways to move without being forced to play JV. It also is being talked about currently and I am not sure how this will shake out but if you transfer and they have no JV team then what happens so That has yet to be decided as some schools only have Varsity programs in hockey right now.

Financial hardship, moving from private to public, has some allowances but they do review the families financial situation specifically.

You can't move in with the aunt and uncle. Rules specifically state that you can't change guardianship for the purpose of establishing residency. If parents are divorced you have to have joint custody and the move can occur only once between 9-12 grade to be eligible for varsity (and the new address has to be in the district you want to play in).
