As you increase the number of rankers, I beleive you should get teams ranked all the way up to 20 or 25. Also, I beleive that you should include B rankings for the 14U, 12U, and 10U teams as well. Good Luck!

Can't speak to Squirts or girls, but Bantam A and Pee-wee A look close enough for government work...

Tony Scott,

Heard you have rankers submit ranking each week, then what do you do with the ranking information to come up with the published ranking? Just curious.

Skillz11: It is our goal to have 9 really solid rankings for each division. As our site grows, so too will the demand for B teams at the girl levels. For us it is a numbers game....the greatest participation by far is at the Squirt and PeeWee B levels...the same can't be said for the girls. That being said, we expect to add B level ranking for the girls next year.

I have been a ranker for several years and have found that ranking past 10 at any level feels almost like flipping a coin...ultimately we want to make it as easy as possible for our rankers to rank and be as certain of their rankings as possible.

The Jet: No relation...for as much as I've heard that, I still have no good comeback.

MnHockeys: Yes, we have a really easy online ranking system for our rankers. Our formula for selecting the top teams is a combination of the rankings submitted, wins vs. Top Ten teams, and losses to teams outside Top Ten combined with a mathematical formula that gives credit for where you were ranked the previous week/s. Because we are so new, we are constantly tweaking the formula to make sure we get it exactly right. We got drilled a couple weeks ago for omitting WBL at the Bantam A level...we took note of how this happened and made sure that it was fixed for moving forward.

To do this right, we are monitoring 15 or so team in 9 skill levels across the state...it's a lot work, but for how well the site has been received, it's been worth it.

Sidebar: We have one ranker who ranked his team #1 and then went in and ranked 9 other teams from way outside the top 20 to his ballot to skew his team to look better.

To all readers of this site. I encourage you to become a ranker...it is easy and it really helps establish the true top teams in the state, see link below. Also, if there is something you think we are missing..let me know.

Best Regards,

TS

PeeWee - A
1. Lakeville South
2. Prior Lake
3. Eden Prairie
4. Elk River
5. Hermantown
6. Osseo/Maple Grove
7. Stillwater
8. Edina
9. Minnetonka
10. Bloomington Jefferson

I like the rankings with the exception of Bloomington Jefferson. They will not be in the top ten for long.

Question: Which top teams has Hermantown played to be considered a top ten team?

Will Hermantown be playing in any local tournaments? I know Hermantown will be playing in the Roseau tournament.

Why don't we see any of the top northern teams in the EP or Edina tournaments?

Hermantown PWA

Post by jackdaw »

Our team has played four of the top 10 teams and Hermantown is probably the best all-around team of any of them.

1. Lakeville South
2. Prior Lake
3. Eden Prairie
4. Elk River
5. Hermantown
6. Osseo/Maple Grove
7. Stillwater
8. Edina
9. Minnetonka
10. Bloomington Jefferson

I like the rankings with the exception of Bloomington Jefferson. They will not be in the top ten for long.

Irish: Jefferson and Hermantown are two outliers for sure. I agree that Jefferson will not be there based on the schedule they keep and the talent that they have. I see teams like Farmington, Highland, STMA, Blaine, Eastview, Centennial sneaking in to the top 10.

Hermantown has zero top ten wins, but that factor is currently very small in our formula...as the number of rankers grows the better the rankings become. Northern rankers are very hard to come by so far. Hermantown is playing in Bemidji over New Years and as you mentioned Roseau. No trips to the cities planned as of yet? As I type this...I'm thinking that an interview of their coach might be in order. "Mystery Alaska part 2: Hermantown PWA". Note: I have 1 Jefferson ranker of the possible 3, so I'm certain that that portion of our formula is not flawed.

Top Northern Teams: It's anybody's guess...maybe I'll get their coach on the line and find out...stay tuned.

Thanks for your questions, Irish. Hopefully these answers helped.

Like I said in an earlier post, choosing teams 11-15 is difficult.

Just checked, Blaine plays top ten Elk River twice (per their schedule), after that they will not see another Top Ten team until playoffs....that means their record and eventual ranking could be better than a Jefferson, Minnetonka, or Edina (8-12 type teams) who play a much tougher district schedule.

Strength of Schedule (SOS) is something we are experimenting with mathematically this season...but it won't be fixed until next season. Our rankings are 1 part math, 1 part reader participation, 1 part good win/bad win. The formula models Pairwise of NCAA Hockey and NCAA basketball.

I'm not happy about it that those teams (who I feel aren't top 10 are going to make it, but for the sake of getting it down pat, it will happen this year).

I applaud teams like Highland Central for going out of district to play teams like Edina, Jefferson, and Lakeville South in December versus other teams that don't. In the long run that strategy will pay off.

Thanks. It will be interesting to see where some of these teams end up in the end. Prior Lake is the best right now. PL needs to keep in mind that this season is a marathon not a sprint. So far PL has won the first leg of the race. Too many close games for PL to crown them the best of the best long term. Time will tell. I like everything about PL.
I'm excited to watch Hermantown in Roseau. No doubt this will be their test to see if they belong with the best. I wish them luck.

As for Jefferson. They have a good team, just not a top ten team. You will find over the course of the season they will drop out of the top ten. No disrespect to their program. I didn't see Jefferson play in the EP tournament, so I'm hoping they play in the Edina tournament, or Roseau.

Nothing wrong having Jefferson there, they beat Centennial 3-0 in a ship game in Hopkins, and if I recall Centennial has been competitive with some of the other teams listed here. List will change weekly as does every ranking in any sport. It's not the end of the world as some would make it seem when a team is listed you don't feel should be. Do you assault Let's Play Hockey with bantor when they come out with their rankings and you disagree? It is what is is. Fun to watch and helps guage a few things, but nobody is contending it is the Bible. Love the site Mr. Scott, some great articles/interviews as well that many are missing.

Nothing wrong with Jefferson at all. Currently they're # 10. I predict you will soon see them drop out of the top ten. No big deal. It is what it is.

It would help if Jefferson plans to play in either Edina or Roseau tournaments. See how they do with the top teams? Our team is one of the bottom feeders in D6 hockey and we shoulda, coulda, woulda beat Jefferson with their top goalie playing. Not a Jefferson hater. They're just not a top ten team. I'm a Bloomingtonian and grew up watching Jefferson teams destroy everyone in their path. Good old days!

Jefferson will play 4 of the top 10 teams at least 2 times each due to the realignment of D6 while the woulda shoulda teams will only play the top D6 teams once.

The next 5 (Farmington, Highland, STMA, Centennial, and WBL) will move up with wins over teams in Top 10....no matter the score (wins are what count, not margin of win, or SOG).

Realistically, the more good teams a team plays in the 8-15, the better. Wins vs. teams below count for very little to rankings.

Rankings are just that..a measure of the here and now.

Jefferson for example is highly unlikely to play it's way out of D6...so a season ending Top 10 is unlikely, whereas a team from outside of some the Metro strongholds with an easier road to State might sneak into the final poll.

This week's rankings are just that, this week.

Irish: you're a great (informed) poster...I enjoy reading your posts...thanks.

Best wishes to Jefferson. It is very unlikely they will beat Prior Lake, EP, Or Edina.

Thus far..............

Jefferson Tied a very weak Shakopee team 2-2
Jefferson lost to a ok Waconia team 4-1
Jefferson lost to a good Edina team 5-1
Jefferson lost to a good Prior Lake team 8-2
Jefferson beat a weak Chaska/Chanhassen team 3-2

Jefferson will be 0-6 against the big three. Waconia will be an interesting team along the way. They get a huge advantage and get to play the cupcakes in D6 twice. In the end. Waconia will have to play the big three and they won't even come close to beating those teams.

Good luck to all............................
