BY THE NUMBERS 12/9/2011
Minnesota High School Hockey’s version of “By The Numbers”. In case you do not already know what it is, it’s pretty much just a list of numbers that present some fun fact (usually statistical). The list has all games since the beginning of the season to December 8 put into consideration. I also want to mention that I try to keep all material positive. I’m not going to post a statistic for example with goaltender “X” having a GAA of 20 as this statistic is clearly something that could be an object of ridicule, and I really don’t mean to offend or insult anyone indirectly and or purposely. I'm really just aiming it to be a fun read for everyone. Also all these stats were recorded on and copied from the various MN High School hockey websites, and I understand that some of their statistics are not always completely right, and I’m sorry for any inaccuracy in advance. Enjoy!
.976 - On December 8 junior goaltender Chris Mallon for Burnsville record 41 saves of 42 shots resulting in a .976 save percentage in the upset victory over the Red Knights of Belinde St. Margarets (5-1). The save percentage of .976 is the best (not including shutouts) in a game with 30 or more shots just barely edging out Tartan senior Evan Hauser's performance against Mounds View, where he recorded a .975 save percentage (39 of 40).
7-7-7-18 - The night of December 1 saw the Christmas lights light up as there was a total of three, seven point scorers including the likes of seniors Josh Cisar of Moose Lake (5 goals, 2 assists) and Jesse Scalon of Proctor (2 goals, 5 assists) along with freshmen Shane Gersich of Holy Family Catholic (3 goals, 4 assists). December 1 also included a grand total of 18 hat tricks around the state, which totals up to 54 goals.
197 - In only four games Mankato East’s Lucas Weihe has saved a state leading 197 shots. The senior goaltender is averaging 49 saves a game, while still managing a save percentage of .929, which ranks seventh in the state for SV% among goalies with four or more games played.
87 - On December 6, Two Harbors went to Ely Ice Arena to face the Ely Timberwolves. In the second period, the two teams scored a flurry of goals against one another. In a mere 87 seconds (11:27-12:54) five goals were scored, two goals for Ely and three goals for Two Harbors. Ely went on to win the shootout 11-6.
40 - Sartell-St. Stephen senior goaltender Taylor Shaw recorded a miraculous 40 save shutout against Central Lakes Conference foe Sauk Rapids-Rice on December 8. The Sabres went on to win the game (4-0). Shaw’s 40 save shutout is the most saves in a shutout effort so far this season.
38 - In the opening 38 seconds of a game between St. Michael-Albertville and Robbinsdale Cooper on December 1, STMA senior Thomas Juntunen scored. Juntunen’s 38 second goal is the fastest goal to open a game so far this season. STMA went on to win the game 10-0.
16:59 - Northwest Conference opponents Red Lake Falls and Bagley/Fosston were in a defensive battle Tuesday, December 6, but with 8:13 remaining in the game, Red Lake Falls’ sophomore Ryan Amiot tied the game 1-1. Then 16:59 minutes into the third period with only 1 second left, Jacob Ness of Red Lake Falls scored to win the game for the Eagles with a final score of 2-1.
1 - St. Francis Saints senior, Trevor Squire is the lone senior on the team. The Saints of St. Francis are the only team in the MN High School League with one senior on the hockey team. No teams have zero seniors. Other teams with a small number of seniors includes (with a total of 2 seniors) Edina, St. Paul Academy/MPA, Waconia and Worthington/RLB.
1261 - This year in the Big 9 Conference Scott Lecy of Rochester John Marshall, Bruce Frutiger of Rochester Century and Will Fish of Owatonna have left their respective heading coaching positions, but something that has been a constant for in the Big 9 are coaches Roy Nystrom for Albert Lea and Lorne Grosso for Rochester Mayo. Together the two coaches combine for an amazing 1261 wins. As of December 9, Nystrom has 635 wins and Grosso has 626.
62- As of December 8, 2011 a total of 62 shorthanded goals have been scored by teams’ penalty killers. Of those 62 shorthanded goals scored this season, 20 of them have been scored this week from December 5 to December 8.
