Who cares

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

I have gone to the tourney for five or six years
Now and everyday I was at the red line at one of the rinks.
This year I am boycotting a terrible tourney. Each year for the last two or three years now they have had to fill the brackets with teams from out of state teams. It started with two A and AA. Now there are like the Rochester teams and two other Minnesota teams. The rest are teams that I have no interest in watching and will not pay to see. When they can fill the brackets with at least 12 teams from Minnesota again then I will think about coming back. Till then I will drive to the Schwann cup of st Louis park and watch quality Minnesota hockey.

GMHfan...this tourney has seen better teams and better attendance...but you need to remind yourself that these are kids playoing a game they love to play and for someone like you to get on here and bash the tournament is ir-responsible and uncalled for. Go to your Schwanns tourney and have fun....nobody in Rochester will miss you.....at all.

I know nothing about the tournament, but it does seem weird to have a AA and A bracket with so few MN teams in the tournament.

Does anyone know much about any of the out of state teams? If the out of state teams aren't too great, I'd put money on a Rochester team winning both. We'll see...

Exactly my point

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

Why can't they have more minnesota teams. I don't know much about the othere out of state teams nor do I care about the out of state teams. I want to see Minnesota kids play hockey. My goal during the year is to see quality minnesota hockey.

Eau Claire Memorial is a good team, usually a top 10 team in Wisconsin. New Richmond and Fargo South have been hit or miss over the years, but competitive most years, those last 2 have been mainstays with the 3 Rochester public schools over the last decade or so. Eastview seems to be pretty good this year, Mayo is doing well, and NR is doing alright.

The class A tourney is very weak this year, maybe Verona is decent, I see they're a top 10 Wisconsin team as of last week. If you beat Lourdes you don't come back has been a recent theme, Mason City and Memorial 2 of the last 3 years which is a shame.

I have noticed that teams who commute rather than stay in Rochester seem to disappear as well.

I go, the money goes to a good cause and I'll also stop to see the Rotary basketball tournament as well. I won't support the Clash wrestling however.

My guess is that they are asking teams and not able to find 12 teams from outside the city to come play. My guess is that you (not you personally) should not be blaming them but rather, if anyone, the teams who are not returning.

If true, this is unfortunate.

The problem

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

No I am not going to blame teams for not returning. A team should try to find tourneys with quality teams to play. And if the Kiwanis cannot provide that why wouldn't they go to a different tourney to play in. Seems to me that teams from the north like Duluth Denfeld, int falls, brainerd, come down and do really well and decide to find a better quality tourney to go to. I still contend the tourney needs a major increase in Minnesota teams. I am not going to waste my time watching teams from another state. My goal during the year is to see as many quality Minnesota teams as possible.

My pick

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

My pick for the AA tourney is Rochester mayo. By far they have the
Best chance for a championship appearance in the AA game by a Rochester
Team. Go Spartans. We all know Lourdes will win A tourney. And anyone who knocks them out will not be invited back.

Agreed, class A is very weak. It's dissapointing that so many teams have to come from other states just to fill the tournament.

I don't believe that teams aren't invited back if they beat Lourdes though. That's your personal opinion. Lourdes has wanted better competition, unlike what you're stating here and that's why they're leaving the Kiwanis tournament next year to play in the Scwanns Cup! They told the Kiwanis to bring in better teams and it hasn't happened for over 5 years now. Now, the A division will not have a Rochester team in it. The Kiwanis tournament is ran by a bunch of guys who have never played hockey, don't know hockey well and can't talk coaches into bringing their team down to Rochester when everything is paid for.

Lourdes will be playing in the Silver Division.

Also, a local team wouldn't leave the Rochester Kiwanis Tournament if they felt the competition level was where it needed to be. The Kiwanis tournament is free for all teams in it. Why would a coach take their team to the Schwann's Cup where you have to pay money to be a part of it if they could get good competition for FREE at HOME.

The teams that didn't return probably have a good reason. Maybe they wanted to play in a better tournament as well! Cough Cough.

I like the idea of the A-bracket winner playing the AA-bracket winner. This would add an extra game to the tournament but would give bragging rights to the winner.

It would be especially nice if it were Rochester Lourdes vs. Mayo / Century or JM as everyone would like to see the outcome of this. It would sell a lot of tickets and make for some good chatting.

Well, maybe not everyone.

So much for that the whole no competition thing.

Northland Pines 4 Lourdes 2 Final meaning Mayo is the only Rochester team to win on Day 1.

Lourdes leaving

Post by grandmeadowhockeyfan »

I think this move is about two years late. The previous two years
I would say good for Lourdes and they should be able to play with
That level. Right now I am not so sure. It seems to me the team is
On its way back to the median. They lost two big scorers and the defense
Is not quite as good either. With the team heading back to the median they will go to the silver division and not do as well as they would have two years ago. My prediction is that they will go up to the silver division for a few years and do poorly. After having a few disappointments the team will decide to come back to the Kiwanis tourney with there tail between their knees.
