Who was right ? Coaches or KRACH

Post by Marty »

I guess it maybe too early for a full answer, but

In the sections where seeds were flipped (lower KRACH point teams seeded higher). Who was right the coaches or KRACH ?

I agree that it's still a bit early to conclude which proves to be the more accurate, and it will vary by section, but it will be interesting to compare the two when sections have been completed.

To make the comparison easier here is the seeding for each section. The first number is where KRACH had the team seeded; the second number is where the coaches seeded them.

KRACH-Coaches Seed

1AA
1-1 Lakeville North
2-2 Lakeville South
3-3 Dodge County
4-5 Rochester JM/Lourdes
5-4 Owatonna
6-6 Rochester Century
7-7 Farmington
8-8 Winona
9-9 Rochester Mayo

Result: All the same except Nos. 4 and 5 teams flipped

2AA
1-1 Eden Prairie
2-2 Edina
3-3 Bloomington Jefferson
4-4 Chaska/Chanhassen
5-6 Holy Family/Waconia
6-5 Shakopee
7-7 Prior Lake
8-8 Bloomington Kennedy

Result: All the same except Nos. 5 and 6 teams flipped

3AA
1-1 Eagan
2-2 Apple Valley
3-3 Burnsville
4-4 Hastings
5-5 East Ridge
6-6 Eastview
7-7 Park
8-8 Rosemount
9-9 Woodbury

Result: Same

4AA
1-1 Hill-Murray
2-2 Roseville
3-4 Cretin-Derham Hall
4-3 Stillwater
5-7 White Bear Lake
6-5 North St. Paul
7-6 Tartan
8-8 Minneapolis
9-9 St. Paul Blades

Result: CDH and Stillwater flipped as Nos. 3 and 4 seeds. KRACH had WBL two spots (at #5) above the coaches (#7). KRACH had North and Tartan (#6 and #7 respectively) ranked one spot below the coaches (#5 and #6 respectively).

5AA
1-1 Mounds View
2-2 Andover
3-3 Blaine
4-4 Anoka
5-5 Champlin Park
6-6 Irondale
7-7 Centennial
8-8 Coon Rapids
9-9 Spring Lake Park

Result: Same

6AA
1-2 Benilde-St. Margaret's
2-1 Minnetonka
3-4 Buffalo
4-3 Hopkins
5-5 Wayzata
6-6 Armstrong/Cooper
7-7 Maple Grove
8-8 North Metro

Result: BSM and Tonka are flipped at Nos. 1 and 2, and Buffalo and Hopkins are flipped at Nos. 3 and 4.

7AA
1-2 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton
2-1 Forest Lake
3-3 Elk River/Zimmerman
4-4 Grand Rapids/Greenway
5-5 Duluth
6-6 Cambridge-Isanti
7-7 St. Francis

Result: Same except C/E/C and Forest Lake are flipped at Nos. 1 and 2.

3-4 Bemidji
4-3 Sartell/Sauk Rapids
5-5 St. Cloud

Remidji and Sartell/SR are flipped at Nos. 3 and 4; Moorhead and River Lakes are flipped at Nos. 6 and 7.

I think someone could do a mini-study on this from previous years, perhaps the past 2 or 3 seasons, and see if the coaches or KRACH were better predictors of success. Perhaps some simple difference analysis, but with some of the SOS and section realignment mdoels that I've seen here recently, I'm sure some of you could come up with something more sophisticated. But it would be interesting to see the results. I think one major determinant is that coaches might give more weight to which teams are playing better recently while KRACH is agnostic to that. There are a myriad other competing factors, of course, but would that be enough to tip the scales in favor of the coaches?
